    Thanks for your video, it certainly looked cold. I too suffer from cold hands and as I'm sure you know, in winter France can be a cold place. I ride with straight handlebars and can manage braking and gears wearing ski gloves. My hands still get cold and 30 miles in winter is my max. I remember turning 70, seems a long time ago and I'm now into my 80th year.

    Hi Roy,
    Firstly, happy birthday Roy, I hope you had a great day,
    Secondly, thankyou for all the videos this year. Its nice to watch a genuine, normal person with videos showing wonderful scenery, history and friendly cyclists with no hidden agenda to push their opinions or sell us things.
    Thirdly, GoPro replaced my Hero7 with a new Hero9 earlier in the year as it got water damage and as I needed to get new spare batteries for it, I got the new white Enduro ones. I have to say I'm impressed with thier performance over the blue standard one that came with it in both hot and cold conditions. I might not have been in as cold conditions as you have been but if you don't use them yet, it might be worth giving them a go to see if they are better.
    Many thanks for the time and effort you put in to make these videos for us and have a good new year and 2023.
    James

      @RideWithRoy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, James, but you probably overdid it with ‘normal’ 😀 My replacement came today, which was a new Hero 9. I couldn’t expect an upgrade as it was out of warranty and I don’t subscribe to their damage replacement scheme. I am about to place an order for the Enduro batteries, mainly as it’s not easy changing batteries with the media mod fitted, so the additional endurance will help, and your comments have reassured me it’s a good purchase. I leave for France late on New Year’s Eve, so can now take the camera and make an episode or two while there for the week 🥖🇫🇷

    The clip about 15 mins in with the close pass by a driving instructor (highly doubt a learner would have the bottle to drive like that) is really annoying, what is supposedly a professional driver who is responsible for training future drivers being that irresponsible really is disconcerting.

      That happened on the coast to coast ride and it was reported to Lancashire police. They responded that it fell well below acceptable standards and would be pursuing. I don’t have any feedback on the penalty but I suspect it would be greater than a driving course.

And have tried a lots of gloves over that time. But if it’s just an Cold day and not wet. Then I would recommend a Pure Wool Knitted Glove with a Thinsulate Lining. These allow the Hands to Breathe without your hands getting wet inside the glove. Not sure of the price, but should be under £10 .Thanks again and good luck for 23. Phil B

      Thanks, Phil. I’ll try that idea - you can’t beat natural fibres. I do wear ‘woolen’ gloves inside my Lobster claws, but I doubt these have ever been near a sheep, so that’s likely the problem. Like saddles, gloves are a subjective subject. I’ve tried gloves that other rave about only to find they don’t work for me.

    Hi Roy. Thanks for your interesting & informative video’s this year. My (nearly) 70 year old ears picked up when you mentioned winter gloves. I suffer terribly with cold fingers & in spite of trying silk inner gloves, Lobster Claw and a variety of ‘Recomended’ cold weather gloves, have failed to find anything that does the job. Even the little heat pads don’t really cut it as I can’t get them into the right place. I wonder if you have ever considered trying the battery powered ‘Heated Gloves’? I also wonder if you could review such handwear as you obviously have some respect from manufacturers and your reviews always give a sensible critique? Anyway, keep up the good work and I hope you have a wonderful 70th year with lots of cycling adventures. Best Wishes for 2023.

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Simon. On one long winter ride I did use heat pads to great effect. I placed them between an inner and outer glove on the back of my hand, the theory being that they would heat the blood passing through those veins. They become quite expensive to use on every ride though, so I have considered the electrically heated ones. I shall have to see if a manufacturer is interested in sending some over to try. I did have some for flying, where cold at altitude in winter is even worse, but they were powered from the plane. As they say, watch this space 😀

    Because of you Roy I recently got my Ribble CGR ALE, Bar extender although I may need to fit my Cat Eye front light upside down due to the fitting. Had my first short ride yesterday walking like John Wayne today. I found the Garmin power assist a good buy as you can go up and down. Roy, hope you had a wonderful birthday 🎂.
    I enjoyed this video. I actually love the fog but have to admit I've never ridden in the fog.
    Question: when you're riding on roads with traffic, about how fast are the cars going? I ride on residential streets with a speed limit of 25 mph. Unfortunately, this practice really limits where I can go. It would be nice to be able to actually go somewhere rather than just riding around in circles. But the streets I would have to ride have speed limits of 45 mph which scares me because I ride so slowly (compared to those who ride two wheels).
    Wishing you and your family, and Wendy and her family a great New Year. 🎆🎉

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Our max speed limit is 70 mph on dual carriageways (which I would never ride on) and 60 on all other roads, unless signed less. As you can imagine, 60 is fast for those narrow lanes. I would imagine you would be safer on your trike due to it being more noticeable, but you have to do what you are comfortable with. Isn’t it sad that the actions of others cause us to miss out on the things we enjoy doing.

