There is a film called Avalon which resonates with my family. I cane a from a big Polish family that immigrated from Poland, & 2 of my uncles had Americanized their last name & the rest of that family had disagreed with the 2 brothers causing a rift in the family, the same had happened in that film. I remember the shame my paternal grandfather had felt. He was a proud man it was the name he was born with & the pride he had. In the leading male character him & his family expressed the sane story line as my immigrant family had. My point is if you get a chance watch this film, it shows some of the same struggles that families faced at that time . Its a wonderfully written story/film. I cry everytine I have watched it. Avalon with Elizabeth Perkins & Aidan Quinn. It's truly about the Anerican immigration experience.
I cried with Scarlett. The same thing happened to my mother's, mother's family, but I do not know the outcome. My grandmother married an Iowa farmer and had six children. I know that her family name was popular in Lodz, Poland, where there were so many people brutally murdered and often buried alive. This whole thing was never spoken of in my family. I guess it was just too painful, but I am quite certain some of my family died there, out of the members left behind. So, I felt Scarlett's tears in my own eyes for the same reasons.
Im encouraging Jewish people to go back to Israel its a beautiful country with so much good food! If only I can live there I will but Im not Jewish only by heart.
My mother's side of the family also lived in Lodz! you should look them up in Yad Vashem or maybe even ask your family, I grew up hearing the stories about my great grandparents who survived the camps, and the stories of the ones who didn't, and I think it would be so sad if I didn't know of their stories and struggles. it's learning your own history.

My grandma's (mom's side) family escaped from Tzarist Russia in 1904 or so. She was about 4 and was one of 9 children to the Catskills, NY. They had nothing, of course, and it was so scary. They worked at a hotel (including my wee grandma). My great grandfather died when he was 26. Funny - my mom called my dad, Marshall, Moishe (nickname). It is a very common Ashkenazi Jewish moniker. I feel a strong connection to my Jewish roots on both sides of my family. Scarlett, your story made me weep.
This is unfortunately such a common story for Jews. In my own family, through 23and me, I found that my great grandfather ended up on the Russian side...and the rest of the family that stayed in Poland perished except one that ended up in Chigago. It's haunting to read names of people with your mother's maiden last name and caues of death is "perished in Holocaust" (murdered would be the term I'd use more accurately.)
My grandmother's family had a similar story to Scarlett's, with some of them coming to the U.S. during the pogroms and others going to Europe. Those who went to Europe were all swept up in the Holocaust, but two cousins survived. They escaped a work detail and hid in the forest and joined a band of resistance fighters. Your comment caught my eye because of Chicago. In the 1980s my grandmother was in Chicago on a visit and a cab driver picked her up. My grandmother loved to ask people about their stories. He began to tell her his story and - - well, one thing lead to another in this conversation - - and it turned out that he was one of her surviving cousins. I guess it was like 23andMe, analog version. It was such an incredible thing, though. Anyway, just thought I'd share that. I wish I knew more about my family's history. Anyway, all the best. -JK
Perished sounds like what food does when it expires. Not what happened to our ancestors, who were MURDERED. I guess it is a way to white wash the past for some. Did you ever know the one of your family that ended up in Chicago? My mom and dad's mothers and their families escaped from Russia as well. My dad's dad's family came from Manchester and my mom's dad's family escaped from Poland at a very young age.
@@jbjacobs9514 we made contact through 23and me, but opportunity somehow didn't present itself to meet one another, even though we are both in the US! Even more so, only me, my father, and brother did dna testing- my mom refused, but interestingly, we found the relative on my mom's side!

I have a copy of Dr. Gates' book (though I have yet to read it), and had the privilege of listening to him speak at my alma mater over a decade ago. I also think it's quite interesting to know that had Ms. Johansson's great-grandfather stayed in Poland, we might not have been graced with her presence as an actor or person. Lastly, I'd like to share a tiny bit of my own family history. My maternal great-grandfather (mother's mother's father) left Northern Ireland and came to Philadelphia in the early 1900s, but was so homesick that he wanted to go back to his wife and three children (the fourth and eldest had died from diphtheria). Eventually, my great-grandmother, great-uncle, and two great-aunts came over to the U.S., and the family settled in North Philadelphia, with four more children being born (one of these children also died from diphtheria). The youngest of these children was my own grandmother, whom people have said I am very much like. I see where I've come from as something to be proud of, and will try to preserve my family history for as long as I can.
Thank you very much for your comment! We're so grateful to you for sharing your experience of hearing Dr. Gates speak, and for sharing some of what you've been able to uncover in your research, too! We hope that learning about and being able to pass down the stories of your family history bring a lot of joy. Have a great day, and thanks so much for watching! 🙏

