  • We first came across this song when we did our reaction to Live Aid by Queen. "Radio Gaga" sounded like one we needed to hear in full, so we're finally getting around to this one. And the hair is not aerodynamic...I'm just sayin'!

"Metropolis"is a German film from the 1920's. It is political and led to changes in Germany in the '20's and '30's. For decades it was thought that there were no full versions of "Metropolis" in existence, but a full copy was found in Argentina. Queen still uses bits of "Metropolis" in their live shows as QAL today.

Thank you! Love this song so much... and the video is so much fun. it was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award in 1984.
Roger actually wrote the song inspired by his son's comment "Radio Ca-ca" about a bad song on the radio. Ca-ca being a child's term for... uh... poop. And after Freddie and John got at it, playing with the lyrics and harmonies, and adding that wonderful bass line, it turned into a commentary about the fact that the entertainment value of a song's video was becoming of more importance than the quality of the song itself.
And now you know why the Live Aid audience automatically started doing the overhead clap to the beat. I think it was Brian who later said that was most unexpected, given that it wasn't wholly a Queen crowd, and the band were thrilled to bits that the fans must have picked that up from watching the video.
Hope you feel better soon, Coach!

Hi guys it is Nativ. Much love from Israel.
I will put this song into it's time reference and perspective. Queen had a "no synthizyers" policy, written down on their albums right up to 1978 Jazz album. !979 saw Queen change more, with Freddie growin his new made mustashe, Queen being a more dierct shorter song band with the aim of doing more hits. Being a more edgy show band, Freddie leaving the piano more to ingage with the crowd, playing it less on songs, Queen not being this majestic rock opera show with glam rock look. They transformed. And one of the main changes was the start of integrating with times and using more keybords and more electronic sound. They had a strong hit in Another one bites the dust, one of the few Queen songs that had no guitar solo and really different approach. more synth oriented. This new approach got them some big hits, and bigger areanas, better shows, but they started losing their 1973-1977 fan that only wanted Freddie to be soft and had some lack polish on his hands, they probably thought they would get Bohemian Rhapsody and Somebody to love forever.
They had decided to do a quite different album due to the huge success of Another o.b.t.d. and actually their 1982 Hot Space album 5 songs are disco oriented. The fans booed on some of their shows, demanding the older more rock oriented materials, even though Hot space did have 5 rock songs in it, and the only thing Queen could enjoy from this big failoure of an album, which I actually like, is the 1981 hit Under Pressure with David Bowie. This song also signifies their last US hit, Freddie famously saying later, probably at 1984, that until Queen will have a hit song in the US, they won't be doing shows there anymore. Which they didn't, not while Fred was Alive. So Queen did 1 tv show live singing Under p. and quit the states comletely.
So Queen lost many fans from 1979 to 1983, and they lost the US as well. Big losses. So they had to reinvent themselves. The only way to state that We are a huge act, bigger and better than you think, is making a new headliner, a big ajdjusted to it's time (new wave era) big hit that would get you back to the top. and they managed to do it hugely through Radio Gaga. of course recreating their heavy rock sound with the semi hit song of the same The Works album Tear it up gave them a new credibility as far as their rock sound, and of course the second huge 80's hit of this album I want to break free returned them right to the top. These two songs became a great stadium show success and in 1985 Queen demonstrated it with one of their biggest arena triumphs, Rock In Rio festival performing in front of 285,000 south amrican crowd and absolutely killing it.

A lot of what's in the video is from Fritz Lang's silent movie "Metropolis" which has a varied history in itself being a lost movie at one time and over the years more bits were discovered and finally it has been completed but apparently it is in dispute as to who owns the rights to it. Freddie did the track a released single called "Love Kills" for a version of the movie which came out in the 80s, the B side is Rotswangs party by Giorgio Moroder.

We had the opportunity to see Queen + Adam Lambert last year in Los Angeles and they performed this song and everyone in the audience sang along and through the power of this video we all raised our hands and double clapped along with the song too just like the crowd did at the Live Aid concert. I also found on TH-cam "The making of Radio Ga Ga" It's a fun video to watch. I love John and Brian's hair blowing in the wind like that though! I hope your throat recovers soon. Freddie's got such a fine voice. Distinctive, yet so varied. Best I've heard at doing that. Many layers to his vocals. And John may not sing, but he did have the most varied hairstyles of the band (if you discount the time Roger tried to bleach his own hair & it turned green). But, oh dear John - why that perm? (competing with Brian? Only Brian's is natural). Silly lads. Great reaction Coach & Mrs Coach! Thanks. ps - the boiler suit folks' hand gestures (claps, raised arms, fist) caught Queen by surprise during their Live Aid set. Inspired them onward for the resulting "Magic Tour" - their final tour w/Freddie.

