I'm a two-at-a-time, toe-up-socks knitter and I love it. My oldest daughter learned the method when she was 12 or 13 and she had knitted several pairs in 5 years. I'm really grateful for those who come up with new ways to knit wonderful things!

Great tutorial on Judy's magic cast on. I have tried all methods and I'm happiest with double points or 9 inch circulars. I've never had 2nd sock syndrome and I'm thankful for that. I just like knitting socks, doesn't matter to me what sock I'm knitting lol I do now and then use the other methods just to do something different but I always go back to dpn's. It's my comfort zone.

Not sure what my syndrome is called. I go get the pattern and the yarn then I set it on my counter and look at how pretty it is. Been doi g that for 5 years. Not sure how long it will last. :)

Yes! I just started TAAT on DPNs. I’m tearing through my Felici collection in no time. I got 3 pr of size 10 adult socks done in 9 days! I love doing two at a time because it eggs me on to get more finished - so if I did 10 rounds on one sock then I want to stay up longer just to make sure I get 10 more rounds done on the other sock. I love two at a time.

You CAN knit two at a time socks on DPNs.
Kate Atherly used to teach the “War and Peace” (sometimes called 2 in 1 socks) class, it’s a reference to the Russian author Tolstoy’s book War and Peace. In the book, the children’s nanny (or governess or whatever) is said to knit two socks at a time, one inside the other--presumably some form of double-knitting. Interesting that double-knitting was well enough known in 1869 for Tolstoy to have included a reference to it in this book.

I used to do 2-at-a-time on 2 circular needles. Recently I learned magic loop, but I got hung up when it was time to pick up the gusset stitches. I ended up taking one sock off and finishing the gussets on separate needles. Then I put both socks back on one needle and finished with magic loop.

Me too, but now I'm stuck at the heel (cuff down) and am not sure what steps to take. Most of the tutorials use Magic Loop for 2 at a time; Verypink.com uses two circulars, but she uses matching needles, so I can't tell which one she's picked up for which part of the sock! :(

    • @Pluviophile218
      @Pluviophile218 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree! I can't get the magic loop to work for me, but 2aat on 2 circs does, and I do all my knitting in the round on 2 circulars.
This is a very clear explanation, so I might give this a try! Thanks!
The cast on looks pretty easy, but my problem with 2aat comes at the dreaded turning of the heel. I had it and I made about 4 pairs of socks then I left sock-land for a while to learn Fair Isle using both hands, the when I went back to 2aat on 2 circs I lost my mojo.

Because I have to do a lot of calf shaping to make my socks fit, knitting two-at-a-time socks makes so much sense! To help wrap my head around yarn management, I used the Knitting Expats tutorial to fill in the gaps. I also use her German Short Row heel pattern, so the socks stay right on the magic loop the entire time.

I'm a pretty new knitter, going on 3 years a crochet and just learned to knit this year. I only have 2 straight needles and one cable, no DPNs or anything. But one of my favorite things for when I get to make an actual sock I like look knitting, I'm still learning it though just like normal knitting. I dont normally mind when making socks so far since I'm more a process crafter when I loom knit. When I normal knit or crochet I'm at least 50% product crafter.

I have always wanted to learn two at a time sock knitting, but even with all the books, couldn't wrap my head around it (plus didn't have any brains left because there were large kids in the house! they're now gone and my smartness has returned). I JUST learned how to do it!! a new yarn shop opened in town, and someone showed me. so easy :((( I'm off and running BUT I STILL LOVED THIS VIDEO. very clear, fun to listen to sane women's voices! going to look for more fun vids of yours.

I'm a two at a time on twin circs. Magic loop is something I only do it I absolutely have to, and sock knitting isn't in that category.
"Two at a time" is brilliant if you want to ensure the socks are identical. It's great with self-striping yarn. You can make micro-adjustments to your gauge to make sure the socks match.
When I was knitting a toy sheep, the legs were made "four at a time".

