  • In this video I'll show you how to sew fold over elastic (FOE) as a binding on a knit fabric. You can use this on a variety of fabric types as well. There are several examples of this used in patterns found on Pixie Faire - LJ SLip Dress, LJ Free Swimsuit, LUB Dainty Things and Days of the Week Panties/Cami. You can find FOE at Pixie Faire: www.pixiefaire.com/collection...

I prefer how neat the twin double seam looks on a garment and will be using one in the future.

This video taught me that I could use a double needle on the Fold over Elastic which makes it a very neat looking finished. I have always zigzagged the elastic. Thank you and thumbs up on this video.❤

Excellent video for a person like me who has not used FOE.

I’ve never heard of foldover elastic. So nice you can use it as trim. I’ll share this zigzag stitch info over the elastic with my daughter. Thank you for sharing.

Using Fold over elastic is a new technique for me. It gives such a nice look with the double stitching.

Working with knits and stretch fabric/elastic is a challenge that I have yet to conquer. This video is very helpful.

I make a lot of underwear, and foldover elastic is definitely a skill that needs practice! I like that you show sewing it on in two steps … while you technically can do it in one step, it’s actually harder on these small pieces. I generally do my final stitching with the three step zigzag, which seems to me to be a better stitch than a regular zigzag, but I’m intrigued by the idea of using a twin needle and a straight stitch. On an outer garment, like the slip dress or a swimsuit, I think it might look better.

I will try the Twin Needle technique on my next FOE project - I've not done that before. Thank you for the info!

I’m inspired to try some AG skirts and tees. I’d like to get comfortable sewing with knits.

I’ve never used a double needle with FOE. I like it much better than the zigzag stitch and will try that soon.

I have used fold-over elastic once on some PUL diaper covers and it was really hard for me to work with. I hadn't thought about tacking the fabric inside the elastic before folding it over and binding the edge. I will have to try that next time I'm working with this type of finish.

Thank you for this clear tutorial! Once you've stretched the elastic out on your first pass, do you need to stretch it again when you are attaching the elastic to the right side?

Wondering if this could be sewn in one step as bias binding can be

I have tried this, and, while it seems like you could, I find it’s actually harder on these short runs of elastic and small pieces of fabric. The trick is keeping the sometimes slippery knit fabric snuggly up against that center fold of the elastic, especially when you have to stretch the elastic as you sew, like you do on underpants … I always seemed to end up with a section that was uneven, or even barely caught, in my stitching. FOE got a lot easier when I took a few extra minutes to sew it in two steps!

Sometimes I find that the fold over elastic stretches the material and makes it bigger than I wanted.
