Is the Speed Triple "too much" bike for the street?

  • It's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow. Today I talk about my current feelings towards liter bikes and street riding and how it's changed over the years.
The Triumph Speed Triple 1050 is the flagship streetfighter and big brother to the Street Triple. The Speed triple is an absolute brute in terms of power and weight. It can be a weapon in the twisties and a wheelie machine, but where do those qualities translate to the street? I've been humbled by a few speeding tickets and found that I often reach for the keys on my Grom before the speed triple. Sometimes I feel that the Speed seems like "too much" for a casual ride around the city. Nowadays, riding the speed feels more like an event rather than something casual. Mainly due to the fact that I want to ride the piss out of it, rather than put around. This video was more rambling if anything and i'm sure my thoughts on liter bikes will change again...and again...and again lol. I will plan on having a full review of my Speed Triple in the upcoming months. Thanks for watching!

I went through this exact dilemma a year ago. I had a speed trip abs with akra exhaust and it was addicting as all get out...but the idea of a Grom made all the sense in the world. The Grom is just so easy to get in and out of the garage and just hop on and get anywhere, it’s shortcut city with a Grom. I don’t really know how to explain it but on a Grom it’s like there are 10,000 more paths that magically open up that didn’t exist when you were in your car or on your bigger bike. The Grom was just a tad too slow in the long run so the answer for me was the razkull. With that I was able to put a bigger carb on it and get my 220lbs up in the mid 70’s and that was perfect. The razkull took about 10 minutes to turn into a mini Ducati Monster. Once I got the carb and zoom exhaust on the raz it was plenty fast and popped and banged just like the Triumph. Once that happened there was no longer anything superior about owning the Triumph, nor a need for a 2nd/bigger bike, so it went up for sale immediately and to my surprise I actually didn’t miss it at all. I think you nailed it with the ego thing. Once you get over yourself, you realize that riding a slow bike fast is 5x more fun and 100x more convenient, not to mention soooooo much cheaper to own and easier/more fun to work on.

Carter Garnon Exactly. I actually cut out a portion of this video where I talked about how much more mobile I feel on a grom than a big bike haha. The Grom feels like it has no rules when you ride it! It’s such an innocent fun time that I’m never really worried about the law

We forgot about parking too! There are those spots where you can park your bike where you can't park your car, well there are infinitely more spots where you can park your Grom where you can't park your 600 etc. My favorite use for it was when I'd be working on a project at the house or on a car or something and needed to make that Lowes or Home Depot run for some odd bolt or hose or whatever, I could hop on the raz, be there in a snap and then just park right next to the entrance, right by all of the grills and mowers, hop off run in, hop back on and be home in no time.

I completely understand what you're saying. I live outside of DC, and between the traffic and the ergonomics of my ZX6R, most of the fun of casual riding is gone. My commute to work involves about 30 miles on a major highway so decent power is a must. Which makes deciding on my next bike difficult. I'm between a Speed Triple (my dream bike since forever) or an even more comfortable and versatile (but less powerful compared to the Speed3) bike like the Street Scrambler. I wish I could just get both haha. Good luck on choosing your next ride, but please keep that beautiful Speed3 in videos.

Good review mate as I have a speedtriple myself and I know where your coming from. However it’s all about throttle control as this bike can bring out the Satan in you. I have ridden all the the top sports bikes in the uk and trust me nothing puts a smile on your face like a speedtriple, Iam a 56 grandfather who went through the same conundrum but just ease off the throttle a bit and yourll be fine

Is that something you did or do you just have a different version of the tank? I saw your other vid and wanted to do a similar radiator hose wrap/cover/sleeve. Do you have more info on them? Such great bikes. Thanks!

Damn just saw this been to Idaho Boise a bunch of times and it looks fun to ride there thought of it. I have a 09 speed 3 hitting 40k and it’s a fun bike to ride in the city, backroads, and canyons, haven’t heard of any complains in the rurals area just in the cities I ride in Washington and Oregon lots of routes to choose from and ride. I love how torquey it is don’t have to drop a gear in traffic unless you riding with the big boys and ripping through traffic.

Quick answer is no. I have one and I think it has almost the perfect amount of power for the street. I had a CBR 1000rr before this that was tuned and had a full exhaust and that thing might of been too fast for the street but it sure was fun.

Good vid man. I definitely feel you man. Sometimes I wonder the same thing. I had a Speedy R and it was amazing. Then I got a T120 Black and loved it. I'll be back in the market for a bike in the next 3-6 months, but I cannot decide if I should go Speed or Street Triple, partially due to your exact mindset here, and also partially because the Street Triple is a little shorter (I'm 5'8''). What are your general thoughts on the Speed vs Streety?? Ride safe man!

I've had a grom brand new and loved it to bits! Sold it for my ex to replace her car... big mistake. I now own a street 675r, ive ridden a ktm 790 duke, ridden an r1.... I have to say I get the most fun out of the grom by far. Slow bike fast, awesome fun and relatively safe, just makes you smile! The 675r is awesome, the 790 duke was pretty damn good too but the r1 was kinda.... ott. It is far to much of a machine to enjoy on city streets. They're great don't get me wrong but there is essentially no point to a litre +

my dilemma. Traded my '10 street triple for a '19 speed RS. Better on longer trips, Hwy - more planted and crazy acceleration , but still feels like riding a bull vs the street where I always wanted a tad more torque, HP, but that thing fit me like a glove and was telepathic. After 2000 miles, Im still not in love and its not a great commuter ... too committed (seat position)... may trade for a '20 ST3 ... or the KTM SDR hahaha
