This is such an important episode. Not only does it set up a lot of sub-plots and themes, but it's the moment to really let viewers know for the first time that paying attention and making theories will be rewarded.

The cool thing about season 1 is that Alex Hirsch had all the episodes written out before Tourist Trapped even aired, which allowed him to included throwbacks like Blendin appearing in earlier episodes

There was like- so many things Dipper could've done to avoid Mabel losing her pig
-He could've let Mabel win Waddles _first_ , then have her be part of his long plan

-He probably could've just let Wendy get hurt, then _avoid_ Blendin since this time he knows he'll be coming to knock him over.

I hate the people who hates this episode for Mabel.
People are like "Mabel ruined any chance of Dipper and Wendy being a thing for a pig", but...
1. Dipper and Wendy wasn't going to happen on this episode, not matter what.
2. Dipper put Mabel into it for absolute not reason. Literally he could have been doing everything without her.
3. Mabel has had innumerable times to bond with Waddles due to time-traveling.
4. Pacifica wasn't looking very nice with the pig (Hell knows what she had planned with the pig, and probably nothing good)
TL;DR: People was looking for any reason to hate Mabel, even if never was Mabel's fault... And they won't accept they're wrong.
Plus Wendy is too old for Dipper
1. It's not about Dipper. It's about Robbie. He's a horrible person (at least until Love God).
2. 100% agree. Just put Soos up there. A perfect example of how while the show"s LORE is good, the plot constantly trips over itself.
3. Dipper could just go back on his own to erase all that. Problem solved. Again, I blame the plot.
4. And? (Although it's funny seeing her get pecked at by the chicken at the end)
5. She also (in other episodes, so don't try to say I'm misremembering anything) guilt-tripped Dipper over being smarter than her(not his fault) and denied humanity a golden age of knowledge TWICE. She was even willing to knowingly let the apocalypse happen for 75% of "Escape From Reality".
5A. Stan's well-known for lying, so odds are he lied about making up the events of "Abaconings".
TLDR: I'm honestly more mad at the writers for this one. My greivances with Mabel are elsewhere.
Well, at the very least Pacifica seemed to care about her ponies, and I've heard people discuss that animals are how she escapes from the abuse of her parents.
Also, Stan straight up says 'I'm about to make up a very interesting story about him' just before he starts Abaconings.

And feeling inferior to Dipper about being smarter is fine, in the episode she does it in, both are wrong but Dipper understands why she did, feels bad, and changes his behavior. She only was content with the apocalypse for 1 episode, weirdmaggedon happened over a 3 episode run. So that’s 33%, not 75%. Actually counting the run time of an episode to prove a delusional child is being selfish is ridiculous. We can do it for any ep Dipper is selfish in too.
Nothing morally wrong with this episode, unlike the RV one. You’re not allowed to act selfish to cut off multiple ppl from what they want. That’s selfish. Treating Wendy like a prize is also bad.
I personally don't like people that watched the whole show and hate Mabel. Their main "reason" for it is that she is selfish, but let's be real, Dipper is just as selfish as her

It is fun how they stuck Blendin in the background of earlier episodes. You never know when little details like that will come into play. Kind of reminds me of the Steven Universe episode when Steven could time travel and started jumping to random points, including one that was from a later episode.
This episode also had a new character we hadn't seen before. See if you can spot them.

I believe this episode is an example of the Absolute Point; no matter what Dipper does, he's still going to hit Wendy in the eye and give Robbie an opening to give her an ice cone and ask her out. And Mabel gets Waddles.

For those who keep talking or saying that people hate Mabel in this episode, let me leave something clear:
People don't hate this episode for Mabel, they hate how the narrative punishes Dipper's selfishness while also rewarding Mabel's selfishness at the same time and playing favourites with the twins: in this sole episode, Dipper did wrong in going back in time, yes, but so did Mabel by purposefully trying to mess the timeline, almost destroying it and getting them killed just out of spite to make Dipper mad, got Blendin in jail and guilt tripped Dipper again by hurting herself against a pole until she got what she wanted from him. Dipper is actively punished for his mistake and selfishness until he fixes his mistake and learns his lesson, Mabel however gets it all shrugged off as if she was totally in the right for nearly destroying the entire time and space, getting an innocent person in jail and ruinning her brother's entire plan and day by getting to keep a pig that she had met, at best, a couple of hours prior, and that as we see in following episodes, she makes NO effort to even take care of and even encourages destructive behaviour.
I know many people will say that Dipper didn't lose anything with Wendy because it wasn't going to happen in the first place....but people forget that THE SAME THING APPLIES TO MABEL'S CRUSHES, with the difference that Mabel DOES get away with placing her crushes and wimsies above Dipper's even if she gets him fired or destroys his plans or anything he wants in the process. And Mabel's crushes are even MORE unreallistic than Dipper's crush over Wendy, don't forget that Dipper is almost 13 and Wendy is 15, that's just 2 years of difference, however we've seen Mabel date with the equivalent of a 17 year old in the first episode and no one batted an eye about it, heck, we even saw her crushing with guys that were in their 20s, and she gets away with it every single time without anyone critizing her. We can't dismiss Dipper's feelings over his crush then enable and justify Mabel's feelings over hers.
The problem isn't Mabel, the problem is how the narrative pampers Mabel and enables Mabel's selfishness while punishing Dipper constantly and force him to give up everything for her, even when Mabel is clearly in the wrong, but never gets called out, they turned her into a writer's pet.
THIS. JUST THIS. You took the words right out of my mouth. I remember watching this episode when it first aired when I was 12 and how Mabel's actions made my blood boil. This episode made me despise her guts for years before I eventually rewatched the show with a more critical lens and found the problem to be that Mabel rarely received the proper consequences for her actions. That's why she would leave me super salty in episodes like this where she would either not face anything or just get outright rewarded for her bad actions.
The only thing I would like to point out is that, technically speaking, Mabel spent multiple of the same carnival day with Waddles, so it was long enough for her to grow wholeheartedly attached to him. So I do think she was justified with getting angry at Dipper since he basically just took her pet from her. The problem was how irrationally she reacted and how little she paid for it
@@ryankramer8779 Exactly, it's incredibly frustrating to watch to see the co-protagonist being enabled, pampered and rewarded for her bad actions and act like she is totally in the right and a little angel when it's clearly not the case. And about Waddles, while I do get your point that she spent a lot of time...at best she spent a full day with him, considering all the hours spent at the carnival. I can understand her attachment but my point is that she still overreacted. I can love a dog or a cat I met in the streets and bond with said animal for a few hours and even an entire day, but I don't try to destroy the world for not getting to keep them. She totally overreacted and caused terrible things to happen and got rewarded for it. Her sadness is understandable but it doesn't enable her actions.

@@dracoangelrojo I agreed with everything you said until you called her the co-protagonist. By no definition of protagonist does she qualify as one. She has no character development, she doesn't push the story forward nearly as much as Gideon or Wendy, and she hasn't gotten many episodes focusing on her.
I'd put Wendy in the co-protagonist spot. The show makes more sense that way.

Honestly, this is one of my favorite episodes, I love the way little details are tied into different episodes. Btw your reactions are amazing and they always make my day. Also, if you're still looking for more shows to react to, I recommend The Umbrella Academy. It's on netflix, it's about a family with super powers and involves time travel, it's really fun and sweet and also has pretty good queer rep.