    Congratulations on reaching 70 years old Roy! Especially after flying near lightning storms.
    I enjoy seeing your videos from over her in America.
    Sorry you had problems with your GoPro 9. I've heard other people complain about the newer models. I haven't upgraded since I got my GoPro 8 Black in 2020. The rubber parts over the buttons on my GoPro 8 got worn out on it and enough that when it drizzled rain just a little on it, I thought it was toast. I couldn't get it to work but, I kept trying and I almost tried to open it but, after watching videos of how to open them and trying, I decided not to. I just sprayed some DeOxit in and left the battery out and the door opened and somehow after a couple of weeks it came back to life. I put a rubber case Lanyard on the GoPro 8 Black and it feel like new when I use it now and the rubber casing keeps the inside of the camera dry when I get caught in the rain. I got lucky to get the GoPro 8 to work again.
    I bought my Triban RC 520 bike after watching your videos and some other people's Triban Videos. I paid $1299 two Februarys ago. A month later it went up to $1399. Recently I saw it at $1699. Today, I looked at the price and it dropped down to $999. That surprised me. I had seen the only Decathlon stores we had in the United States that were in California had closed shortly after I bought mine from there. I don't know if that $999 price is because they are trying to clear out the place but, that's a really good bargain now.
    I've put 6,800 miles on my bike. I kept everything original. I wished I had bought one size bigger because the Medium feels a little small for me. My Rear original tire nearly got 4,000 miles out of it before the wear all of sudden started to show on it. I replaced the rear tire with a Continental Grand Prix 5000 and it's been a good tire. I am still using my original front tire and I am surpised it still looks good. It may outlast my rear Grand Prix 5000 tire. I really just wanted to see how many miles I would get out of my front tire. I had bought two new Grand Prix 5000 tires but, thought the front original tire would have worn soon after.
    I didn't need a tire lever to break the rear tire off when I changed it. I thought I read that Decathlon had improved that issue. It took some work get it off by hand. I just going around it and pinching it until it brook the hold that the hook had on it and the rest of it just came right off.
    The Triban RC 520 has been a good bike for what I paid for it. I'd recommend for people to buy it at $999 but, not $1,699.

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, I am still surprised I’ve lasted this long 😀 It seems the GoPro 8 was the last of the reliable ones. Even though my 9 was replaced, it’s still glitchy. For example, if I leave a battery installed it switches itself on and discharges overnight. Great to hear you get on so well with the Triban. That reduced price is amazing! I just checked here and it’s about the same as usual, but they have many other bikes reduced. The cycle industry is struggling here, so maybe they are trying to offload some stock. I occasionally ride with someone that bought a Triban on my recommendation. He confirmed your theory about the wheel design change as he has no problem with tight tyres. Great to hear from you and thanks for taking the time.

    • @Phonamana
      @Phonamana ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RideWithRoy about the camera turning on, I had that glitch on the GoPro 8. It was weird that mine turned on like that. That seemed to happen after it got wet. Maybe it's moisture related. I took an air can and aired it out. My button may have gotten some moisture in it too. That issue was only a temporary issue for me.
      I did Google Search for answers for you. Some people mentioned the bluetooth setting may cause it. That's an easy setting to check to see if it's on or off.
      The big one that people say that helped fix their GoPro turning on by itself issue was they did a manual update after downloading the firmware update to a micro sd card and then they loaded the micro sd card into their GoPro and did the firmware update that way. Some mentioned to do a factory reset and then do the "manual firmware update". I will suggest to give that a try and see if it helps.
      Someone always mentioned to adjust the wake mode but, I know nothing about wake mode. Maybe on voice command it can turn on. I do kind of remember GoPro adding a scheduling feature on their GoPro camera to turn on at certain times. It could be a related bug. Probably all that can get fixed with a Factory reset and a manual update.
      The Sweetest Cyclist on TH-cam, replied back to me about the price drop. I also told him about it because he was the other TH-camr that helped influence me to buy a Triban RC 520. He lives in the States too. He thinks maybe they are clearing out the Triban RC 520s to make room for a new inventory.
      I know I bought my bike at the California store and they closed the only two Decathlon stores in America down. Their website is still selling products so, I don't know what the whole story is with that. Canada had quite a few Decathlon stores the last time I checked.
      Walmart and C Curated were both stores that I saw that had sold the Triban RC 520 for less than what Decathlon sold it for but, now I don't even see that those two stores are even selling the Triban RC 520 bike anymore. I don't know what's going on.
      Happy Riding! Thanks for the sharing the vids you make!

      That’s really kind of you to go to so much trouble. I also think it may be related to the voice command, as when I keep that turned off it doesn’t seem to happen. So perhaps it picks up my snoring in the night 😀 I’ll try the other suggestions you researched as well. Thanks again!

    Roy, I bought my RC520 after watching your glowing reviews. I did have to wait for almost a year for them to arrive in stock in Canada, but I think it was well worth the wait.
    I do have a question I have been meaning to ask you, what was the largest tire that you fit on yours? I am currently running Panaracer Gravel King SS 32's but am considering going larger to a 38 if it will fit. I know Decathlon says 36mm is the max., but I've heard that people have gone larger.
    All the best and I look forward to your upcoming adventures.

