BEST Chicken Coop & Run Tour

- Let’s take a tour of the chicken coop and run that my husband built. We did not use any building plans. He just thought through it as he built it, but he says he’s not good at carpentry! 🔨 We used plywood, pressure-treated lumber, and hardware cloth. Almost everything is painted, and we used a special type of paint on the plywood underneath the deep bedding area to protect the wood from moisture. Our deep bedding is hemp. Straw seems to attract bugs. We found all our latches and pulls from our local home store. #coop #homesteadchickens #bantams #urbanchickens #farmfresheggs #happiness #homesteadchickens #babychickens

After having a chicken coop and a run for a while, the best advice I can give anyone starting out, is no matter what, if possible, build a coop and a run that is 2 feet taller than yourself. Your back will thank you later and it’s just so much easier than stooping down every time you have to go in the run. This is a fantastic coop and run!
Absolutely stunning
Have you thought of or done this, rotating the roosters, I feel sorry for Robin.
2 things. First..Just gorgeous. Second… on behalf of all guys, we hate your husband for setting this very high standard. 😂
LOL! A work friend told her husband about my coop, and he felt the same.
@@CluckinAround 😂
Props to your husband - he did a great job on that coop!!
Thank you!
He most definitely needs to sell plans for this. It’s so creative and perfect!
Thank you.
I love the coop. Its always great to see how others made theirs. Ill be done with mine soon and by then, my girls will be about ready to go outside.
Thanks!
Wow
We love it!
Amazing. Better than my own house. With such luxury those eggs better taste good!
You know they do taste EXTRA good. Might get some people addicted!
Very nice. I love the run.
Thanks 👍
Hubby did an amazing job!
What a beautiful and perfect coop and run! Good job! Lucky you -- and hens and roos.

Very nice job on the coop and the run .... tell her husband he needs to sell those plans

Does robin always stays out? Is that fair for him? Alone always? Or do they take turns being out of the run. And do the chickens ever get out of the run and roam around?
Yes, we made a whole chicken yard. They all love it.
Room for more chickens
I’d love that.
Robin looks lonely
Did your husband build that from scratch? I just messin with you as a fellow Texan ;) Great setup!
Yes! He did not use any plans.
Said it just a couple times 😜
Great coop! About how much did you spend for materials?
Thank you. With the cost of lumber it was about 2k. We were going to buy a shed, but we knew we would still have to modify. This is what we decided on.
Impressive. I’ve heard good things about the Carolina Coup deep bedding. The longevity of the bedding. Do you ever switch out Batman with Robin? The armadillo scared me for a minute lol.
Robin is not nice to the girls and Batman is the sweetest! That’s funny you noticed the armadillo decoration.
I love your solar lights where did you get them?
The big solar lights on the front of the coop I got from tractor supply
@@CluckinAround ok thank you.
What is on the run floor for litter? So super clean!!
We use hemp bedding.
How often do you clean out the hemp? Am I correct that you remove that board to clean it out? Looks great.
Yes I do! Once a year. I just cleaned it out and shared information in my recent spring break video.
What type sand do you have in the chicken run and on rainy days how wet does it get?
We have dirt that we got from a feed store, and we got a trailer load. The run is completely covered, so it stays dry in the run.
How do you keep the run dirt so soft? My hens keep packing the dirt down.
My girls scratch at it all the time. They are even able to take dust baths.
Hi! How big is the coop itself? I need a coop large enough to store supplies, like you did, but I don’t want an overly large building in my backyard. So I’m trying to determine the minimum size. I’m only planning to have around 6 hens.
8X10 and we gave my side enough space for a 24" wide door to fully open. I can use the space under the chicken area for large totes of feed, treats, and other supplies.
@@CluckinAround thank you! This is very helpful.
Is it 8 feet wide and 10 feet deep? So 2 feet for entry and 8 feet for the coop area?
@CluckinAround how far apart are the roost bars from each other and how far are the roost bars away from the walls?
I would say they are a foot apart. We have two bars.
So, they go to the high roosts? No heavy meat chickens?
No meat birds here.
Poor Robin. Did you find him a flock?
He’s doing great
What do you have in your chicken run on the ground? Is that all Pete moss?
It is a mix moss, top soil, chicken stuff, and feed lol.
@@CluckinAround thank you. It’s a beautiful beautiful coop.❤️🙏
Size wise how big is it?
The coop is about 10x12 and the run I’m unsure.
So your silkie is exposed to predators.
He has a safe place to be during the day and a coop at night. My birds get to have time in the chicken yard.
Does your husband have plans for this coop?
I believe after a couple of years of searching, this is the one!!!
No, I wish he did. Basically, he would do some work and stand back and think before starting again lol.
So did your husband make this coop from scratch?
Yes
😢😢 can I borrow your husband, tools, and money probably too...
Our coop is a hot mess.. we are not diy folks.
I told him he should start a business.
@@CluckinAround Cool Coops for the Needy. Lol
Poor Robin
You should give him away to a loving family.
He’s doing great.
Poor Robin. He looks so forlorn out there. I have 4 roosters myself. 2 are separated away from the main flock, in the bachelor pad. 2 with the hens but 1 of them has to be caged because he's the beta male, even though hubby named him Rockstar (he's a blue/silver ameraucana, with long black 'mane' that looks like the long hair of 90s rock stars'). He either bullies the hens - or more like hurriedly 'does' thing before the alpha male, Spid, catches him, or gets bullied by Spid. As a result, the hens do not like him because he's rough and never does courting dance like Spid does. Just whambam no thank you, Ma'am. So sadly, I have to cage him. But the cage are large enough so he's still free to move around and it's in the middle of the run area.
Robin has access to the chicken yard, but has his own coop. He is not nice to the girls, and they do not like it. He's such a sweet boy when he isn't hurting the girls. Take a look at my shorts, and you will see his night time routine. He is so funny!