I have played around with different methods and if I do two at a time, I like to do them concurrently on DPN’s. This way I can take one on the go in my bag and it’s not so bulky and when I get home, I work on the other one. I’ve only don’t that once, but by far it was my fasted pair knitted. I don’t have second sock syndrome (unless I don’t like the way the first one knitted up) so I still enjoy one at a time.

When I'm making adult socks, I do two socks concurrently on two separate 9" circs. LOVE that. Right NOW, I'm making a pair of socks for my 5 y/o granddaughter, so, obviously, that's not gonna work!! I'm doing it OAAT on my longer circ, and just dreading the second sock (since I really don't care for magic looping socks. Have I mentioned 9" sock circs RULE?). I WISH I had seen this before I got the entire toe of the first sock finished, because this seems like a perfect opportunity to learn TAAT! DRAT! Gonna have to finish this pair of socks for the Grandie, and do a SECOND pair of socks, just so I can figure it out on such tiny socks!!
Thanks for the great video and tutorial, ladies!

I use to have the second sock syndrome. Also, I hate the Kitchener stitch . You can teach an old dog new tricks. I taught myself Magic Loop, Continental, and Portuguese knitting. All of my 🧦 are made Toe up this way I can try it on to know where to place the heel. Never have to worry about running out of yarn for the toe.

Two at a time on two circulars works beautifully too, 32 or 40 inch cords as well.

I only knit 2aat socks that is how I learned to knit them...I do the fleegle heel so they can stay on the needles I have done heel flap and gusset but have to take one off then do the heel and then put back on one. Plus doing 2aat I don’t have to count rows they are always even

I love magic loop 2 at a time since I never got 2 socks to look alike if I used dpns. One might be longer or looser. I think the days between changed my mood or I lost the paper that told me how many rows I did. Now I get both looking alike and finished the same day.

I learned to knit because I wanted to knit socks. Pair after pair I would suffer SSS. I stopped for a while and moved on to other knitty things until I found out about the magic loop method. Unless it's a Christmas stocking, I won't be going back to DPNs for sock knitting.

I absolutely have second sock syndrome! I’ve been hesitant to do 2AAT, but I should just jump in!

Love two-at-a-time, toe-up (even though I don't mind doing the kitchener stitch).

I'm one of those lucky people that doesn't have 2nd sock syndrome. I love to knit socks, and it doesn't matter to me whether I'm working on the first sock or the 2nd sock. To me it's just knitting. I prefer to make vanilla socks, but even if I'm not I still don't mind making the 2nd sock. I always have socks on my needles. It's my car knitting, it's my mindless knitting. I find that my fingers get sore working on other projects, so I just switch to my socks when that happens. I have one pair of socks that I'm doing 2 at a time because I'm using a double stranded sock blank. I dislike magic loop because I get pretty bad laddering, so I'm actually using 2 9-inch circs (after frogging everything I had done on magic loop) and just working the same number of rows on each sock. I'm not thrilled with it, but I just can't manage magic loop.

Kathy Goodman I make them using 2 needles at the same time. One gas a 24 inch cord, the other a 16. It’s from a book called Knitting Circles Around Socks. The only hassle is keeping the 2 balls of yarn untangled. I’ve never tried magic loop.

I 100% agree. Magic loop isn't for me, but I never have an issue knitting the second sock. I use 9" inch circulars as well because it's the only way I can avoid laddering. Even DPNs were giving me issues at first (not so much now).
For your double knit sock blank, I hear that you could unravel that and cake them up separately if you wanted to knit them one at a time. Not sure if that's true or not, but that's what someone at my local yarn store said.

I do my socks 'in tandem'....the toe of one, the toe of the other etc. [I've got extra needles.] They are finished at the same time! Thanks....

Well, I also like to knit two socks at a time using two circular needles BUT I like both cast-on shown...have only knit top down socks so I think it's time for Judy's Magic Cast-on...so much to learn in knitting and so little time!!!

I always knit two at a time, toe up socks with a short row heel (either German short rows or fish lips kiss heel (best $1 I’ve ever spent!).

I am just learning to make socks. I tried the manic loop, my yarn was so thin, I had a hard time doing magic loop, plus I thought since I’ve never knitted socks before, I should try one at a time. Still trying to figure it iut👍
