you are a great asset to everyone who makes beats with the sp and with production as a whole. your videos have helped me an insane amount and i wouldnty be able to work as smoothly as i can , thank you for that. keep it up and stay positive. if mediums can talk to the dead, imagine what a large could do.
hey i’m an OG sp user- got my first one in 1999, now i’ve been learning the 404 mkii, and i have been enjoying your videos. thanks for putting the time in, i learn something new every video! thanks G!
Sorry you're having a rough time, man. Don't have a joke unfortunately, but thank you for all your help with this channel. I've learned so much in the past year from your videos, and have become a better beat maker for it. Cheers x
Keep it up! Just got the new Sp404 MK2 from the SX and been watching your videos for years. Appreciate everything you are doing man. Enjoy music and enjoy life, you’re the man!
Hey bro your channel is wealth of knowledge and I appreciate all of the videos you put out for all of us. I seriously can't thank you enough for all the tutorials you've made that have helped me really learn how to use my SP. We've never met and probably will never ever meet, but I think you're a super talented and kind hearted dude and you should be proud of what you've accomplished. We all have our bad days, but it is my hope that you will find inner peace and happiness as you navigate whatever it is that is troubling you. Take care bro. Ok, I got a corny dad joke for you: Why are pirates called pirates? They just ARRRR!!!
The method I use is more convoluted but I end up with stems for all the patterns on a beat. 1. I create the beat and Patterns 2. Go Pattern by pattern mutting all sounds but one and resample the pattern with that sound (stem) to a pad. Repeat this step for every sound that you want a stem from, I usually do a single stem for all the drums together for instance. And then again for every pattern. 3, Now I got all stems of each pattern separated in different pads. Export that pads to sd card.
Thank you so much for your videos, I found such an amazing community here, with feedback, ideas, and motivation. Almost a year ago I was going through a rough patch, and remember one of the last nights of those events, laying on my bed using the Sx and the nostalgia and pain to create. My girlfriend convinced and helped me to get the mkii, after that period, I was so depressed and music making has always helped me, and your channel has always been of so much help to learn and get inspired
Hey man. Hope you're doing good. I don't have any decent jokes for you but wish you the best. Been watching your videos for a couple months now. Love your content. Thank you for all you do. Stay strong, bro.
You really do a great job of passing on the tricks to truly finesse this machine . Always glad when I see there’s a new video up 💯 keep killin it bro 🤜
I watch all of tour vids and they are really helpful, you have made the sp404mk2 make sense for me and I’m now making lots of music with it ! Thank you!
Not great at jokes but just wanted to say thanks for everything you are doing. I've learned so much about beat making from you. You are the reason I have am mk2 and it is my favourite machine (also have po133 and mpc2000xl). It's great that you are living up to the old hip hop philosophy of 'each on teach one'. Thanks for all you do
That's actually worked for me a lot in the past. Sometimes the mind just needs a rest and time to realign itself. I am sorting out things slowly. Thank you ma guy!
Hey dude, I hope you realize that you are the preeminent SP Master Guru... Anytime I have an issue or I'm looking for a new approach this is the first place I come to. You are the person I and so many others get the solution from. So, what ever it is that has you down, approach it like YOU would, and everything will work out. ♥️✌️🤜
Sending positive vibes! I’ve just seen that the windows/ mac app for the MK2 seems to have the ability to export midifiles. with this and the sample export it should be able to export midi and samples to a DAW and have the whole beat there in the same way as in the mk2. Haven’t tried it yet, I hope it works.
I know how you're feeling Beat Brother... Things going from sugar to shit with me too. Chin up... Things will get better for us all. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger and you're still blogging and I'm here commenting so we're already kickin ass! Be easy Brother!
Nice bro. I've had a few good (or maybe bad!) nights on whiskey recently 😂 I'll have to visit the states one day and do an SPVIDZ tour. I'm based in the UK
@@spvidz hell yeah! Well by then I should be set up and booking at a venue as well The arcade venue is renovating but like the coolest spot in kansas I work with a few musicians in the uk, one in manchester and one in Somerset (yall have two very different accents in those two spots haha)
The process I am trying now is to record, 4 or 8 bar loops on patterns, then muting all but one element of the beat and resampling every "track" on a pad, and then exporting to sd card. maybe it will be faster to just record directly to a daw, but i love being as far as possible from the computer, some tiemes i ust load those loops to the mpc and work further on the beat there.
