Heard this piece for the first time today, though I've been a fan of the band for years. I was flabbergasted. This is some tricky shit--yet funky. Did some Wikipedia research: the piece was written by the drummer, Sput Searight, which helps explain the devilish rhythms, accents and displacements. Love it to death, eight years late to the party.
Great comment!! So "in to it..."
This song is soooooooooooo underrated!! Most people I talk to don't like this song because they can't follow the beginning. This song is Brilliant!!!
Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion. They just happened to be wrong this time.
I actually had to listen a few times then I started enjoying it
Lol it’s so simple it’s only 3 measures of 7 and then a measure of 5 and then a measure of 6 (or one measure of 11 if it suits ur fancy)
👌😉
That's interesting. I personally love songs with odd time signatures. Might be a musician thing but I sometimes sit there and try to figure out the different counts happening. Love it!
Sense of timing is just out of this world
It always irks me just a bit in Snarky Puppy's live videos that, at the
end, the audience seems only mildly impressed, giving a polite applause and nodding their heads. I wonder if they're told to do that, because I know I would be flipping out in there if nobody told me otherwise.
These recordings were for an album so they were probably told to stay quiet until 3 or 4 seconds after the song ends, otherwise you'd have people clapping halfway through like they did in Shofukan before the outro part. The sound spills through the mics in the studio and then ends up on the recording
@@seanmccannwildcamping dude that clapping in Shofukan was because the solo's just ended
Shaun Martin’s diminished lick at 2:12 is insane
The first section is three bars of 7/8 then one bar of 11/8, although if you count the whole thing in 4/4 (like Michael does) then it works also (3x7+11=32).
samcooke343 Exactly. It's 4/4 but the permutation/syncopation makes it seem odd-time.
MaintainTheFrogsBite I only can identify the one, lol, but I count 4/4 when I find the one lol
+MaintainTheFrogsBite the phrasing is 7/8 so the sheet music will read 3 measures of 7/8 on bar of 11/8
and
I need to go back and relearn how to read music. I play by ear more so than read...
I started listening to this band last year, and this is still, without question, my favorite song from them!
THAT MOOG SOLO!!! WOW!!!
People always just use the Phatty for bass lines. Saul took it on a whole 'nother level!
2:14-2:18, EPIC FINGER LEAP!
How can anyone seriously thumbs down this... just the jealous folk? New fav band!
There's more than bent nails in this one:-)
I love this band to bits!!! Michael is a monster musician and should stand proud among the Metheny's, Weckl's, Zawinul's and Coreas before him.
What I find really impressive about this is I don't see a single chart. Usually when you get bands of this size especially with a full horn section, there are bound to be charts. Not here though.... Kudos.
oh thats because its all improvisation
J Cer No, it is not ALL improvisation. they are all playing Unison lines together. How can it be improvisation when you have a group of people playing the same lines? those parts are preconceived and possibly even pre charted and then memorized.

In an interview, M. League said that he gives everyone an audio file with all parts so that everyone learns all parts throughout the song; admittedly the musicians are consumate artists, so doing that is not small feat, but they have to have the entire tune memorized before it records.
Man that horn line is killin.
Had to be still at the recording, mics, cords everywhere at the studio. I went on the last day of this recording. Believe, it was hard to stay still but I got a lot of yelps out.
so gnarly. I have no idea how anyone got so many crazy talented musicians in one room, but props.
as far as I can tell, the first bars are alternated 7/8 and 9/8. awesome composition and great technique in order to play this so tightly! all pf this while smiling and laughing at each other. marvelous.
If someone needs a drum transcription of this song - check it out on my channel! Thanks.
Shaun my man this is killer. You'll be missed
Best Jazz Music. So Well put together. Especially when the Nails in the second half of Music.
I love how their tracks shape shift, metamorphosizing into a totally different groove along the same path. They remind me of groups like Groove Collective and New Cool Collective.
honestly you guys are my favorite band... im sitting here writing a research paper and im playing it and it just hit me after like 6 months of listening to this song how great it actually is...
