    This is who all human beings should be proud of, a girl (gender does not mean anything) that does something to help others out. Not the stupidest song clips or the football legends. You are a beast, keep it up, and thanks for the kind guidance

    Oh my word . . .
    Grace, I cannot thank you enough. I just sat down and watched the entire playlist. I'm just about convinced to go ahead and do the CELTA. I've been looking for "insider" information for years now, and now I've been led to your videos/playlist. Thank you so amazingly much for spelling out your experience for us, as well as tips--and especially, for going into depth. This is just what I needed. THANK YOU SO VERY ETERNALLY MUCH!!!

      +Joann Sifontes Thank you so much for such a kind comment! This really made my day! Honestly, the reason I made them was because I was looking for insider experience as well and couldn't find it! It's surprising! So, I'm so glad I could help you out! If you have any questions please let me know!

      +GraceGoesGlobal I do have another question: I get the impression that many places put CELTA graduates (?) at the top of pile, even choosing CELTA trainees over MA holders; as though a CELTA holds more weight than a MA in TEFL/TESL. Is this true? What do you think? This is something else I've been trying to figure out for a while . . .

    • @thegracecass
      @thegracecass  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel that may only be true if someone had an MA in something totally unrelated to teaching/English. My understanding is that if you have a CELTA you are normally put at the top of the pile of TEFL applicants. CELTA is highly respected but not quite to the level of an MA.

    I'd like to thank you so much for all efforts you've made through these five videos in order to give us the gist of this crucial course (CELTA) they were plenty of useful and priceless information to follow and succeed. But for us as non- native speakers it would be a real challenge and only overcoming the language obstacle would be a big step forward, let alone academic issues in terms of teaching English .

    Hi, Grace!
    Thank you so much for these vídeos! I'm doing the CELTA course from 24th October to 19th November. I have to say that I'm not only exited but also scared to death! I have heard so many things about the course... I'm really scared about the four assigments and the planning of the classes. I've never taught before well just private classes but that has nothing to do with teaching a whole class.
    Thank you for the tips and the advice Though I'm still scared, now I know what to expect.
    I also have the book you talked about 'learning teaching' from Jim Scrivener.
    Again, thank you so much for your vídeos!

    First and foremost I would like to thank you so much for posting this video! I am currently an Australian year 12 student and have been looking at reviews and CELTA for a while now and have not found much information about tips and advice so beautifully constructed and engaging like this! I would also like to thank you for the book recommendation, I'll be ordering that very soon to slowly read over. An extraordinary playlist about the CELTA course. Honestly speaking, you uncovered this mysterious one month tough, rigorous and demanding journey. The information about dividing the candidates into two groups to deal with two different levels is decisive. According to your experience, how to teach language skills to elementary students? Was that a bit challenging given that their linguistic abilities are limited? What kind of material to use for teaching receptive skills and productive ones to elementary learners? Many thanks in advance.

    Hi Janet (I can't seem to link your channel, so I hope you get this!) Thanks so much for watching and I'm so glad they were helpful! You don't need to use the phonemic chart. We discussed it one day but for the course it wasn't necessary. Most grammar concepts weren't very complicated so you were able to prep during the course. Of course, the more knowledge you already have the easier you'll have it. However, I am personally not very good at grammar rules (I just find it boring) and I made it through unscathed!

      Have you ever taught English in Japan? Do you have any recommendations or thoughts, regarding teaching ESL in Japan? Also, how do you become a Celtra trainer?

    • @thegracecass
      @thegracecass  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've only been an assistant to an ESL teacher in Japan when I was younger, but Japan is a great place to work. There are so many choices, so it's all about your personal preference. Just know that the hours will probably be quite long, but the pay and benefits are good! Just peruse ESL job sites and you'll come upon tons of jobs in Japan, and see what you like. To become a trainer I think you have to have a certain amount of years of experience and then you just apply with companies that do CELTA training. Some companies require a certain grade like A or B in order to be a trainer.

    Hi Grace. I can't believe how detailed, exact,kind-hearted, sweet, lovely, helpful person you can be. I just watched all 5 videos of yours about CELTA and it was so helpful. I had good info but enjoyed the way you explained every detail. I appreciate your kindness and thank you so much for your time. The only thing I am afraid of is the assignment and writing. how can I find writing samples to know what and how exactly I am supposed to write?
    Besides, every site I look up for more information it is just mentioned that it is really good for you if you want to teach abroad. I want to ask how if I want to take this course to find better job opportunity in the US?
    I am not a native speaker, I am teaching for some years and now I am living in Japan. but my goal is to move to America in a year. so if you have any info about finding a better job opportunity please let me know. Thanks a billion again sweetheart

    • @thegracecass
      @thegracecass  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for such a kind comment! It really made my day! I'm so glad they were helpful to you! :) Don't worry to much about the writing, your instructors will explain in great detail what you need to write about and they are about two pages, double spaced. I found the writing to be one of the easier aspects of the course. It will help you get a job in the US, but you'll just have to know where to look. Without a teaching certificate from the US you won't be able to teach in schools, but in the bigger cities they'll have learning centers to work at. I hope this helped!