My method: 1. Do the instrumental entirely on the mkII with a combination of resampling, ptn mode, ptn chain, resampling FX, etc. 2. Export the final instrumental sample to the SD card and move that into my DAW. 3. Chop vocals and resample FX on the mkII. 4. Perform / record the vocal samples into the DAW. 5. Mix from there! I do this to minimize A/D conversions, and because I like 303/404 compression on the instrumental, but not the vocal
I like your videos on the SP404-MK2 - I am not a Hip Hop guy at all and would normaly move on, but I do think you do a great job on these videos - so please keep it up - I'll watch them ;-)
Hey, really appreciated that video! was waiting to find a quick overview how to finish from samples/patterns to a full beat. My favorite joke: why is the giraffe‘s neck so long? because the head is so high up.
Hope things have made a turn for the better since the uplod! Love this video!!! Thanks for the explanation. How do I export samples to sd card with the overall effect from bus 3 and 4 included? Every time I use this method, those effects are not processed and not included when I export the sample to the sd card. thanks!
Thanks bro! You'd have to resample them if you want to export them with those MFX. A lot of the time I just record them out instead, for example straight into Ableton. Saves a lot of time and tedium!
Heyo. I'm a new SP user, I bought it mainly to DJ finished tracks live, but your great videos inspire me to make music from scratch with it as well. Thank you. How do you make a tissue dance? Put a little boogie in it.
Bro you wouldn't even believe this but last night I had a dream that my friends and I went to your house and we brought you gifts like sweatshirts and stickers. You were flattered but also very surprised that we showed up at your house with so much stuff. Also your parents were Russian and you had to explain to them (in Russian) that we weren't going to live there. On god I'm not making this up. As a bonus your basement was DOPE. Anyway man, feel better! Your videos are like an encyclopedia for this SP stuff. I bought the MK2 because of you and it has made my creativity FLOURISH. I'm also a fan of the last method in this video. The MK2 and Garageband is such a fun combo. By the way I'm having a really hard time buying a pair of headphones, just out of curiosity what kind of headphones do you use?
Man that’s wild hahah! Dreams can be so crazy. I use audio technical M50x. They are relatively affordable but solid and you can replace the ear pads which I have had to do already but it was super easy. I have suede pads now amzn.to/3IXfvFY
@@spvidz in retrospect it was probably because I was watching your videos and making beats before I went to bed😂 I've heard really good reviews about those headphones I think I'll have to check them out! Thanks for the recommendation and keep your head up bro! ✌
I really appreciate your content as someone who is curious about the 404. One question about the second method of sampling everything into one single pad/sample, which I'd use when sketching out an idea that I want to quickly share with a friend: you say that you can sample into a pad on the 404 regardless of how you play, but you didn't mention external midi. Can I have e.g. the Syntakt control the 404 via midi, along with midi transport, program change messages and/or midi notes for playing the pads while the 404 patiently records that entire jam until I hit Rec again (or however you stop a recording on the 404)? Or will the recording get thrown off by stuff like program change messages or the fact that the actual start of the resampling is triggered from an external instrument via midi? The use case here is: I make songs with the Syntakt primarily, and I only need samples for something like 10-20% of my songs. I currently have the Digitakt for that, which I feel may be a bit overkill because it's 50% a sequencer that I don't really need, and 50% a fairly simple sampler (mono, few effects, etc). So, I'm thinking of switching to the 404 instead. Then I'd get access to much more interesting effects, stereo sampling and lots more - and, the ability to easily record a jam directly to a wave file without having to hook things up to the computer. So, I'd connect the outputs of the Syntakt to the inputs of the 404, do a pad/sampling recording, hit Play on the Syntakt and jam through an entire song, which both plays the Syntakt itself, and triggers pads on the 404 - all recorded into the 404 on a new pad. Big thanks in advance for your help. Keep up the great work in front of the camera!
