Black Cubans embrace their ancestry without being afrocentric by a} not denying that they are black, b} with their african based religion, c} with their music. d} with their dance. If you look at black religious chants and dances in Cuba, not only are the dances purely african, but many of the words that they use a Yoruban. No, caribbeans from the English speaking world are as African as black Cubans. That's a fact.
Moniqtee The Cubans who are European focus on their European culture and the Cubans who are African focus on their African culture. For instance, a Cuban like Ryan Lochte who is white is going to focus on his European culture and a Cuban who is black like the late Celia Cruz is going to focus on her African culture.
It’s amazing how he actually LOOKS exactly like his DNA results. All of it showed up in his hair, eyes, skin, tone, bone structure. None of it was shocking.

LemonDrop they did not kill all of them. If that were true then how would people have indigenous ancestry. They were forced into assimilation and ended up interbreeding with Europeans and Africans, to create the modern mixed Latino that we all know today
LemonDrop there is a modern Hispanic. *Some (many) were killed. Once again, if the all of them were killed, we wouldn’t have any Latinos with Native ancestry in the Caribe or throughout Latin America. Therefore many of them interbred due to forced assimilation. Though we come in all colors, the majority of our DNA (and the entirety of our cultures) come from the “3 raíces”. Most of us are hybrids of Indigenous, West/north African, European. That is the modern Hispanic. I’m saying this... as a Cuban of those 3 roots.
LemonDrop you are an exception. When you are dealing with numbers... most of Latin america is mestizo. Therefore they’re the “modern Latino” which everyone knows and associates with the region. That’s not to say that other ppl can’t be Hispanic/Latino, but they’re minorities and exceptions, like with many Miami Cubans (though some are mestizo)

It was obvious he would have African ancestry if the dark skin didn't give it away history of the islands in the Caribbean Cuba, Puerto rico and Dominican Republic were hubs for African Slaves to the new world. 69% of Cubans have Sub Saharan African ancestry, 50% of Puerto ricans have Sub Saharan African ancestry and 84% of Dominicans have Sub Saharan African ancestry. His DNA proves that he is related to Dominicans by DNA because of his African ancestry.

My mom is African and my dad English, but STILL. They are 100% African! There are some that look mixed but that was ONLY because of the colonization by Britain in the past. But mixed people were far and few between. Heck I stood out as being mixed lol And I'm black American.

I’m half Trini and I know at one point Trinidad had Spanish history but I didn’t think people from non-Hispanic islands would have (in particular) spanish blood/ancestry like the original comment suggested. Reminds me of when I was setting up an Intercultural Day for my class. I was going to put up flags for all the kids' ancestral nationalities, so I asked the parents about their cultural backgrounds. About two or three parents simply said "American." And I'm like, "Okay, but what else?" "Just American."
Look, I'm white, and I know I'm not 100% American and that my ancestors come from all over, mostly Europe, who eventually came to America seeking new opportunities, which makes me proud. So I find it sad how people lose touch of their cultural backgrounds, not knowing their family history or where they came from. True, our DNA doesn't define us, but it's still interesting to know where you came from.

I just got here but as a Dominican I can honestly say I have never ever thought I wouldn't like to be related to Cubans, nor have I ever heard another Dominican say such thing. Actually most of us think really great things of Cubans, they're greatly educated people, joyful and great dancers. I guess the hatred is just one sided. So I feel a little sad he has such strong negative feelings towards us.

The meaning of his African roots: He is an Afro-Cuban; the descendants of the African (Hebrew) slaves who were brought to the colonies of Spain in the "new world" mixed with the aboriginals and the slave masters either by force of their volition. The Native American are those aboriginal peoples of the Americas, of course.
It's funny that he didn't want to be Dominican, for they have the same exact story, and are from the Bantu Expansion nations of Africa as well.
Now, most people do not understand that Oliver Cromwell, protector of the British Crown, betrayed the crown and banished the royals and their families to the West Caribbean and the Americas. The Saxsons, Jutes, and Anglos replaced them. The true Crown overthrown by Cromwell were placed on the slaves ships leaving from the UK to Africa's West Coast to pick up additional slaves, then off to the new world with their cargo. The Scots, Irish, and British that were aboard as slaves were black. Thus they were mixed in the populations of the African slaves.
What's so weird about the mix? The majority of Latin Americans have a similar mix, just the proportions of each group change. What is weird is that people somehow didn't know it, or even more pathetic, that the guy himself has no fucking clue. I would have guessed it just by looking at him.

I love this one and Karen's. I think for many people who don't know what ethnicity they are these tests are fun. For those of us that have a strong sense of ethnic identity these tests can be scary. They can totally negate the feelings of belonging you have to a language, ethnic identity, culture, customs, etc. & both these videos beautifully illustrate that panic before finding out their results rather than the excitement that's usually seen by people who don't have that strong sense of ethnic identity.

Never heard of any such rivalry. However, there is a certain animosity between Mexicans and Puerto Ricans and Dominicans and Puerto Ricans that I did detect when living among both groups. There is also animosity between Argentinians and Chileans based on border issues. Cubans and Puerto Ricans are like brother nations and get along just fine. Then there was a time when Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay attacked Paraguay and almost wiped out the entire male population. I'm sure resentment
ran high for decades after that.

The rivalry at one time I thought were between Dominicans and Puerto Ricans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans, Puerto Ricans and Mexicans, Salvadorians and Mexicans, Dominicans and Haitians, Jamaicans and Black Americans, Irish and Italians, etc.
These people are really emotional. It surprises me that anyone would actually believes that they only have origins in one place. It's just not likely that 16 great grandparents were all from the same place.

Men in power, for example: Many slave overseers, or some in “management” of a farm or plantation would have sex with slave women.
