I tried it! I liked it a lot! It kind of irritated me at first, because I couldn’t resource up at times, but it does even up the play. Won’t play it any other way now.
I'm not a dedicated fan of Catan like some people are, but I am astonished at how little attention this game seems to be getting online since its 2024-02-02 release in English. This game is a modern remake of one of the most popular Catan games, yet there seems to be little buzz. I have come to understand the orange D6 should be a D3, so I plan to buy a D3 or pretend that the 4-5-6 sides are 1-2-3. Thanks for publishing nearly the only video (to date) on this classic re-release.
Thanks heaps for the comment. This is the first game that I feel I should really do a follow up video. Being in Australia, I had never heard of the original but I do feel like I should have researched this better. I also believed the 1-6 die was part of the design mechanic (only 50% of the time should you get resources off dice rolls) but also I agree now in hindsight this should be a 1-3 die. Thanks again do appreciate it 👍
@@BangersProject Honestly, your explanation that 50% of the time you don't produce makes sense, and it has convinced me to try playing both ways to see which I prefer. It's pretty easy to house rule a D6 into behaving like a D3 if needed. I think official word is not released on whether it should be a D3 or D6 in the box haha. Just happy I have a copy incoming and should be able to play soon-ish!
I actually really like your variant...you should post it on the BGG forum for the game (under "Variants"). That way, others can offer feedback! Did you find the 75 minute advertised playing time to be accurate? I feel that would be right on the edge for me....if (in reality) it's more like 90 minutes then I would probably not want to play. It does actually seem to share a lot of DNA w/ the original Catan ie., rolling for resources, trading resources, the race to 10 points, multiple ways to score, special bonus achievements that potentially change hands during play, etc. Great job btw!
Heya Andrew, thanks for this comment. I have never uploaded a variant on BGG before but I do use so many other people's variants in other games. I will try and get onto this and get it uploaded thank you. For my partner and I, it's always been longer. Quickest play was 80 min but 90 minutes is pretty common sadly. It might be us though, so super keen to hear others thoughts on the length. Really great points also on those similarities 👍
@@BangersProject ok. So I’m in scenario 4! It’s a terrific way to learn the game. So hard to wrap your head around all the mechanics, but we’re getting it. And yes, it takes a long time to get your ship up to snuff! But then the missions come into play, This is a hella fun game. I think it might rank up there with some big box games. I can’t decide whether I like this more than castles of burgundy! For under $50, this games plays like one 3X the price, components are gorgeous, and it very very well themed. No doubt in my mind, like Azul, and shifting stones, it’ll hit my table a great deal. If I survive scenario 5 and 6!
I have my copy of the game now. I believe the orange die should only have 3 values: 1, 2, and 3 repeated. Your die has 6 just like mine. How did you play with it like that? Seems like an obvious error. All the cards reference only a 1, 2, or 3 from the orange die. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
No you are not wrong at all. For ages I was expecting cards to come with 4, 5 & 6 but it didn't happen. I assume the designers did this to tighten up the resources so you only get bonuses on avg 50% of the time. This could be another factor in the long length of the game.

I had never heard of Starship Catan, pretty confident it never landed in Australia. I checked out Board Game Oracle history and only a few copies ever made it here and they were sold for stupid high prices. But yeah you are spot on, I wish I had known that and mentioned that in the video. Thank you for educating me 👍

After playing both with my partner (who while not a beginner but not experienced gamer either) but she also felt Splendor Duel was more manageable for a newer player. I still very much stand by the fact that Starfarers Duel is not suited to beginners in this hobby. But really do appreciate the comments 👍
Yes I mentioned in another post that I think I need to do a follow up video. I had never heard of Starship as it never hit our shores. So I do apoligise and of course that is the proper comparison
Our first game was 3 hours with setup and learning the rules. The rules were not amazing and it took a lot of back and forth with that rulebook at the start. Subsequent games were more around the 2 hour mark. I honestly think the dice is wrong, if it was a 1-3 dice you would get a resource every round, the way it stands now it takes so long to get enough resources. We are quite competitive and potentially overthink our strategies, if you traditionally play fast, know the rules, and both players are experienced I would estimate 90 min is achievable.
@@BangersProject whoooooa, that’s excessive. And yea, I saw a post earlier today that it’s supposed to be a d3, so treat 4s as 1, 5s as 2, and 6s as 3. They’re working on a replacement fix

I also think a 1/2/3 only dice would also make more sense as it would increase the values of the boosters