9:41 would it be possible (using a method like this) to record each sound to a separate ableton track? So first lets say live perform the drums in to one track, then make a new track and live perform let’s say vocal samples over the drums, but on a separate track on ableton?
yes you can do that. There has also been an update now where you can essentially 'stem out' your patterns which makes it a lot easier transfering to a DAW
Dude! So sorry to hear it’s a rough time atm! Please know all the positive stuff people are saying about you is totally true - you’re a massively talented guy & I wish you strength and positivity getting through all the bs. That said, A JOKE (HE SAID HE NEEDS JOKES PEOPLE! GIVE THIS MAN JOKES IMMEDIATELY!) A kid walking in on his parents being intimate? Norm Macdonald’s Dirty Johnny story? Talking dog for sale? Husband & wife eating at a table? If you want a distraction hmu & we’ll connect. ✌
Seriously, I need your videos to make sense of the mk ii as it is my first sp. and my intro to Lo-fi… if you are looking for a challenge might you consider taking up the 707 as your alternate instrument? I am sure I would watch it all…. I turned 60 and bought both these machines and can now produce stuff even worse than my guitar playing with a Roland guitar synth (I suck at guitar as I am left handed and play right handed plus - I cringe at loud noises because my first ‘guitar/practise’ amp combo was Strat/Roland JC120 which failed to distort until the building foundation harmonics were excited; my baby children started to mutate and my wife left me and took the mutants)
hi! quick question! i pitched up my sample on the sp404 but then when i exported the sample and opened it up on my computer the sample hadnt changed it was the original pitch instead of the changed one. do you know how to fix this?
Hopefully you’re able to turn your recent struggles into some dope beats. Maybe write some feelings down and speak/sing them into the 404 and edit them to be killer samples on a beat?! As for a joke, how about the US government? That’s probably the biggest joke I’ve ever known. Lol
Thanks man yeah things are getting much better since this vid but I really appreciate the comment. And as someone from the UK don't worry, our government is also a complete shambles 😂😭
1a) live perform oldschool - I like this the best, just press buttons like sp-404sx. I always saw the SP like a musical instrument. 1b) live perform patterns - pattern mode seems too complicated. also, imagine you just use patterns to chain everything. you just sit there as the beat plays? no fun. 2) sample down - I don't find this too important as I could just record 1a into a field recorder or computer or whatnot. 3) finish externally - the sheer complexity of it all will make songs tedious to create and will result in a lack of motivation. at least for me.
The beauty of things like this is that there are so many different approaches. Like you mentioned in your last point, certain things can be motivation killers for some people, others not. Finding the workflow that works best for you is key 🙌
okay so its a guys first night in jail and he hears everyone after-hours yelling numbers and then laughing. "13!" and an uproar emerges from all cells. "64!" and people are snort laughing and crying, all around. He asks his bunk-mate, "what gives with all the numbers?" The mate says "...everyone here says the same jokes so much that we just decided to number them to make it simpler, go on give it a try!" So the new guy shrugs and yells "42!".... and to be only met with crickets and sniffles. New guys says' "hey what gives...?" and his bunk mates response is "well some people can tell a joke, some people can't"
Joke, eh, running around bali trying to get my record in/record via phone sorted, to let any backpackers & locals I meet load up from their pool, and anyone can jam it out at bar etc. ;)

The use case here is: I make songs with the Syntakt primarily, and I only need samples for something like 10-20% of my songs. So, I'd connect the outputs of the Syntakt to the inputs of the 404, do a pad/sampling recording, hit Play on the Syntakt and jam through an entire song, which both plays the Syntakt itself, and triggers pads on the 404 - all recorded into the 404 on a new pad.

Glad the vids are helping you to make sense of it all! 🙏
hi! quick question! i pitched up my sample on the sp404 but then when i exported the sample and opened it up on my computer the sample hadnt changed it was the original pitch instead of the changed one. do you know how to fix this?

How do I sample down a whole pattern chain to one pad?
Too much to explain over a comment - tells you all you need to know here - static.roland.com/manuals/sp-404mk2_reference_v200/eng/37139272.html
@@spvidz thank u so much my friend
NP man, hope you get it nailed!
👊👊👊
Yeah I just record straight into a daw.
Joke: my life.
Hope that helps.
Btw great tutorial again. Peace fella
lol naa man I can never laugh at other people's misfortunes but the bluntness of that did make me laugh! Gotta keep on keeping on, its the only way!
okay so its a guys first night in jail and he hears everyone after-hours yelling numbers and then laughing. New guys says' "hey what gives...?"
and his bunk mates response is "well some people can tell a joke, some people can't"
😂
heres one for ya :D
