In all honestly this hunt is the most fun you can have and still be legal I believe (I wanted to say with your clothes' on but that might have been weird). To share my world and Sitka blacktail with Jim Heffelfinger after years of discussion was wonderful. The comradery between Jim and I and Marcus was perfect. Karen Petersen, my lovely bride kept us well fed with wonderful table fare. We hunted hard and enjoyed our time. Jim Heffelfinger deserves a rematch....the invite is open. I wait...
I love how genuinely excited Handsome Jim is to share the landscape he knows so well. You can just tell how he wants to point out and share all of it. That's something special.
Clearly there's some great editing, but for sure Marcus' footage is incredible. He's an artist - just a step up from the crowd. I never look for editing credits but it's always obvious who the photographers are.
Hello All. I tune in and it's my old friend Jim B. What a treat! I visited Jim & Karen in 2014 and was introduced to SE Alaska hospitality, and rain! Lots of rain. A great visit with of two really stand up folks. Looking forward to Episode 2. Best to All involved. 👍
Thanks Jim. All's well in the Greater Yellowstone Country. Let me know when you're back this way and I'll buy you lunch! Holiday Wishes to all of Randy's viewers... 🎅
Poor Marcus... rough duty, back in Alaska once again ! This should be a fine adventure to watch unfold. When I saw that roast, I was like... "Ok, what will the rest of you be eating for dinner?" I'd be headed for venison coma! What a gorgeous roast!
Well, looks like plans have changed for that whitetail currently hanging in my cooler. I'm thinking that roast recipe is a must try. Great episode, beautiful story telling and teaching once again!
I'm always confused with the thumbs down. Is their just a bunch of anti-hunting folks that thumbs down them? Like, "I'll show them, thumbs down!". Love it, keep up the great work.
Loved Rain Deer back when it came out and loved this too. Pretty much will watch anything Randy puts out and Jim Baichtal should just change his last name to Blacktail (or at least lie and say Baichtal is German for Blacktail) ;) The guy just knows deer. Love watching the few vids of him out there and hearing him on podcast. I get to chase a different type of blacktail here in Northwestern Oregon but we still chase them mostly in rather "moist" conditions and call them the grey ghosts of the forest.
You produce great content! I have have learned a great deal of knowledge from you that I apply in the field darn near every time! Keep on keepin on Randy, appreciate you
This is so cool... ready to see what happens next....never thought about doing a roast like that, have taken the shoulders of a whitetail and cured with pink salt and put it in the smoker ,a lot better than grinding it into hamburger.
I really like the recipe specifics written out. I don't like that it's 8am, just finishing morning workout, and I was looking forward to coffee. Now all I can think about is the taste of red meat and fat.

1:22 in and I just put it together that this is Jim and Jim hunting in Nirvana! This is going to be great. Like TR and Leopold, Michelangelo and DiVinci, or George Straight and ZZ Top, together at last!!
Randy - this was a great episode despite your absence. You need to get Mrs. Baichtal a yeti cooler to rest her roasts in, and Jim H. some new Sitka gear. He was sticking out like soar thumb compared to jim b in that cover. And obviously a towel is not going to hold the heat like a ridiculously overpriced cooler will...
They remind me of the coastal blacktail in northern California. I've taken 3 bucks in the past near Mendocino, CA, probably averaged 110 lbs for a 6 point (eastern 6 point) buck.
As I have understood it, Blacktail are a hybrid of Columbian Whitetail (What Lewis and Clark mostly saw...and probably as good as extinct, though populations certainly still exist...for now) and Mule Deer. Sitka are a sub-species by isolation of that hybrid. Please, correct me if I'm wrong! Edit: and the rate we are going with habitat change, won't be long til all we have is Eastern Whitetail.
Here's an article I wrote about where Mule Deer come from ("when a deer father loves a deer mother very much........") www.deernut.com/Documents/MDF%20The%20Origin%20of%20Mule%20Deer%20JanFeb%202016.pdf
Howa in .308. I'm Old School. :) Howa is a sponsor and that was the first time I held one. No BS, I was impressed! With the custom turret Leupold scope we just dialed 184 yards and smacked it. Second shot (in the rain) hit the lead splatter of the first. Bolt is very smooth, cerakote is durable, and if it were mine, it would have my YHM suppressor on the threaded barrel.
He was making up that buck he saw. I deal with liars on a daily basis at my practice and when the first thing after being questioned somebody responds "ah man! Now you guys are gonna think we are making it up" he most likely is making it up
Marcus in Alaska, is he really? I heard a voice that sounded like him. I've never known Marcus to be camera shy... Maybe it's Michael pretending to be Marcus. ha! ha!
Watching this. It's no wonder that deer locked up on them. Worst looking camo pattern ever for that surrounding. He almost glows. Sorry guys time to get some new camo
IMO camouflage doesn’t mean much. Maybe it’s just that I can’t afford most of it. 😆 I hunt a lot, never wear camo even bow hunting, better than average kill rate. Put on all that camo and then an orange vest over the top of it.😆
It did seem a little glossy. Not much better that’s waterproof though. It really doesn’t matter. What matters most is being still enough that you see your quarry before it sees you, and staying warm, dry and quiet. Handsome Jim could have taken that doe easily. Or was it the other Handsome Jim?
