Fun fact: Stan originally said “Blind the child” while pointing the light at Gideon, but Disney censors said it was too violent… then they let Alex Hirsch change it to “burn the child” lol.
Also, yes, the two cops are fruity, but Disney wouldn’t let Alex make it canon.
S&P has concerns about the line "Blind the child." We fear it may be too extreme for general audiences.
BURN THE CHILD >:)
So they have a problem with “blind the child” but not “burn the child”?
@@Mirthful_Panda Apparently so considering this came from the same S&P that thought "Bottles will be spun" was too taboo and went against kids' values
@@adrianarias-hernandez7472 wow….
Alex Hirsch really tested Disney’s boundaries with Gravity Falls and what they would allow. I sincerely think that if Gravity Falls had never happened, then The Owl House would’ve never happened either, and I love both of these shows so it just makes me more grateful that we have them
If by "tested" you mean "fought tooth and nail", then yes.
Amphibia wouldn’t have happened either
The only reason mermando and dippers kiss was ok was because it was treated as a joke. Yes seriously.
It was also immensely helped by the fact that Dipper was saying "I hate this". I wonder if that was in the original script or if it was added because disney wanted it emphasized.
It is a joke, if a male character with no desire to kiss another male character is placed in a situation where he must and this creates awkwardness in said character, that is comedy.
@@lazymansload520 It is a joke, but it should also be ok to show gay people kissing when it's not a joke, which we've finally gotten 6 years after Gravity Falls aired [which ended in 2016] in the Owl House.
Gravity Falls struggled so hard to have queer representation, the only way it could be included was through the stereotypical gay cops buddy cop duo, and only subtextually.
As a kid I didn't even realize they were a couple, and as an adult I can't help but feel disappointed in this kind of representation, despite Alex Hirsch's best intentions. There wasn't anything he could do, and I get that, but I wish we didn't have to get treated as a joke just to be represented and accepted on screen.
I know it's a cartoon, but new cartoons represent gay people so well these days it's hard to come back to the classics and realize their representation wasn't as great as I remembered and highly stereotypical.
Sorry for the sudden vent, I didn't realize I was this upset about it until I started typing.
@@LoreCatan I wouldn’t call it stereotypical. They were doing the best with what limited time the company let them devote to it
@@lazymansload520 I'll agree to disagree here, it can be both. You can't tell me they aren't a stereotypical comedy relief gay couple.
Two things that always can be expected with reactions to this episode:
1. The prediction of Mermando being a Merman before he reveals it.
2. The concern about the poor boy in solitary. "WHAT DID HE DO?!?!"
I will be back to judge you
Edit: yeah, pretty much
His crime is too horrible to speak of.
I saw this exact comment in another reaction.
Also people realizing mermando can be thrown into the lake before dipper does his “reverse cpr”
@@jbleichman He knows what he did 🤨
What you're gonna realize soon is that this show is the reason why we have shows like Owl House and Amphibia, I won't spoil but just know they are going to be pushing a lot of stuff for Disney to accept
Chain effect of Alex hirsch
@@Orto-jj2di The Alex Hirch Effect
i’m not sure when but alex hirsch revealed in an interview that disney strictly forbade him from having lgbtq+ rep, and that the dialogue between the two sheriffs should be posed as “comedic” and not seen as “romantic”. he also said smth on twitter that was like “apparently happiest place on earth meant the straightest.” 🙄
You should hear how much Alex Hirsch had to fight to get that reverse CPR scene
It's been said that Gravity Falls walked so Owl House could try to fly
Really? He had to fight for that scene? I figured that they would instantly let it slide since this was SAVING A FREAKING LIFE
*Stan:* Burn the child!
Me: Stan you're too amazing of a character and the world doesn't deserve you
Oh yeah Stanford Stan”Ford”
Mermando is voiced by the same guy who did Tritonio in *Amphibia*
I didn’t know that, but now that I do I want to facepalm myself.
I knew I recognized his voice!
I remember watching Amphibia and being like “I know that voice-“ still surprised me but yea
That's why it sound familiar!
Huh….That explains a lot
WARNING: Personal head-canon that includes massive, huge, gigantic spoilers:
Due to being trapped in the pool drain, that kid came through Weirdmageddon with the least psychological trauma of anyone in the town.
