    Hiya. I am so relieved to see that you dont pre-wash jersey. I never used to but after reading it might shrink I started to. But as you said, it makes it so unruly to work with so I feel confident about no pre-wash now. Thanks! Would you say the same for sweatshirting? I imagine anything with elastane in it won't shrink much anyway? Great to see you back too.

    You look fabulous! Something is going well for you, clearly. I, also, love Kai scissors. I bought 6” Kai’s just for little clips, trimming and easing corners. Worth the price, which was after all only about as much as a couple of yards of good fabric. My thoughts on pre-washing if I may? 3 methods I use are: 1. cut 2 5” squares of fabric and wash only one so you can compare them afterwards. It won’t detect minor shrinking, but will detect major shrinking. 2. Fold the fabric into size that fits into a sink and wash it in the sink. This is perfect for loosely knitted fabric that must be handled with care, and for long lengths of fabric that may get twisted and stretched even in a front loading machine. I use it for wool or silk knits. It takes time to do well, especially to squeeze out the fabric until it is stable enough unfold and let air dry. I don’t mind when I’ve just spent over $100 for a fine piece of wool or silk knit! 3. Before putting lengths of fabric in the washing machine, I stabilize it by zig zag stitching the two cut edges together. Sometimes I even zig zag the selvedges as well. Use a long stitch and fudge the tension settings so that one or the other of the threads pulls to the top and it will be VERY easy to remove. I’ve picked up these ideas from other great sewers and instructors like you!

    So good to see you back and laughing! 🌻 I wish I knew sooner about not pre-washing knits. They curl and get out of shape when washed…Currently trying to cut a simple t-shirt from a striped knit. I have tried all possible ways, including stretching on the diagonal, so the stripes fall on the same line all around the body. I am thinking of adding a vertical solid strip on the seams… all suggestions are welcome.
    Thank you !

    Thanks for your update Johanna! Been wondering where you have been and good to hear your news and will look forward to your video on coverstitch machines etc. I am seriously wanting to invest in either the Janome 2000 or 3000 not sure which one to go for. As I dont live close to where one is displayed and ready to buy am hoping to order one and hope I can work it all out by watching TH-cam to get tutorials. I love knits and this is many reasons to master the finishing off when you make t'shirts and tops so it looks more professional.

    Oh wow - this is exactly what I've been looking for - how to cut knits. I used a twin needle (ballpoint) as pattern suggested to hem a pair of child's leggings. After much testing and adjusting tension (both top and bottom) and adjusting stitch length etc. I got it done but still with some tunneling. I don't own a serger or coverstitch, and don't know which I would prefer actually. I want to make more knit clothing - especially for a granddaughter (and perhaps myself since seeing your beautiful stripe top and its many variations).

    • @micheletorrusio3477
      @micheletorrusio3477 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are serious about sewing knits, a serger is a fantastic investment. It will become a real work horse. A coverstitch machine is a luxury - very nice but it won't get nearly the use a serger will.

    Please take care of yourself as it sounds like you may be over-extended (with the full-time day job etc.) However, I can fully understand your decision to take a job with a regular pay cheque. Sounds like you made a good decision in light of financial trends in last while. But do look after yourself and make time for things that are healthy and ease stress.