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      38mm will fit with no problem, Mike. I’ve heard people say even a 40mm will work (see this article thesweetcyclists.com/widest-tire-decathlon-triban-rc-520/). Personally, I ran 36mm and they performed well on road and trail. It’s a great bike and you’ll have many years of use out of it. I eventually upgraded the wheels as puncture repairs were a nightmare on the OE set. If I was buying the bike again I would have taken advantage of the tubeless ready wheels. I also upgraded to the Shimano 105 11/34 cassette, to aid climbing.

    Hi Roy. I'm just catching this vid in Sept '23. I bought the RC520 GRVL partially because of your high praise (plenty of other research too) . And I'm somewhat disappointed by 1) my toe can touch the front tire if it is turned sharply. I know this is rare during regular riding but not so at very slow speeds. I find this very dangerous. And 2), walking out of Decathlon in Lorient France, they told me the only mud guards that would work were a particular brand that came from Germany and could be bought on Amazon. I got the rear one on but gave up on the front due to the foot clearance problem which was exacerbated. I'm thinking of returning it but, as you say, anything comparable would be much more expensive (paid 1200 euros in June).
    Didn't you encounter these problems? Thanks for the interesting content. Cheers. B. Stowe

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, Bill. Sounds like the frame is too small for you. I had this happen when another frame I rode was too small. And, as you say, the mudguards will be hit every time. I never had this problem with my Triban. Check their sizing guide to see what the correct frame is for you. Either way, I think you’ll have to return it as it’s no good and unsafe as it is

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Purely that I didn’t have space to keep all three gravel bikes an MTB and road bike, Victor. I wanted to keep the Ribble e assist and the Tempest, so the Triban was the one that had to go. I’m pleased that it’s gone to a great new owner who will love it.

    Thanks for your thoughtful explanations on the Triban. Really helped a newbie like me realise that it's ok to save some money and get it. Think I'll go for that one. But was also thinking if it's better to get something second hand that's similarly versatile for someone still working out what their Cycling hobby will look like!?

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I’m delighted it helped 🙂 If you’re not sure it would be a good plan to buy a used bike. I would strongly suggest taking advice before a purchase, from someone with some knowledge, as there are some bargains and also some that will cost you a lot in repairs. The Triban is a lot of bike for the money and will do almost everything you want it to. The only exception is if you decide to go ultralight carbon and get into fast riding. We do have a really nice subscribers’ Facebook group that you are welcome to join. They are likeminded cyclists who will gladly share their wisdom facebook.com/groups/723507535708096/?ref=share_group_link

      @@RideWithRoy I didn't see this reply until now. Actually in the end did another month or so of research and chatting to people in the know to work out what I wanted. And got a 2017 ALR5 Emonda for 350£ on eBay near mint condition. Deals are out there to had if you do the work to figure what you want, and it's not the wild west that people scare you into thinking, most people are decent normal people shifting a bike they don't use anymore. I ended up saving 500£ vs the Triban and also 2kg in weight.
      Like anything there's the 1st and the 2nd hand market, it's in the former where you'll overpay especially in the current market and need to be wealthy for it to make sense.

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @nb9797

      @@RideWithRoy it was a bargain indeed. I've seen Tarmac with Hunt wheels go for 500£, Supersix Evo 2018 go for the same. Both excellent condition. And that's just me looking for black bikes 😂 many many more deals to be had if your not as vain. You'll know. I'm just putting it here for anyone else reading. Essentially go rim brake... Lighter cheaper easier to maintain. Once you want disc brakes your not being any bargains

    Are you looking for a quiet route from Newark to Southwell? I know of one, though it’s not very direct, it is all on quiet roads.
    Head out of Newark past the Sugar Beet factory (on the cyclepath). When you get to South Muskham, head for Bathley, go through Bathley, then take a left at the crossroads, climb over the hill (a steady climb, not steep) and drop down to Caunton. Take a left in Caunton village, follow the road and you will come to a crossroads with the A616. Go straight across - follow the road past Newfield Ice Cream Parlour, which has a nice cafe if needed, carry on to Hockerton. Staggered crossroads over the A617 (left then right). This road brings you in the back way to Southwell, either past the Workhouse or past the Old Water Mill.
    I also don’t like that crossing over the A52. We tend to cross at Muston, as it’s a pain opening and shutting the gates, but it’s still a fast and dangerous crossing. A footbridge over the A52 would be great.

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Trevor. The footbridge will be at the Muston pedestrian crossing. That is the route we take to Southall, but it’s the main road leaving the town that takes us past the university before we turn off to Hoveringham that we dislike.

    • @Trevor.Adams640
      @Trevor.Adams640 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah, we always head South-east out of Southwell, go past the Garden Centre, past Brinkley and down to either Fiskerton or Morton, then via Bleasby to Thurgaton. Much quieter that way. From Thurgaton we go back down to the river at Hoveringham, then back to Lowdham. I agree the Southwell-Lowdham road is busy with lots of bends and hills, and we never ride on it for that reason. The route via Bleasby is a little bit further, not much, but worth it for the quieter roads.