Huh good point
Yeah, all he had to do was occasionally duck down from monsters and listen to the maddening screams of interdimensional horrors!😄
Lmao- 😂
At the end of the episode, when they were showing him be there through multiple seasons and events, I wish they had shown a glimpse of THAT event. People would've gone nuts with theories.
@@jcoulton4
The code at the end translates as 'VIVAN LOS PATOS DE LA PISCINA', Spanish for "Long Live The Pool Ducks".
This ties into Soos' running joke for the episode about believing that inflatable pool ducks are alive and planning a revolution.
Please don't give up on this show. The overarching plot starts coming together soon.
What makes you think she's going to give up on it? I ask because I haven't watched yet and I have a hard time watching people forcing themselves to watch something they're not enjoying (brings to memory all those times where you show a friend a funny video on youtube and they don't even crack a smile and you start feeling more and more dumb as the video continues), and I want to check before subjecting myself to that.
Only 4 eps b4 bill
@@kenjutsukata1o1 I don't know. I watched her reactions to Arcane, and they were fantastic. She seems to like it OK. Just not as enthused about this show yet, and I've noticed the time between the release of episode reviews has been pretty extended. I just wonder if it's because for the first part of Gravity Falls, the main plot is mostly hidden.
@@lendondain1 Fr
@@kenjutsukata1o1compared to her owl house reactions, she just doesn’t seem to enjoy it as much. I know there are obvious reasons she’d enjoy the owl house more, but it’s also been like 3 weeks since she posted her last reaction for gravity falls. She just doesn’t seem as excited. Which is perfectly fine. Not everyone has to like the same things. But I feel like she’s sort of indifferent when it comes to gravity falls
Every time I finish one of these reactions, I immediately want another; this show is gold.
Leaving a random little comment on an older video of yours that you'll probably never see, but on the off chance you do; you're amazing and I adore you :3
Awwww
Well thats cute
I ship them
Awww this is what I want for me and my gf (which luckily is how we are for the most part :3)
The thing that really makes me laugh at the ‘Wendy in a bikini’ joke is that Dipper said: “Really, at night?!” He knew Mabel was talking out of her a*s, yet still turned around.
The way Elijah said "Hi, youre the lifeguard!" to Wendy who immediately responded with "I AM the lifeguard" tripped me out for a sec
The cartoons are becoming aware.
3:43 I was hoping she would realize, and she even did the voice perfectly
Fr i deadass thought that was Amity's voice
@@smolapple8142 😂😂😂 right
This episode is one of my favorites. The Poolcheck guy cracks me up every time. This show is just so fantastic.
Once your done the show I HIGHLY recommend you watch the 10 year anniversary commentary Alex Hirsh did with some of the cast and crew. He talks about the absolutely insane notes Disney would give them for stuff to change because it was "inappropriate"
Just wait: in ten more years, we're gonna get Dana doing something similar with The Owl House
The way that Dipper was giving mouth-to-mouth to Mermando while drinking water and saying "I hate this" was hilarious!!!!!!
Sometimes I worry Elijah’s gonna watch a few episodes of both this and Kipo offscreen to keep up with everyone else.
Yeah, but kipo and gravity falls are will finished so she doesn’t have to rush it really.
That would pretty much negate the point of the reaction vids, plus they're all finished years ago so she'd be behind either way
Like amphibia
I want a true reaction to episode 19
She's behind either way since gravity falls ended like in 2016 so she can take her sweet time with it
Something I realized while watching this video is that technically, Pool Check committed a crime by forcing that boy to stay in solitary confinement. Also realistically, the kid would've died of hypothermia from staying their throughout the entire winter.
17:42 She just went straight from aww to "oh numbers"
Don’t you mean she just went gay from aww to “oh numbers”
Mabel: "Hey, look! Wendy in a bikini!"
Dipper: "Really?! At night?!"
😂😂😂
"I've been laughing for too long" is my favorite line!! Reminds me of Amity's line "I've been talking for too long"!!! I miss Amity from The Owl House.
Worry not, Alex hirsh made the cops as fruity as Disney would let him
12:16-12:24 I'm pretty sure Disney was concerned about this line specifically, and Alex responded with "you know...like friends." Even though he wanted them to be a couple from the start.
Mermando is voiced by Matt Chapman who is also Tritonio Espada in Amphibia and Steve in season 2 of The Owl House.
ong reallyyy?!?!!
