That was absolutely brilliant. You would be the best travel companion imaginable due to your infectious enthusiasm, joyous outlook and constant cheerfulness. It's a great privilege to share these journeys with you through your vlogs. So thanks. Your channel is going from strength to strength.
Really enjoyed your blog. So glad you got proper summer weather. The train to Wemyss Bay branches off at Port Glasgow. The other part of the line goes to Gourock. In the 70s a branch from the Wemyss Bay line was built connecting to a disused freight line which went to Greenock Container terminal . Years before that through, where the Container terminal is now, there was a station called Princes Pier. The line went through Greenock, Kilmacolm and Bridge of Weir before heading to Paisley Canal St and to the old St Enoch station in Glasgow. After the Beeching Cuts in the 60’s, the line through Canal St started at Glasgow Central and terminated in Kilmacolm until 1983 when the line closed. Seven years later the line partially reopened but only as far as Paisley Canal St. Keep up the great work
I remember the old ferries on that route. They were called Saturn, Jupiter, and Juno. My favourite one as a child was an older and bigger one called Pioneer, which supplemented the Clyde Streaker fleet. The old ferries were withdrawn in the early 2000s.
Juno should have been called Uranus to fit in with the outer planets theme!Of course Pioneer 1 was the first human made spacecraft to visit Jupiter and it's traveling across interstellar space now to pass Arcturus is about 4 million years!
Great video. Thank you. I'm older now, so I could only ever go back up the serpentine to canada hill when they install a chair lift! I used to camp up there (in a lovely couple's garden) and the view is awesome. There are koi carp in the moat too. Love your cheery smile and enthusiasm. Subscribed now.
Hi G, Excellent vlog as always, the weather was certainly kind to you that day. Another destination for my bucket list...😀 Your channel could be called G's Travels, or Travel with G... Take care, Jon B.
Lovely trip to bute some fantastic views all down that side of Scotland 🏴 definitely value for money on that trip and whot a brilliant looking station thanks G for the tour 👍🙂
You want to try Arran. Train to Ardrossan Harbour. Then jump the ferry. Try and do a few days on the island though. So much to see and stunning scenery.

Gotta love a train/ferry journey... mine is usually Glasgow to Oban then on to Barra :). Btw Rothesay is Roth-say drop the e :) Nice video going "doon the watter"
Loved this as it brings back so many good memories. Our family did this journey back in the early 60's. We crossed in the paddle steamer Waverly. Her sister ship was the Jeany Deans. My younger brother now lives in Ardberg just up from Rothesay. I keep putting off visiting him as I live in England but after seeing this I have to get up there before the winter. Best time to see Scotland is in the Autumn when all the trees turn green and gold and deep red. Thanks GLoves Trains, your a treasure 🤩
Nice one! Almost 30 years ago I used to commute on that line to IBM halt from the West End of Glasgow and I was often tempted to stay on the train to Weymss Bay - never did though! Watching your vlog has given me an idea for a short break this summer, now just need to convince my wife!
G, you brought back some very happy memories of family holidays years (To be honest Decades ago) We stayed at the caravan park up the hill directly opposite the ferry port. Don't know if it's still there or who runs it but back in the day my dad and me used to walk down the hill to have a pint or three in the station bar. It was cheaper and the beer was better plus we got in todays terms "Our steps in" Especially going back up the hill. 😉.
I've done this journey myself before and always recommend it. Wemyss Bay is one of the most beautiful stations in the UK. I think Joel Hardy made a similar video of this route not too long ago.
Thanks for the video G,another hit with me and the weather was amazing. The Castle looks awesome, just love them. Must try too do more in Scotland!!😎🚇🚇🚇🚇🇬🇧💚
Wow. What a superb trip to the Isle of Bute - you have definitely inspired me to make a trip over there one day. It is indeed Bute-iful! I don't think you could've asked for better weather, and that ferry ride across the water was stunning. Wemyss Bay Station has been on TV up here so many times that I would've recognised it even if you hadn't named it. Each one of your videos is so good, but I do think this one might just be a favourite for me!
Glad to see you had a great time in Rothesay. My Dad was born there, so I have a bit of a connection to it and the Isle of Bute. Also, congratulations on finding a working CalMac ferry! 😂 It certainly looked fancier than the ferry I took over to Bute about 20 years ago now. No fancy coffee outlet, just a sort of buffet served via a hatch serving Irn Bru and sausage rolls.
Wemyss Bay looks like an incredible station. It reminds me a tiny bit of one of the other nicest stations I've seen... if you're ever in the Netherlands have a look at the station in Haarlem, it is incredibly nicely decorated.
I was going to shout out “squishy baby!” in your honour the next time I’m at Glasgow Central after your last video. Now you’ve inspired me to finally visit Rothesay where I will also be shouting “squishy baby”but I draw the line at putting my pants on my head. Thanks for another great vid 👍
i really enjoyed watching ths im loving Wemyss Bay which looks amazing & the station looks gorgeous & the views from the ferry def looks amazing in the sunshine & im loving Rothesay & the castle brilliant vlog
There is another way you can get to Bute but it is around 85 miles from Glasgow to Colintraive and you are on the boat for around 4 minutes (410 metres) to Rhubodach on Bute lovely scenic getting there.
I stay over on the east side lovely fife, and really need to see more of our beautiful country, stayed in Coldstream borders for few years absaloute beautiful place, Rothesay bute place love to visit,
I am close to where you live, and my apathy and laziness annoy the hell out of me at times . We live in such a wonderful land, and my “bucket list” is to see it from the top of Sgurr na Stri on Skye and, especially, the “fiddler” in Coigach. I watch the you tubes and feel hellishly depressed that I very rarely pass Stirling and Perth😟
There were certainly a lot of Bute-iful sights to see in this vlog 👍 When you were running alongside the flowing water on the train between Langbank and Port Glasgow, it is usually possible to get glimpses of the railway between Dumbarton and Helensburgh on the other side of the Clyde Estuary
Well done, I've waited a long time for your visit to Wemyss Bay. Lovely day for it, best station ever?(if you ever get to Stirling - same architect but not as grand!). PS. the ladies are not really Victorian, you'll need to go in the gents to see the proper ones!
Brilliant, G! Definitely a nice area of Scotland west of Glasgow especially with a lot of hills and flowing water! In terms of ScotRail trains, I've been on the HST, 158, 170, 334 and 385. I haven't been on a 156 or a 380 yet though. Overall, really enjoyed watching!
Did Glasgow to Wemyss Bay & Rothesay two years ago. Must be one of the most beautiful stations in Britain, with that curved walkway towards the ferries. You did well capturing the beauties of Bute, as there are quite many. (tbh, i'd fully recommend going back there and staying a couple of nights. Gives you time to explore the quieter, natural beauty a bit further from the ferry port as well)
Hey new subscriber. Just to say really enjoying your channel and you definitely have a great manner for youtube. This area isnt far from me and Scotland deffo looks great when we can replace the grey skies for sunshine. All the best with the channel going forward. Cheers John.☀️🇬🇧☀️