    Hi Grace, I'm from China. Was there anyone from your group a non native English speaker and still got a pass in the end? I'm so on the fence right now 'cause I only got 7 in IELTS, besides the course is so expensive and I'm a poor college students about to graduate in the summer. Plus will your trainers help you land a job right after the course? If so, then that would be perfect. 'Cause you know, teaching a language one has a passion for, meeting different people with varied cultural backgrounds, nothing beats that. So pleeeaaaasse let me know if I stand a chance.

    Grace, thank you for an absolutely OUTSTANDING series of videos!! I am extremely grateful, to say the least.
    I have tried to make sure my questions below haven’t already been covered in one of your videos. So my apologies if any of them have.
    I thank you sincerely in advance for your reply.
    1. For the job that you successfully applied for in Hong Kong, were you also required to have a degree of sorts along with your CELTA qualification?
    2. I am a relatively slow-paced learner. I like to read slowly, make summaries, re-read, read from different angles, blah, blah. It may take time to understand and absorb certain concepts. Provided I have pre-prepared for the CELTA course by reading the recommended books and doing the pre-course task, in your opinion, do you think I would cope?
    3. Grammar: You mention that the grammar on your CELTA course was not complicated. Can you elaborate? I have an opportunity to prepare in advance, but boy oh boy, there’s an incredible amount of grammar out there. I don’t know how advanced I need to go!!!!
    4. For your teaching lessons, did you have to do a lot of class management? I.e. arrange student group discussions, re-arrange desks etc.?
    5. Other than reading the CELTA recommended books, how else can one prepare for the course? It’s easy to read and read and read but for example I wish there was a way one could practice speaking in front of a class!
    6. For your teaching lessons, how did you gain access to teaching tools such as Cuisenaire rods; flash cards; posters? Did you rush off to your local stationers each time?

    • @thegracecass
      @thegracecass  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for such a kind comment! I am so glad you found the videos helpful! I will do my best to answer you questions!
      1. For my job in HK, yes, I did have to have a degree. It didn't matter what it was in, however. I'd say that's fairly standard for ESL jobs to need the applicant to have a degree, mostly for visa purposes. Although there may be exceptions.
      2. I'm actually pretty slow paced as well so I think you should be fine. The only aspect that really requires speed sometimes is the lesson prep because you might not know what your teaching until a day or two in advance. It is fast paced, but I think you'll be fine!
      3. To be honest, it's been a few years and I can't remember exactly what we taught but it never got SUPER crazy. You spend two weeks with beginners, easy stuff, and two weeks with more advanced. Nothing is so complicated that you can't relearn it in the couple days before you teach. I'm no grammar genius, so honestly, if I can do it, anyone can!
      4. Nope. Most of the time I just paired the students with the person sitting next to them or to the other CELTA trainees.
      5. I'm not sure what to tell you there, except maybe you can see if there are any ESL classes in your area that you could come and teach or assist with a lesson? Try community centers or libraries. I'm sure they'd accommodate you.
      6. We pretty much exclusively made our own or used the few tools the school had. You could print stuff for free at the school.

    Hi Grace! I just wanted to thank you for making these videos! For the effort and the planning and time and all sorts of trouble it took you to make this. It helped a lot! I enjoyed learning from you and I think that's what ESL teaching is about - making English learning fun and something to look forward to everyday. Anyway, I don't have a lot of questions to ask you since you've covered almost everything (that weren't explained by others who took the CELTA). But there are just a few questions that came into my mind while watching.
    1) Did they ask you to pass any kind of document from your university (transcript of records/diploma)?
    2) Did you have any non-native English classmates?
    3) I'm planning to take CELTA in Thailand because it costs a lot cheaper (and the closest to where I'm from - the Philippines). I believe that you lived in Thailand, specifically in Chiang Mai. Which site would you recommend (International House Bangkok/Chiang Mai/ Phuket)?
    5) Lastly, I'm planning to take it in January 2016. Is this advisable? Would I find schools that are hiring in February? And how long did it take you to get to your first job?
    I wanted to send you these as a message but I just thought it would be beneficial to the viewers if I posted it here instead. Again, thank you for your videos!