Apparently this episode was incredible challenging to write, along with the rest of the series, to the point where the crew considered moving on. However, Alex Hirsch, series creator, was determined to make it work resulting in a great episode.
One obstacle was how to up the stakes of the love story as Mabel has a new crush every other week. Once they came up with the idea that it's Mabel's first kiss the story became way more compelling.
Fun fact: Dana and Matt helped Alex with Gravity Falls when you watch the season 2 finale keep a eye out for there names in the credit scene
Love that you saw the awkward Amity inspiration!
Elijah: "Ah Wendy your the lifeguard!"
Wendy: "I *am* the lifeguard."
Perfect👌
Cops: "With you, everyday is a dream."
Elijah: 😳
When you’re through with the series, you really need to see the videos of Alex Hirsch fighting with the censors. They’re hilarious 😂
This show is kinda like any other show where season 1 is usually just world building and we basically get introduced to the characters in season 1 and stuff but season 2 is where it really picks up the pace there's character development, LORREEE, deep topics and so much more
13:49
That cracked me up how Dipper kissed Mermando. That's a classic Disney
😘😘😘🤣🤣🤣
This has to be her longest Gravity Falls reaction so far. But I love it.
You have to take into consideration that Disney releases their content worldwide and some countries either censor or straight up ban representation. The Owl House is a perfect example as it doesn’t air in some countries because of representation. It will take a miracle for Disney to hire someone who isn’t afraid of taking risks, no matter the outcome.
13:52 exactly what the entire TOH community and fans have been saying ever since they announced a shortened season 2 luckily with the old CEO of Disney returning I belive TOH could either get a spin off series or at least a filler season of episodes that we all wanted
In terms of what Disney lets Gravity Falls get away with, you’ll soon learn that Alex Hirsh was the bane of Disney’s existence😭 he fought tooth and nail for most things and he could get away with it because of how popular Gravity Falls got. What were they gonna do? Cancel the biggest show they had at that time? Probably why they’re so quick to pull the plug on shows now before they get too popular and the creator can do whatever they want
This series did everything it could to exist on the very edge of Disney's censorship. You haven't even gotten to any of the boundary lines yet. This show is the whole reason later shows were able to get away with things.
I don't wanna spoil anything so you have to keep watching. Answers will come in time. The first season is almost entirely set up.
The two cops are together and canon in Alex’s and the fandom’s mind, but Disney wouldn’t let Alex put it in the show outright.
Yes, we may have Luz and Amity today. But ten years ago, Officer Durland and Sheriff Blubs were a breakthrough for everyone.
And before, for others, it was HSM2; and for others, it was "Cadet Kelly."
Elijah: Something about the word “moist”, erghh.
My brain: I LIKE THE WORD MOIST, ITS WHO I AM, AND IF YOU CANT ACCEPT THAT THEN WHATS THE POINT
YESSSSSSSS
Why is that a word people can't stand?
I've always been indifferent to it.
3:24 I love how Wendy responded to Elijah
Fun Fact, the two cops are a confirmed couple by Alex, but he wasn't allowed to confirm it while the show was still airing because Disney threatened to cancel the show.
There was actually supposed to be a lot of queer rep in the show that Disney cut
3:58 Yeah, in fact, if you analyze, there's a lot of plot and jokes from Gravity Falls that made it to another shows like Amphibia and The Owl House
Crying at the fact Elijah threw her water away cause that guy drank from that nasty ass pool.
I'll just say it throughout all these gravity falls videos i can't help but be impressed by how the heck she's able to tell if the whisper changed or not cuz it doesn't look like she pulls out the previous episode and listen to them side by side she can just tell which for me is crazy
As the saying goes: "Gravity Falls walked so that The Owl House could run." Alex Hirsch and the crew did a lot to push against Disney regarding certain things, allowing Amphibia and The Owl House more leeway (although they too still had to fight for a lot). It should also be noted that the second season was on Disney XD, which is for an older demographic than their regular channel.
i would say its more gravity falls RAN so that amphibia and The Owl House Could Run. it most certainly more than keeps up with the others.
the cops were supposed to be explicitly together and mabel was supposed to have a female interest in the valentine's day episode (they settled for giving her a rainbow sweater) none of these happened bc disney said no, also alex hirsh confirmed after the show ended that both wendy and mabel are bisexual
Dipper was not meant to be trans
@@kkkjvgukbvcj was just abt the edit my og comment, genuinely thought i read alex hirsh say something about that but was thinking about another show lmao
@@jinx8749 yes you were thinking of svtfoe
your gravity falls reactions always put me in a good mood
Please, me too
That’s the one I’m most excited for… because… reasons…
Can’t wait for 4 2 yknow ⚠️👁👻👦🏻🕴(best way I could but it )
Alex Hirsch, the creator, has talked about how Disney kept cutting more and more of the two cops together, to the point where anything between those two that ended up staying in, Alex had to find some way to convince Disney that that moment was plausible between friends or that moment was played for laughs.
