Thanks for this! I passed my CELTA last month, and really, everything you said is true....so much so that it could have been me sitting where you are saying exactly what you say....I was the oldest student, and criticised the course for not providing some sort of nice dictionary of all the terms used from day one. I think I learnt more about myself than about anything else! Well done bro and good on you!
Really interesting video. I'm sure you're aware as a CELTA student, a huge part of the process is ensuring that your ESL students are following you in the lesson, understanding all instructions and keeping up with the rest of the class. If a student is falling behind it's the tutors job to identify this and help the student. What's strange is that your CELTA instructors failed in this regard, and you passing was a result of you having to find a way to navigate the difficult experience you were undergoing. You passed, despite them. Well done you :)
Week 1- Ah, this isn't so bad....Week 2- Kill me now. Week 3- No, really. Kill. Me. Now. Week 4- a Russian gulag sounds amazing right about now.....and bam. You're done. And you will never, ever be the same again!
It doesn't match with the comment below… Hard to make myself an idea about how hard CELTA is. So many people have different ideas about it. Going from awfully hard to quite easy for some people.
HA HA... riffinandrantin, this was so accurate I couldn't help but laugh throughout the video. I'm laughing because I went through ALL OF THAT you described especially what you said in the beginning of your video. It's so good to know I am not the only one who felt that way when I went through this course. I went took the course in July of 2011 in Seoul, South Korea. Where did you take yours? Thanks again!
My course is starting in mid October. I really want to have a take on things before it all begins, and even though I've been a teacher I really think it's going to be challenging. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for this video. The most daunting part of it for me is the intensity as I'm a parent and don't want to neglect my poor child for 4 weeks! Argh! Imo x
You can do the CELTA course on a part-time basis at some places. I did it over 3 months, with 2 days attending the language school, so it is possible to fit it in with other work/children. We had a younger person on our course who was working all the time that she was not required to be in class, but I honestly would not recommend that myself! You need to do A LOT of research, reading and studying and preparation outside of those 2 days on a part-time course - way over the 120 hrs they casually mention on the info. I would still say that it was a very stressful time even over 3 months, and my course was unusual in that instead of the average age of the people doing the course being early 20's, with 2 exceptions in their 30's the rest of us were all around or above the 50 mark! But since I took the course, and passed (!), I have heard of people doing it part-time over 6 months or even a year. If you do decide to stick with the 4 weeks full time course, then this guy is right - do not expect to have a life other than the CELTA course (I would have said this even on the part-time course, but then I have not taught before, and not studied for many years either!) Either way, your fellow students on the course are definitely your lifeline - I could not have got through the CELTA without their support and help, even though they were also stressed out themselves!
@@janewhite3569 hi Jane, I am starting my part-time Celta course in about 2 week time 😬😬😬 super nervous even though I had taught for a bit before. I passed the interview last December but postponed till now due to some personal engagements, I've used all this time to prepare for the course but I still feel like it's not enough 😭 just hope that I'll pass...
Great insight. I did my Celta last month. I'm glad I did it but I wish I had tutors like the ones you had. Our center wasn't really very good and the tutors avoided trainees like plague, they were not helpful at all and we could barely ask questions.
I am the kind of person who laugh at theyself. but when I ask stupid questions I've noticed that my teachers want to laugh at me but they don't because they believe that laughing at a language learner is highly inappropriate.
The CELTA and rival Trinity CertTESOL are embedded in applied linguistics. When unfamiliar with linguistics, it is hard. I think the course are money making rackets. f it's a career you're after, go for an MA in applied linguistics and skip the CELTA.
Come on guys...you want hard. Get a master's degree in social work. Your going to school full time; high level of research and academic rigor; 2-3 day internship; plus 99% of the students work full time to survive. Anyone who can't sacrifice for one month might as well stay home. NOTHING IN LIFE WORTH HAVING COMES EASY!

Where did you take the celta?
Thank you very much for sharing. Are you american? Where did you get the certificate? Which country are you teaching now? :)
Why did you ever want to apply for CELTA ?
From where it is best to take Celta?
I think British Council would be best.please do a research before going into anything.
CELTA isnt the most expensive is it? I think TEFL is almost dubble - not to speak about the DELTA which is extremely expensive.
I m too scared
Don’t worry I passed my celta course last week.. it isn’t that hard.. and no one fails in this course

Do you think learning about linguistics actually helps you teach?
@@taral9920 Good question! You could top both.

We don't give a fuck about you master's degree in social work and how hard it is. It is not even the topic here.