    I'm going to take my CELTA in four days, and I'm starting to freak out... english is my second language, and this makes me very nervous! So thank you very much for your vides, is both helpful and consolatory to have some detailed feedbacks from the inside! P.S. I'm reading the book before the course! XD

      Nerfeel I'm sure you'll do fine and good luck! If you have any questions let me know! My top advice is just - don't procrastinate! You'll be fine otherwise!

    I do have one question though. How much grammar should I know, before taking the course?

    • @thegracecass
      @thegracecass  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, you're talking to someone who is notoriously bad at grammar, and I survived! I would teach myself the grammar concept for my lesson the night before. If you can do grammar prep beforehand, that's awesome, but you'll be fine regardless.

    Thanks so much. Did your teacher suggest you " learnin teachin" by Jim Scrivener. 3 rd esition?I want to take celta next month. Should I get this book? As a pre course book.

    • @thegracecass
      @thegracecass  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I got the book near the end of the course, but I wish I'd had it from the start. Lots of what is taught on the course is in the book, so it'd be great to be familiar with the concepts since it is so fast paced.

    Dear Grace! Thank you so much for these useful videos! They helped me to gain more confidence before my CELTA course. I'm having it in few weeks. Can you advice something for not native speakers, who wants to take CELTA. For example, I'm ukrainian. And the scariest thing for me is if the students ask me questions and I don't know how to explain things... what I have to do? my reaction

    • @thegracecass
      @thegracecass  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mila Makarevich Hi Mila! I actually had the same fear even as a native speaker so don't worry too much! Just know that English grammar is far to extensive for ANYONE to know all the rules, so if a student asks you something you don't know just say: "That's a great question, and I will find the answer for you and get back to you." Then, once your lesson is complete you can search the internet or something to find the answer. I hope that helps!

      You're so kind! Thank you! CELTA will send you the pre-course task once you're accepted. It's not required but I recommend doing it.

    thank you so much for grace for your interesting videos i really learnt a lot from them i am thinking to apply for CELTA in August but i still don't know if to do it in my country Morocco or in London ? can you hive a tip concerning this?

      @thegracecass  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +sanaa najil I'm glad they could help! Honestly, I don't think there's any difference where you take it, it's all up to you. CELTA courses across the board are the same and have the same standard, so location shouldn't matter at all.

    Grace, here's a thought. Would you recommend scanning the class handouts in your Celta classes?
    This way, you can take them with you anywhere around the world. It maybe best to scan the lessons
    each evening, for that particular day's handouts. This way, it won't pile up. Obviously, one needs a
    functioning scanner to do this.

    Hi Grace,
    Thanks for all your lovely videos. They were quite insightful. My question to you is about getting job opportunities and a work visa post doing Celta. I'm an Indian and what I've heard is that non-native speakers find it really difficult to get work visas because people are usually racist at times. They feel that if an American or an European is teaching them, then they're getting value for money. Non-native speakers are usually looked down upon because of they're accent..So I would like you to give me a little piece of information regarding this.

    • @thegracecass
      @thegracecass  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Priscilla! Thank you so much for the question. Sadly, that is quite true in many countries. It's either a pride issue, where the student wants the "look" of being taught by a European or American, or they want to develop an accent like one of those countries. It's very ridiculous. BUT it really just depends on the country. Hong Kong was very, very picky but Indonesia seems more open to diversity. So, you may find it a bit more difficult but I'm sure you can still find work abroad. I hope this help! Good luck!! :)

    Hello Grace, I like your personal advice on getting into the celta certificate . By getting this certificate do you need to be native English speaker to get it? I am a bilingual teacher currently teaching both English n Spanish in a public school but I have taught ESL. I am really interested in getting this certificate ... I will appreciate your advice . THanks

    • @thegracecass
      @thegracecass  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Norma Mejia There's no requirement to be a native speaker and if you're already teaching I think you'll do just grand! It's intense and challenging for everyone, but anyone can do it if they stay focused and work hard! Good luck!

    Do you think this course would be difficult for someone who studied linguistics and taught esl as a volunteer?

    • @thegracecass
      @thegracecass  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That will definitely be a big help for sure! The main thing that's challenging is the schedule, really. So, if you don't have to teach yourself a lot of the grammar, then it will help so much!

    Hello Grace! After watching these videos, I feel so much confident about taking the CELTA course. I am from Argentina and I studied English Translation for three years, however I couldnt finish my studies. This course looks like the perfect option for me! I have only one question, do you think there is certain level needed for this course taking into account the content learned in the course? Do you think the applicants should have an advanced/profficiency level? Thanks in advance!

    • @thegracecass
      @thegracecass  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Thank you for the comment & I'm so glad you found these useful. I don't believe there is a specific level of English you have to have in order to take the course. The grammar was actually easier for the non-native speakers in my course. It is probably on the more advanced side of English teaching, but if you've studied English translation, I think you'll be fine!
