    I found a Mechanic just like the one you talked about. He owns a small shop out in Ditmer Missouri. He fixed my Subaru Legacy for only $300 when Import shops wanted to charge me over $1200 for a camshaft seal. he had no prior experience working on Subarus. I always have respected that man. He was an old dog who liked learning new tricks. He was honest. He also replaced my crankshaft seal. As an A&P and Machinist, he gave me a lot of inspiration. I always want to learn and be passionate about my work. Never be afraid to try new things.

    I follow the Zuckerberg method. It consists of following a potential mechanic home after they leave work and then keeping tabs on them for a while before I make any decisions about them. This includes checking their mail, their trash, the people they associate with, where they go, their credit worthiness, and things like that to get a better idea of who they really are.

    Good starting point Scotty.
    By stating not to rely on the internet when trying to find a good mechanic; Are you trying to say that you can't believe things on the internet?
    As far as certificates go, some people are book smart, and can only take tests well, while others can only turn a wrench well. Stay away from both.
    You have others that can take tests because they learned what was in a book [Service/Shop Manuals] and turn a wrench.
    Stay away from those who can't learn, and only fix by luck.

    depends, it's been proven that on highway speeds, the act of opening the windows creates as much drag as running an Ac compressor, so AC one would make sense on a hot highway. But in a city stop and go, turning the AC off would get better gas mileage as window drag is minimal at slow speeds.

    I'm not trying to be rude... But just because someone is old and has been doing it for a long time doesn't mean they are a better mechanic than someone who has been doing it for less time. Sometimes the old blokes have no clue with the new stuff and struggle to use computers. If I see a mixture of young and old heads, I'd feel more comfortable... the young guys teach the old guys stuff and vice versa... But if you get a shop full of old guys with stubborn heads and think they know everything that can also be a problem.

    Even though a nice clean shop looks tempting still focus on the people working there. I know a mechanic who specializes in MBs and had all the proper SDS equipment but had a dinky little shop in the back of a unit (just a small sign out front) but he's busy as can be and did quality work at a fair price. There were much fancier shops in the area and of course the dealership and whiles many gullible customers were going there for the expensive coffee they didn't realize that the high running costs of those shops meant expensive repair bills and quality of service wasn't all that. Never judge a book by it's cover.

      I agree, I've kind of chopped off my dealings with the local toyota dealer...sold my truck too. Seemed like the last few times I went in, they had different service people, different mechanics, etc. Suddenly finding stuff wrong when I knew damn well there wasn't a problem but mentioned a few issues I had when it was under warranty and they couldn't seem to find those problems until the truck was out of warranty, then suddenly they noticed the $2k front differential growling/howling noise. The notorious leaking water pump well of course they don't want to recall those because it would cost them millions of dollars. Rear axle bearing issues, etc. Oh and the notorious ( not just Toyota) over-price "cabin air filters". Yeah those damn filters don't do shit, but they'll sure as hell charge you $30 for one. I made my own filter that I could pull out and wash and put back in for $20...they tried telling me it needed changed the next oil change, I said umm its reusable and washable. Well we don't offer those, I said no shit you don't because you want to charge people $30 for a damn useless filter that doesn't filter shit...if that filter did anything the inside of my damn truck wouldn't be covered in dust all the time.

    I had a tow bar fitted to my VW Caddy, a couple of young men were doing the job, well, guess what, they pulled apart the entire interior. I was most pissed off to the point that I didn't take it back there to let them fix their mistakes, they broke my trust. I had to refit some of the interior trim as it was not put back properly, and I had to buy a new interior light for $50 because the guts were ripped out of the interior light, as I worked out, what they did was they removed the roof without removing and disconnecting the interior light, which would only have taken a few seconds to do. Some people are just idiots. According to the Volkswagen dealer mechanic who I default to, all they would have needed to do was to remove the interior wall on the right side of the van, and the trim under the drivers door (Australian right hand drive) to feed the cable though to the fuse box, meanwhile on that same side simply plugging the trailer isolation box into the loom, they did not need to pull apart the whole interior, these idiots justified why they pulled apart my van by saying they followed the instructions, what a load of bull.

I have a gear box. i spilled little fluid replacing upper line Against my wishes wife bought 2013Crys T&C van. They put the wrong lug nuts on it. We took a trip to NJ. 65-70 MPH 6 lanes traffic Garden State parkway and the wheels come loose. Took it in for exhaust smell when accel'g.(wrap around warranty extra $3k waisted) Van never left a drip on garage floor. they Claimed the CV seal trans was bad/ leaking on exhaust ONLY at high speed???(not covered). "ON the wrong side of the van." exhaust is on Pass side not driverside. They Sprayed trany fluid to look like leak. While spinning at high RPM you'd expect spray on other components?? No flluid on bott of trany housing or anywhere else(not even at the seal). Kept van 4 days claiming to have to put back together? Not one bolt /nut had been turner I've taken a lot of wheels apart some bolts are torq'd There'd be some sign a socket/ wrench had applied- some pressure somewhere/ moved washer.( I found cracked pipe at resonator) This guy has the NY state trooper contract. wonder how bad he's ripping off the tax payers? S&S auto NY.

    It is always good to know and talk to the mechanic (technician) that will be working on your vehicle. I've been to several shops where the owner is a competent mechanic, but sits in the air-conditioned front office and schmoozes with customers all day. The people who are actually doing the work on your car are young kids fresh out of trade school (who are desperate and will work for cheap).

    If you frequent an auto parts store, ask one of the old guys who work there if they know a good mechanic. If the guy knows a lot about cars, chances are, he may know of a good mechanic.
    That's how i found my mechanic. I had an issue with my car and asked one of the knowledgeable old guys there if he knew anyone good. I was referred to a local master mechanic (if I recall properly) with 40 years under his belt. Fixed my problem for a fair price.
    I prefer to DIY, but sometimes you just don't have the experience, tools, or time to do it. And if it isn't under warranty, why go to a stealership??

  • @Samp4rk24
    @Samp4rk24 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! Spot on. Especially with your point on "word of mouth." If a mechanic takes care of the customer and the vehicle, the customer is going to go no where other than that mechanic's shop because they know the guy is fair and truthful.
    A good mechanic shop is a consistently busy one. This might not apply to all but in my opinion, a bad place may be busy one day, but not the next because people realize that the mechanic is ripping them off or do a bad job, they won't go back.

  • @briankdrag
    @briankdrag 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's good advice about the "no old guys" warning. I never thought about that, but you're right. All the good shops in East PA have one or two old timers sitting on stools and yukin' it up with big smiles. All the bad shops have young men with bad attitudes with tattoos to match.

    My local mechanic has a bunch of junk cars laying around his garage. Most of them are there because he told some of his customers they're better off to junk their car, but they just haven't picked them up yet. They pile up and once a year he'll tell everyone to get rid of them or charge them for it to sit in his lot. He's a great mechanic