Disney cut A LOT of bits from this show and Alex Hirsch had to constantly be fighting them back and forth.
“It’s the nights that are the hardest” 😂😂 always kills me
Disney not only actively opposed Hirsch making openly gay characters, they didn't have the guts to write an explanation when they asked why, they just talked to him and said not gonna work. They only started banging their chest with inclusiveness once they were sure it's safe.
The thing with the Mermando and Dipper kiss is that it was played off as a joke, and that's the only reason it was okay with Disney. Which is the same reason the relationship between the cops is never able to deepen or become anything more than a couple of one off lines, because in order to keep it in the show Alex Hirsch had make it seem like a joke.
Something I just realized is that since the show takes place in Oregon, they're probably putting Mermando in the Atlantic Ocean. And he said his home was in the Gulf of Mexico. Dude has a loooooooong way to go.
Alex Hirsch fought tooth and nail with Disney censors and even he was amazed at some of the things that he did to intentionally try to get them to refuse so he could do the toned down version and get it passed that they just randomly would approve the first version of.
The way that Mabel pops in and out of the water and surprising Mermando is hilarious!!!!
I can't wait for your reaction to the season finale it is insane the show really turns around. all I have to say is. your gonna love the antagonist.
Can we talk about how manipulative it was of Mabel to be like "Dipper, can't you sympathize with my desire to do anything for an unattainable crush???" When she KNOWS FOR A FACT that he's down bad for Wendy?!?!
Honestly if Mabel just told Dipper straight up “Hey there’s a mermaid trapped in the pool, wanna help free him” he would’ve definitely helped out.
I love your reactions and I swear I've been waiting weeks for this one. Thank you so much for doing this for us.
And remember that after the end of this season, there is a serie of shorts that you must see to understand things in the future.
Thanks you, and bye xoxox
6:49: Made Elijah throw the whole water away! 😆
2:37: Reminds me of the time when the voice actor for Angel Dust said "Moist" in Angel Dust's voice, to Ashley, the cleanup artist for HazbinHotel, to make her uncomfortable. 😂
God, at some point, you should listen to the notes Disney gave to Alex Hirsch as feedback on this show and how he responded. (He uploaded that at one point recently as a fun behind the scenes thing.) They busted his chops so hard over every little thing. I'm surprised the 'Dipper giving Mermando CPR' made it past censors too.
15:14 We all know what's like. We've all had The Crush™️.
I think this was mostly supossed to be a mabel episode. She is spending part of this summer experimenting with feminity and part of that is she is starting to get interested in dates and relationships. Because she is so young and has never been a real relationship she basses her expectations off of what she has seen in romcoms and YA fiction. So far every boy she met was either uninterested or turned out to be crazy. So this time Alex let her actually meet a guy who is like the ones in her favorite fiction stories, but because YA and Rromcom's relationships are really only written to last as long as the story plays out (often times the characters are to busy saving the world to really get to know each other) Mermando had to leave at the end of the episode, and he and Mabel separated. Dipper spent the episode crushing awkwardly on Wendy because he is to shy to socialize without Mabel and spends any social situation he cannot follow her around doing just that.
There are a lot of stuff you'll ask how Disney allowed it but Alex really fought the censorship department a lot. He shared several emails about it on his Twitter. Most of the stuff that was allowed was because it was ok as long as it was a joke or looked like a joke. Alex took advantage of that a lot to include representation.
You gotta watch Alex Hirsch's video about the S+P approvals when you're done with Gravity Falls.
The way that Mermando plays the guitar is so funny!!!!
I'm so patiently waiting for Elijah's reaction to episode 19. That's when the show really starts to come together.
Fun fact: Mermando and Tritonio from Amphibia have the same voice actor, Matt Chapman
I love that you made the sandlot reference cuz that’s immediately where my mind went too 😂
2:03 In Colorado There are heat waves like that. 6:57 How?! And Where are his parents.