Brilliant video G, Wemyss Bay looks beautiful, after only hearing about it from certain livestream quizz's during lockdown, I deffo wanna visit it now. Rothesay looks beautiful as well. :)
I did the same journey as a 'day trip' from Portsmouth via the sleeper each way a couple of years ago. Wonderful day out! This is going to sound a bit odd… you should have gone to the gents. That's the impressive Victorian one. You're allowed in if the attendant checks nobody is using the facilities. Mount Stuart house, further south on the island, is worth a look as are the views across to Arran from Ettrick Bay. Good cake in the cafe there. I had a honeymoon on Rothesay in the Glenburn which is the big hotel with all the steps at the front. You've even met my wife. That boat is a good deal bigger than the ones they used to have. Thought you would like that station.
Fantastic video, living in Inverness I really must get the rail sail ticket to Orkney, getting the Far North Train up to Thurso, complimentary taxi connection to Scrabster harbour, then Northlink Ferry to Stromness in Orkney where there are Stagecoach buses to the island capital of Kirkwall. You have inspired me to do it, thank you
Brilliant vlog G, James Miller who redesigned Wemyss Bay Station also redesigned Stirling Station as well but he more known for his work with Wemyss Bay than Stirling. Also never been to Wemyss Bay as well. Rothesay also looks epic as well.
Nice video! Been to Rothesay a couple of times but never by train and ferry. Would like to give it a try someday. If you're ever down south then I would recommend a trip to either Ryde or Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight with a combined train + ferry ticket from somewhere nearby like Southampton. You can even ride the Island Line through with a combined ticket!
That was absolutely brilliant. You would be the best travel companion imaginable due to your infectious enthusiasm, joyous outlook and constant cheerfulness. It's a great privilege to share these journeys with you through your vlogs. So thanks. Your channel is going from strength to strength.

Great video! I work in GLC! I wonder if you came through my barriers 😂
Haha probably! 😂
3:52 I love the way that the station names are in Scots Gaelic, which being Irish myself, I do warmly appreciate 🇮🇪☘️🏴❤️❤️❤️❤️
Oh aye - they're like that all over the country as far as I am aware, not just in the traditionally Gaelic-speaking areas.
I remember the old ferries on that route. They were called Saturn, Jupiter, and Juno. My favourite one as a child was an older and bigger one called Pioneer, which supplemented the Clyde Streaker fleet. The old ferries were withdrawn in the early 2000s.

They also done the gourock to dunoon route
Just before them there was also a Glen Sannox which actually worked!
made that same trip from Wigan in 1977 and 1979 - things have changed somewhat !
Sweet!
Such a beautiful journey! I love Scotland 🏴 All that flowing water is restorative to the soul. Thank you G! 😎
Sure is! 😀
Thank you G absolutely joyful vlog! Full of light and sea air. I so enjoy your train and travel stuff.