      DONNALEAAAAAAA!
      Hi !
Btw, I think John’s overgrown **FLOOF** perm was an attempt to disguise his receding hairline, since this was in 1984 and he kept The Floof until after Live Aid in 85. By the time they recorded the “One Vision” video later in 85, John had gotten The Floof cut off and you can see how much his hairline had receded. Later, he regrew a Lesser Floof, but started allowing his silver hairs to show at the temples (Yummy Silver Deaky)
But no matter how his hair was fixed, he was both handsome and adorable 😊

The black and white film is Metropolis which was directed by the German Film Director Fritz Langin 1927.
The film lasts over two and a half hours and is from the silent era. It's very good. The number of the cast used was quite extreme.
I have seen quite a few Fritz Lang films and his film "M" from 1931 is quite sinister in tone. This film did feature spoken dialogue.
There is one scene where the camera goes through a window of a house from the outside. How this scene was filmed, I do not know how, but it is incredible to see.
He was known to put the actors in danger for real to get as much realism as possible. Fritz Lang's contemporary and equivalent was Alfred Hitchcock.
I love the song too. It is from The Works album which is superb.

For those of us who grew up with radio (even before we had a TV my brother and I would listen to shows on the radio) We listened to Dick Tracy, Amos and Andy, The Shadow, Inner Sanctum and several others. It was so much fun and my imagination would paint vivid pictures to go along with what I was hearing. I love all the detail in this video, it really does cover how the world relied on radio for information and how it was crucial during war time so that things like brown outs and black outs could be followed. Of course it was our main source for music as well. For my 9th birthday I had begged for months for a transistor radio but they were expensive. My mother saved Green Stamps and was able to buy me one. I had a 9 o'clock bedtime on school nights but the Dodger games started at 8 so I had to go to bed before the games were over. I was a huge fan. The Dodgers had come to Los Angeles just a couple of years before that and I got bitten by the bug. I knew every player and all their stats. So radio was such a big part of my growing up as it was for the members of this band. This song is about how video had broken onto the music scene and MTv was a big deal. The song is about how they hoped that radio wouldn't go away because it really was so special to so many generations. Of course this song is like an early warning and rather prophetic, we have indeed lost radio for the most part, and it is sad. As kids, we even built our own crystal set radios. Yes the "stick" is a microphone and Roger is driving for two reasons. The drums drive the music and also Roger wrote this song so he should be the pilot. The black and white footage in this video is from a German Sci-Fimovie called Metropolis which was released in 1927. Due to time constraints of Live Aid, Queen sped up this song for that performance. They labored over fitting all 6 of their songs for that set into the alloted time of 20 minutes.

Hi folks! Ah, the 80s. The hair indeed! All cut off and moussed-and that moustache. Ugh. Oh well, we can't have everything, can we? My favourite memory of this video is that they invited the fan club (per usual for their videos. How awesome is *that* ?) to play the audience, and they got the clapping perfect, but the *band* kept screwing it up. And speaking of Live Aid, it's worth it to remember that that audience wasn't a "Queen" audience, it was an "everybody" audience. Well, for them 22 minutes, they were a Queen audience. After this, I'm going to go watch "Bohemian Rhapsody" again. Love you guys!

I prefer the live version because they always perform it at a faster pace. The studio version always seems to drag.
It's true that Roger's oldest son, Felix, at the age of 2 declared the radio to be "ca ca" which is French for "sh*t". (Felix's mother is French). The phrase stuck with Roger and he wrote a song called Radio Ca ca. The band loved it but the management declared the "Ca-ca" was not to be. So Roger begrudgingly changed it from Ca-ca to Ga-ga. (Though according to Roger, they still sang Ca-ca during the recording a few times).

@CoachCastTV My favorite Queen fun-fact of 'Radio Gaga' is that Roger and Brian had quite a spat over who was going to drive that flying car ;-) It appears, to me, that the guys with the non-aerodynamic hair ended in the back seat, lol. Take care out there, folks 🙂

One thing that I have really enjoyed about your Queen reactions has been watching Mrs Coach develop a crush on Freddie. I see it in her eyes, and her little hint of a smile when he sings, and it's the cutest thing ever. I'm quite a bit older than she is, and I developed my crush on Freddie very late in life. He's pretty much irresistible to the ladies. How could he not be? Thanks for your reactions. Y'all are great! 😊

Fabulous! Queen is truly eternal! Its an interesting look back on how the radio was relied on for news as well as music and other forms of entertainment. The lyrics refer to famous moments in history that were heard on the radio. In the lines "wars of world invaded by mars", he's referring to the infamous radio show "war of the worlds" narrated by Orson Wells and Winston Churchill's famous "finest hour" speech. I still listen to (internet) radio on occasions like live opera broadcasts for example. As others have said, the video is also mirroring the famous silent movie Metropolis, which is specifically set in a dystopian future. It also symbolizes how things in life are becoming more mechanical and meaningless, and people are becoming robotic etc. Dr. Sir Brian and Roger did a series of audio commentaries of certain songs/music videos and they did an interesting one for this song/video. th-cam.com/video/Gk-dy-nCfEI/w-d-xo.html.

Thanks for sharing that. The song is great in both versions we've heard, and they were definitely different (live vs. studio). And yeah, radio certainly isn't what it was at one time in our history.
