Setting up a Carolina Coop

  • We ordered our Carolina Coop (18x6) earlier this year and received it this week. It took us 4 days to put it together (my wife actually did most of the work) and most of it was pretty straight forward. The roof was a little challenging and i'm not sure would be doable for most people, but i could be wrong. Anyways, it's beautiful and fancy as all hell.

    I just bought a completely different set up coop from Carolina Coops but they sent me the directions for this coop here. I'm looking forward to figuring out how to complete the build with incomplete instructions. I'm glad your coop is holding up, I at least get that to look forward to.

      Sorry for the delay in responding, but i hope you managed to put the coop together without issue! Contacting Carolina Coop directly may have helped. they could send you a PDF on their instructions.

      @@AlainGrandemange No worries I acutally figured it out. They only had one set of directions most of which didn't pertain to my coop. I got everything built though it just took me longer than it should've.

    Great job on putting the coop and run together. Good teamwork! I used to have chickens for years and I will again after our new home is built. I want a Carolina Coop this time, about the same size as yours...It's the American Coop model. I think I will have them put it together for us. Just curious how has it been going since you set it up? Any issues? I'm sure your girls are laying by now. Enjoy the fresh eggs and take care. Justine in FL.

      Hi Justine. The coop has been awesome. it's holding up really well and there are zero issues with it. my girls are all laying now so we've got plenty of eggs to give away to our neighbors. I'll be posting a follow up video shortly giving an update on what works well and some of the additions we've made.

    Beautiful design. I love them. Mine isn't as pretty (No doug fir or cnc) but $600 w/a 4x10 footprint before lumber went CRAZY.. I wish it was the size of yours but didn't have the room. CC's are DEFINITLY a nice addition to a back yard! Great JOB!

      Thanks! Carolina Coops are fantastic, but not for everyone. Plenty of people raise healthy and happy chickens in makeshift or homemade coops. The key is to love your girls, feed them well, and study up on chicken raising best practices.

    Instead of the bedding we used sand which acts like kitty litter and doesn’t smell as bad. Love your coop. I did our coop with good material and the run out of pallet wood( base was PT) with 1/4” Hardware cloth all around for the rodents. Was your wood all cedar?

    • @AlainGrandemange
      @AlainGrandemange  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Luis. i've heard of people using sand in the bedding. We've decided on hemp and so far so good. no cleaning out any poop, just need to stir it about twice a week.i like that the hemp will just go into our compost heap once a year, which will then feed our garden. As for the type of wood used, i'm not quite sure what Carolina Coop shipped with but it's definitely not cedar.

    I am curious, how much did this cost you if you don’t mind because we are thinking about getting one like yours

    • @AlainGrandemange
      @AlainGrandemange  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nancy. It's definitely not cheap, but Carolina Coop is very open about their prices on their website and why they believe the cost is fair given the quality. We bought the coop over a year ago so i can't remember the exact cost, but it was about $7k (i think), but again if you go to Carolina Coop's website, their prices are there (the coop we have is 6x18) and their customer service is excellent if you have any questions.

    Do you have any problems with your standard chickens getting along with the silkies?

    • @AlainGrandemange
      @AlainGrandemange  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Nope. We were initially concerned about the silkie and the bantam and after placing the order i started second guessing myself and reached out to My Pet Chicken for their advice. Turns out that the silkie and bantam are treated better by the bigger girls than other girls. I think if they are all raised as day old chicks at the same time in the same manner, they will all get along. The Silkie (Andie) is my star. i love her so much and she overflows with personality. hope that helps!

    Just the exact model I want to purchase! Scary truck unload indeed. Your wife is amazing. There are some big pieces of lumber and she was strong enough to work with it, huzzah! I’m sure she appreciated your assistance with the 2 bags of fluffy litter, lol 😝. It is obvious I will need to have the company install the whole structure here as that work is way over my pay grade! (Luckily, I’m an hour’s drive from them). Did you have to wait long for delivery?

    • @AlainGrandemange
      @AlainGrandemange  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Joan. The delivery did take a long time unfortunately. We ordered the coop in January of 21 and it was only delivered in August of 21. The company's products are in high demand and they had a massive backlog. We knew when we ordered it so it wasn't a surprise. If we used them to instal it, it would have probably been done much faster.

    What did you use for a base? Nice work.

    • @AlainGrandemange
      @AlainGrandemange  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Luke. The coop and run frame rest on a ground-contact pressure treated frame (eight 4x4, 6' long). i just dug the trenches for the frame, put some sand at the bottom of the tenches and the lumber went on top. we then built the coop on that frame. we didn't remove any grass onside or change the ground. eventually the grass died or got eaten by the chickens and now it's just soil. The bedding for the coop is Hemp purchased through Carolina Coop. my followup video shows what the coop looked like 6 months after being built. hope that helps.

      @@AlainGrandemange Hi, thanks for your video! I am expecting my CC in a few weeks, and I am putting it together myself, with the help of my son... And probably an SOS to my neighbors!! My biggest concern (at the moment) is getting my ground level and the base prepared. What did you use to connect the base of the coop/run to the "base" you dug/prepared? Do you have any more details on that? Also, did you paint your coop or just let it weather?

    • @AlainGrandemange
      @AlainGrandemange  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cmebeth Hi. We built the base from 4x4s (8 of them to fit our 18x6 coop). the base needs to be a specific type that can handle ground contact but not be toxic. i honestly can't remember the exact type though. The fasteners are standard plates used in construction to hold these together. and the screws were exterior grade structural strong-drive SD connector screws. i didn't attach the base to the coop. the coop is heavy enough, there's no need and that would increase the chances of the wood cracking or splintering. hope this helps!

      Hi! i don't have the manual anymore but definitely a drill for screwing and a hammer. We bought a nail gun to put up the panels, but in theory it's not necessary... it's just a lot of hammering and we have full-time jobs :) Hope that helps.

      @@AlainGrandemange Thanks..I was thinking of getting a staple gun for the mesh and the predator skirting..I have a brad nailer with the little compressor..but I don't know anything about tools..not really. I was wondering if I could just hook up a stapler to the compressor but overthinking about compatability of adding other pnumatic components..I'm probably just making something simple very complicated 🤣
      My Carolina coop will be delivered the week of October 3rd..so I'm just trying to get prepared. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question 🙂

    • @AlainGrandemange
      @AlainGrandemange  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Immichou it's better to over-prepare for this in my opinion. it's a big investment. A staple gun probably won't do what you'll need it to do. The mesh is framed in, not just staples in. what i mean is that the hardware cloth is sandwiched in between the frame of the coop and slats of wood that hold it in place. staples won't be long enough. I'm not great with tools either, but luckily we have a Home Depot and Lowes within a mile. A good drill and a nail gun will be your friends (but the nail gun is optional).

      Hi Vernon. I'm not sure what you're asking/saying but every town in MA ((where we live) has different rules about chickens. We made sure to check with the town and get the required license and ensure the coop was properly located in our yard (the rules are very very specific) and food is properly stored. The inspector loved our setup and apparently it's one of the nicer ones he's seen. Always follow local rules to avoid heartbreak.