My Mother's grandmother's sister's family stayed in Poland. A small town in the western part of Poland. They weren't Jewish, but according to family stories, they were killed when the Germans went through the town. My family tried to find more history by creating a family tree, but we are not coming up with much. I'm not sure how churches stored birth/death records back then, but maybe one day I'll get to travel to Poland and see if i could find out anymore details.
There is a lot of information on the net. My daughter is fascinated by family history and was able to trace both sides of my family and her family just doing research on the Internet. I would recommend to sign up to a genealogy group for beginners. If the church and the local government archives were not burned during the war there is a good chance that they were scanned and made available online. The records start at 80 years going back in time for privacy reasons so you won't find anything more recent. My daughter made a family that goes back 350 years and fraternal about 300 years. So far. I'm talking about Poland obviously. I discovered fascinating things about my ancestors.
There is a lot of Polish historical records online. Moreover, see if you can find help and direction at the Michigan Polish Center (?). I am not Polish, but I know they exist here and they do have some records about Polish immigrants in the US.
My daughter is into genealogy and traced my side of the family back to late 1600s. Churches then the occupiers' administrations (during the 123 year long partitioning period) kept good vital records. It varied from place to place because many churches or archives burned during the war. My family records were in Latin, Polish, Russian, and German (Austro-Hungarian Empire not Prussia) depending on the period. I'm it for the US for my family. And will probably be it. My daughter and ex-wife live in Europe and I'll be moving back as well. After 40 years of living in the US.
She has already a quick way on having a best-friend like Chris Evans who portrayed as Steve Rogers aka Captain America. Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff aka Natalia Alianovna Romanova aka Black Widow's love-interest.
Thanks for stopping by, Carol. We hope you'll watch the entire episode and others from the program. Take some time to update your family tree and find new details about your ancestors.
The stories from the people who lived and died during WW2, astonishing and epic! I found a family connection which tore my heart out alike this. Some families have stories that are so difficult to share that people need to be drunk
I worked in a health facility and one of the members had concentration camp numbers tattooed on her arm. She mostly kept it covered, I never asked her about it, but I knew from her files what it was.
My grandmother arrived in NY in 1916 from Trebon Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. She saw everyone buying green Bananas which she had never seen before. So she purchased some and got on a train to Chicago where relatives would meet her. Once underway she tasted a green banana which she found awful and tossed the remaining bunch out the train window.
I'm a member of the LDS church, its encouraged that we keep taking the time to search for our loved ones through genealogy. Our ancestors paved the way for us, plus we all have a purpose here. When we go looking for them, they come searching for us. I have never felt so inspired to go back and continue doing my genealogy, they're waiting for us. Could you imagine their stories?? The next life is going to be beautiful!! Perfection comes not now, but in the next life 🙏🏾❤ Keep trying your best in everything you do and be kind 💞
Please pressure your church to stop baptizing Jews that died in the Holocaust-people who refused to give up their religion and identity and died for it, your church claims as Christian for your own purposes. They would turn over in their graves if they knew this (and had had graves which they mostly don't) -it's an anathema to Jews. They and their families would be horrified.

ISRAEL is fighting for all of us to ensure that it doesn’t happen. 40 Million Jews have been slaughtered over the past 3500 Years, throughout Europe, the Middle East and Morocco and only because they were Jewish. The only safe Haven for them, Britain, Ireland, Australia, NZ, South Africa (no longer) Canada and the USA. India protected the Jews and is a great Allie of Israel. Lord Israel, strong and mighty in the field of battle. Scarlett lost all her family who stayed behind. I have an old friend in Toronto and part of his family went back To Villa before WW2 and they perished of course, because they didn’t listen to the facts. The fact is that the Muslims recite their mandate 17times each day to destroy not only Jews but also all Christians throughout the World.
There is a film called Avalon which resonates with my family.
I cane a from a big Polish family that immigrated from Poland, & 2 of my uncles had Americanized their last name & the rest of that family had disagreed with the 2 brothers
causing a rift in the family, the same had happened in that film.
@Nicky L Nicky, I don't even know their names. I only have a family name that is apparently as common as Smith in the USA.
@Leptune Cannet Toepfer.
@Leptune Cannet Maybe we are kin. :)

Softer than baby faeces
-JK
Jewsish golden age was in spain under arab caliphate and when in 1492 spainish inquistion happened ottoman empire helped jews by sending its navy

I can try.
