Your analysis of the classic Carpenters hits is very smartly stated. This review is the best ive ever heard, as ive been listening to Karen and Richard for nearly 55 years. They recorded so many great songs that were perfect and wonderful memories for this generation.
The Carpenters have a lot of great songs, but for me one song in particular made a connection with me and from what came out after Karen passed it was the story of her life. Goodbye to Love. Apparently, Karen never felt or believed she was loved or had any belief in herself or her talent. One story is that she crossed paths with John Lennon who told her how he loved her singing and how talented she was. She didn't believe him.
Love to hear your thoughtful analysis. Definitely a hard choice, but I keep coming back to a Song for You. Always feels like Karen is singing to me…and her voice just lingers long after the song has ended.
For me # 1 is Leave Yesterday behind, a hidden gem that's rarely mentioned. # 2 is This Masquerade, this cover is a masterpiece arrangement by Richard with amazing piano work and flute solo. # 3 is I won't last a day without you. There are so many great ones it's hard not to have them all in the top three, lol.
Carpenters are my favorite group. My top 3 songs are always changing but for now it's: "Ticket to Ride," "This Masquerade" and "Touch Me When We're Dancing."
Hey Mr. Mindset, I really enjoyed your presentation of your 3 favorite C songs -- well presented. We all have our favorites, but my vote goes to (1) Superstar; and (2) For All We Know. Several popular lady vocalists on the web are doing beautiful takes of Superstar, and the homage to Karen's rendition is impressive. The things is, there are so many great C songs -- including album cuts like "A Song for You," that we could debate favorites for hours. Anyway, thanks for the presentation.
I agree with those 3 completely but you've also got to add to that, goodbye to love, which showcase what the carpenters have to offer and after all these years will not only never get old but grow in intensity. Back in the 70s it stood out as an intense song I liked but was too young to understand. Now I can understand, it is all the more intense and valuable. Some songs we just keep re discovering over a life time. The same can be said about the 3 on the list though
Thank you Its neigh impossible to distinguish favourite from best. I can appreciate the perspective because it is offered in the spirit of shared enthusiasm and appreciation. Myself, in no particular order: Superstar, Close To You, We ve Only Just Begun, Top Of The World, Rainy Days and Mondays...
Music Mindset, thank you for your perceptive, articulate analysis of three Carpenters masterpieces. Many of their songs have become pop music standards because of the quality of the songwriting and of course, Karen and Richard's brilliant interpretations. I am glad that you credit the songs' genius composers. "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "We've Only Just Begun" were both written by Roger Nichols (music) and Paul Williams (lyrics). Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics) wrote "Close to You". These songs are universally appealing and remain fresh and impactful today.
MusicMindset, as we are all busy multi-taskers, I hope you have some time to react to one of their lesser known gems "A Place to Hideaway". Here is a link to a gorgeous remastered video of Karen's unforgettable performance th-cam.com/video/9FWfJhM1zvg/w-d-xo.html Thank you for helping to keep the Carpenters' extraordinary musical legacy alive!
"Rainy Days and Mondays" is a good choice, but "Superstar" is my favorite, maybe because it followed "Rainy Days" and provided a subtle shift toward more 'serious' songs. Not that "Rainy Days" isn't serious. I'd call it bittersweet. "Run and find someone who loves me." There's hope in that.
Welcome!! I truly appreciate your sentiment and hope we can do what it takes to keep you entertained and informed. We will always try our best. Thank you!
I actually had "We've Only Just Begun" played at my wedding in 1976 (that marriage only lasted 10 years😢). But my favorite song by the Carpenters is "Superstar"...so emotional and Karen's voice--perfection...chef's kiss!
Almost anything recorded by the Carpenters is wonderful but my favourites are: A song for you, closely followed by Goodbye to Love and Rainy days and Mondays
Of those three, I agree with your choice as I feel the best of the other two songs are all together in Rainy Days. But my favorite is For All We Know, Superstar is up there too. It’s like trying to decide which is your favorite candy bar made from milk chocolate, they’re all heavenly. I enjoyed your video very much !! 🙏🏻✝️❤️
All their songs are really good but the best songs are the ones you never hear unless you're a true carpenter admirer like I Have You.. One More Time..I Can't Make Music & so many more
@TheMusicMindset2023 I Agree 💯👍 by the way I just subscribed another artist who's really really good is Skye Edwards next to Karen Carpenter she's my favorite ..not broken.. clock to stop are songs From her amazing album Keeping Secrets what a beautiful beautiful voice this woman has
I can't fault your opinion. Those are my 3 top Carpenters tunes as well. My fav is "We've only just begun". At 69 years of age, this song reminds me of what it was like when life was full of potential. It also reminds me of my brother whom I miss greatly. I tear up most times this song plays and thats either Karens or Tori Holubs rendition. It further saddens me as Karen died at such a young age likely confused, in pain, and lonely due to her disease. I count myself fortunate as I lived my potential while some of those I valued around me, did not. Sigh. Peace.
I would say it is impossible to select a best. There are scads of equally impactful songs. Case in point: "I Need to be in Love". th-cam.com/video/mTVpNXG7iBk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rEclDcp6bJL0azpN and many more.
All of the Carpenter's songs are great, but I got my favorite! What's yours?
My favourite: The fuzz guitar in Goodbye To Love is pure genius - Richard's idea. It was the true impetus for rock ballads
My favorite "Top Of The World "

Superstar is their best work by far. That song brings on tears, smiles, sadness and chills.

We actually sang it as a graduation song in the 70s.