The funkiest thing this planet has to offer.
SP don't always do 4/4 but when they do, they don't.
Just can't beat hearing live jazz music and the band, just kicks ass eveytime.
🗣SNARKY PUPPY anNEM!! 🤣😂
Blessings From Texas 🤠
This is so awesome. I missed their show in Denmark last year but this year i have TICKETS.
+Ijohannesen I'm gonna see them in Amager Bio as well, can't wait!
+OHG1997 hehehe, if u see me holler.
Will do! Although I'll have a hard time looking for ya
These guys are off the charts. I send this video to people along with the line:
I see your "ska", and I raise you progressive electric jazzfunk.
The smiles everyone has around 4:23 or so, as everything joins in, make my day every time.
Ahhhhhh so hard to count!!!

Ty.for all the incredible contributions of Jazz music keep it ALL Coming
The end of this song has some absolutely wild and scary sounds coming from the guitars
the first section is in 7/8, and then has one bar of 4/8 (not 4/4 as it's still counted in the speed of 7/8). The second section, is basically the same but in 7/4 (so you count half the speed as the first section) then the little breaks go 123-123456-1234 and is felt in 6/4. It only sounds weird because of the syncopation they use :) Finally the last part is in 4/4 which I'm sure you already knew :D
Shaun No Ego Down to Earth Regular Dude Martin on the Moog. His solo work is magnificent and his skills brilliant. I love his humor and that he is a fantastic band mate.
What a band, what a sound !!!
Funky horns, and funky breaks 4 days ! Jazz fusion lives again !
I dont see how anybody is still sitting... I would have lost it a long time ago
Dominique Mosley they're told to
Btw sorry this reply is 4 years late
Yet another great song off that album .. amazing job !!
one of the best band in the world!!!!! awesome!!!!!!!
You have to be mathematically astute to even enjoy what you're hearing. This will get you closer to god than listening to the fibonaccci frequency..... Outstanding musicianship!
Thanks for the amazing concert last friday at the North Sea Jazz festival in the Netherlands!!! You guys were GREAT!!!!
Yooo I'm amazed how the audience stayed in their seats after that . God that was SICK !
É impressionante o poder desse grupo. Bom demais! Venham tocar no Brasil. De preferência no Rio de Janeiro.
Eles vão estar mo rio daqui a um mês e meio! Já comprei ingressos e passagens para ir.
4:53 The guy in the audience summed it up pretty well
Man I haven't heard this type of playing (Execution) in years, I mean since the early whatever! Sound Truly never dissipates It only recreates in another space and time!
How in the world can the snare sound that good with only a SM57 on it!? Awesome sound engineering!
Hard to see but there may be a snare wire mic also, plus all those overheads and other mics pointed at the snare which one can assume they did a good job of aligning the phase of.
Oh, and I bet that guy tunes his snare really well. :)
2:18 I was laughing at Shawn Martin expression 😂
2:03 Shaun Martin literally just made me explode with this last line
Wow, Stanton looks so much younger and playful here than he does in the We Like it Here recordings. I didn't even recognize him.
Is stanton the bassist
Jorge Ariza He plays the Fender Rhodes
So he is the bassist
+Jorge Ariza um no. The Fender Rhodes is a tine piano, not a bass. The bassist is Michael League.
+wgraj ok. I instantly thought guitar or bass when I saw fender.
Had to take my jacket off about 4 minutes into this... It must have been a kick to hear it live and in the moment!
That silence at 2:17...
Corey Hansen was EPIC.
This is beautiful ❤️🧿
omfg this drummer is beastly
I LOVE IT FULL ORCHESTRATION...WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4:52 I see Crendor has been enjoying himself a spot of SP as of late
Just unbelievably good..
Thanks to Lalah Hathaway for turning me on to this group (via Family Dinner video). I think I'm in love!