Yes, the cops are a couple (my favorite guy/guy ship too). Alex Hirsch wanted to make their relationship more obvious, but wasn't allowed. He put his foot down on what we did get between them.
Alex, the creator of the series (and the voice actor for King in the Owl House) fought tooth and nail to get the queer representation this show had. He was one of the pioneers in pushing Disney so shows like the Owl House could be as amazing as it is today. ❤ the two cops were supposed to be a couple, but Disney refused. There are also other characters you’ll notice that are queer coded for the same reason. Gravity Falls walked so that Owl House could run. XD
3:27 OMG! I LOVE SANDLOT! Also, the name of the lifeguard in the is also named Wendy. Coincidence? I think NOT! 3:43 Same said for this.
Only 4 more eps, (spoilers in the replies)
Until HIM!
Until Elijah meets HIM.
The Beast with One Eye
Yes until HE appears
Imagine Elijah reads the comments and sees this.
If I remember right in the original scripts, the two police officers were supposed to be gay. Disney of course axed that so the writers just edged the line as long and as hard as they could get away with.
Alex Hirsch is a major Queer Ally. Disney censored a lesbian couple during the love god episode so Alex doubled down with making Blubs and Derlin full blown matching dog sweaters gay.💙💙
Amity's often compared with Pacifica, but crush wise, she went full Dipper.
Pacifica can be seen in one shot, but she doesn't seem the type for public pools.
Attacking me with water reminded me of Eda.
Probably Stan at his angriest, and over a chair. XD
Pool Check has art by Aaron Springer, and voided by Michael Rianda who had similar anger apparently.
Mabel ships her friend Candy with the guy in solitude. Thinks it just feels right.
16:05 Iger is actually why we got Owl House s1 and 2, cuz he greenlit them. So I’m glad he’s back. Wish he returned sooner tho!
Just became a member since you are one of the most on point reactors I've ever seen
One thing i never noticed about this episode is that mabel spends all of it flirting with a guy, within view of gideon, but gideons too busy screwing with stan to notice.
Disney has always been okay with implicit rather than explicit queer rep, like queer coding Scar, Ursula, or Hades. But I think homophobes always block explicit queer rep.
As someone who used to live on the west coast, this episode is accurate in that some days the weather just randomly becomes oppressionly hot
0:01: That goat's name is Gompers, btw, Elijah. 😁
Regarding the whole “you can’t just be a life guard”, as a former lifeguard myself, you DO need a couple weeks of training before you’re certified. However, at my pool, we DID have junior lifeguards who weren’t given full training and shadowed the full time lifeguards. They were basically just kids who wanted to be lifeguards when they were old enough to work getting some on-the-job experience. It was borderline an honorary title.
I agree with u %100 on the Owl House comment with Dipper giving reverse CPR. It seemed so stupid with the whole Owl House debacle
Another person already said it, but Mermondo and Dipper "kissing" was okay because it was treated like a joke. Cuz apparently kids are too young to know about gay relationships but not too young to discriminate against them. :(
If you ever wonder how did they get the greenlight for something just keep in mind Alex fought to the nail for everything, I often like to compare it to "it" the book, if you know how that ends then you can merely guess what stuff the editors had to cut and BOY did they returned him the drafts for revisions quite a bit
Mermando is my favorite Mabel love interest (not that there's much competition for that lol). They seem to form a genuine connection as people, and she legitimately changes his life for the better
Can’t wait to see her react to episode 19, she’s going to give Gideon the Kikimora treatment
That chief lifeguard guy is one of my favourite characters in the whole show
Hey, without _Gravity Falls_ blazing the path 10 years ago, we wouldn't _have_ shows like _The Owl House_ and _Amphibia_ today.
The _initial_ plan for sheriff Blubs and deputy Durland was to turn the old trope of the grizzled veteran cop and his dumbass rookie partner on it head. Where, in a conventional cop show, the veteran cop would always but the rookie's chops for everything, in this show the sheriff would crack up at everything his deputy did and really appreciate his partner. Over time, this kept taking on a certain subtext - which then turned into just… _text_ by the end of the series. 😁
This is in my opinion one of the funniest episodes of this show
Pool Check is the scariest character on the show. Also, Horray for The Sandlot! I loved that movie as a kid, and it was certainly not because I had a crush on Benny.
