    One of the clearest videos about these boxes I've seen. You're an excellent teacher and you cover a broad area of issues that seem to come up with these boxes. In just a few minutes you answered a lot of lingering questions I still had after watching dozens of other demos. I wish there were more youtubers out there like you. That would save us all a lot of time. Keep making music and videos. Thanks!

      I agree. Best one I've seen. Most videos focus on how amazing it is, but then I bought one, and I must say it's a headache, because one needs to rethink the workflow, coming from several MPCs and even an SP-1200 (check out my videos 😉). This video makes me understand what the limitations are, and how to use them to my advantage. I'm about to return it and get an MPC 500, but still on the fence (my main goal is to have a battery powered box for vacations / away from studio). Take care

    Brotha MG, I bought my SP404 Friday. Found this video Saturday. Made my 1st beat (using this hardware) the same day while rewatching this video. Now, I'm 4 beats in and never looking back. Many many thanks! You saved me and others so much frustration.

    Thank You so much for sharing your insight on this machine. I just found this channel and its so valuable to hear your opinion. I picked up the SP when I heard Madvilian and Donuts in HS and I learned that machine till today. I LOVE this machine and one thing I always felt bad about was that I never track out the sounds when I make beats on the SP. I usually use pattern mode, create the beat making a couple patterns, then I play that in real time to a DAW. I perform it in real time and use the FX in the box and just dump it. I play it out like a song w its own fx and then when its dumped to a DAW I dont bother to trak it i just erase the sounds on the sp and start over just dumpin ill ass beats. How u speak on the SP and how its a tool idk brah u just helped me be proud of my style a bit more. You helped me understand a bit better why i love the SP404sx for creating musical art.

    fantastic video my dude. I've had my 404sx for a few months, but have barely used it since i'm so familiar with Live. You explained its features and limitations perfectly - editing samples was so confusing before - but you explained things clearly with examples in the context of both ableton and historical sampling, which finally made it click for me. I'll definitely check out your other vids - you're a great teacher!

  • @meanguitar
    @meanguitar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yeah the sequencer doesn't work great for loops, I record it into my korg kp3 mini or my ipad. I sample into it then I edit the samples on my computer and then load them back into the 404 so that using ableton I get all my loops perfect. Back in the 90s you didn't have the computer in the workflow so it was a real challenge to perfect beat match loops. Cheating with ableton makes it much easier, if you pre-edit your whole set in ableton and then load those matched loops every pad will be perfectly beat matched.

    - Can't mute pads
    - No metronome while resampling
    - No way to play pattern while resampling (other) pads on top

      Nah don't need SP404SX, machine just keeps pitch and does same thing dubbing track's. Get vinyl player, akia Mpc one sample in track and dub over track with drum kit. Remember akia Mpc is production machine. Load samples on MPC simple mini sd card and adapter for SD card. Put samples from free sites on card transfer to Mpc and got data. Want to go studio on standalone Do the same as SP404sx push play practice beat and then dub track add instruments. Ppl try to make it sound hard to add samples to MPC not even close. Make it sound backwards. Other issue ppl create is not saving as .wav file and save PC and turn into .mp3 and transfer to phone for playback at work. Work on your craft in spare time.

    Hey MG awesome vid. Do you do additional processing or arrangement in ableton after you've created your inital beat on the SP? I'd imagine it would be really easy to record in all your steps of the beat (e.g. chop+kick, chop+kick+snare, chop...+hihat, etc.) and then do some cool arranging in ableton. Or would you just arrange in the SP with more resampling? I could also imagine creating the arrangement in ableton, then routing it BACK to the sp to do live effects processing and routing that back into ableton for more mixing & mastering type stuff. What are your thoughts? Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