OMD. had to listen to it again to catch the time. That is nuts
Coming on TH-cam for my daily does of Snarky and find a new video. Yes. Need to get this album!
I'm not quite sure where to begin the 4/4, I tried but couldn't :(
I finally learned how to play this song on bass a week ago. Woo!
absolutely stanky, love it!
My band out in Seattle is about to cover this at our next show. Not the whole tune though just the groove followed by improv to make it our own tribute to a great song. Good tune guys
Guys you've got to keep the DVDs available; we need visuals. Can you imagine a CD of Friends? I'm a new convert buying stuff off iTunes in the UK. Great music.
if you want to support artists, Itunes is really not the best place
Fantastic!!!
what a amazing band hi level I don't understand why people raising thumb down they don't know nothing about music they are tasteless what a good musicians greetings Hayo from Holland
I love recommending this song to bands just to see the colour drain from their faces.
This video has 2 dislikes, WTF??
I wanna know who disliked this music???
P.S. Love the feel, the groove, musicianship and vibes!!!!!!! Great work, Lotta Respect from Bibi!
With all due respect to those "dislikers": NON PORCO MARGUERITAS
A saying in dead latin tongue, meaning: "don't feed pigs with daisy flowers".
Oh man. Best band ever.
Anyone notice the thin wire (it's difficult to see) plugged into the back of all their necks? Yes, that wire taps into all of their brain stems and connects to a digital word clock server. This has been the untold secret to the nano-synchronous perfection of the Snarky Puppy musician timing. Google it if you don't believe me, because this multi-member precision is not possible without a sync server.
Oh, and that f*king bone!!
Someone told me this sounds like a ringtone and i cant unhear it
Damn this is too much amazing!
my favorite song hands down!!!!!!!
The song is in 4/4. The first two notes, played by the guitarist, are eighth notes. The first of those is the downbeat of 1. The reason it sounds like an odd time signature is that those notes sound like a two note pickup into the downbeat. The chorus is one measure of 4/4 and a measure of 3/4. The hits are on the "a" (meaning 4 e and "a") of the 3rd beat of the 4/4 measure, and the "e" of beat 2 the 3/4 measure. The guitar plays two sixteenths and an eighth note, the first sixteenth of that phrase is beat one. (1 e and)
its 3 measures of 7/8 and a measure of 11/8. Still adds up to 32
+Daniel McLean I agree. That's what I have counted, too.
It's in 23/6 and I'm 6
+Scottie Madonia I've counted three measures of 7/8 and one measure of 11/8 in the intro.
Let's all remember that this was written by the drummer... accents are a touchy thing and being able to establish a consistent beat through a rediculous amount of "off-off" beat accents is crazy good. Someone who thinks this isn't in a straight 4 listen to a tune called "Stretch" by Birelli Legrene (which is in a slow 2) and get back to me on that one.
Amazing ❤❤❤
Happy hour action!!!!!!!!!! Great tune!
I just love this band....AWESOME!!!!!!
Absolutely SICK!!!! The only thing that's better was seeing you guys do this one live!
WOW! Another great job, fellas'.
@beatendo, more incredible live!!! Saw them this past weekend, without Shaun & Cory. UNBELIEVABLE!!! Add Little Jon Roberts on drums with Spud and it was sick!!!
Clearly I've been made a believer in the "Puppy"
If you don't have this DVD yet - WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU?!?!? Get it! Now!
tienen futuro, los chavales... qué buenos !!!
shaun martin on this and thing of gold were the best 2 moog solos ever performed. EVER.
Great groove, especially love drum trickery @ 2:24-2:32
OMG! The break at 2:17. Insane shit! Thumbs up!
KICKINITDELL PURE RAW FUNK AT ITS BEST AND THE DRUMMER IS AWSUM STICKS
Fantastic band. Wow!
Sput is so awesome...
All time favourite
Yeah, I hear ya, man. It was more of just an expression. Me and a couple o' friends saw them in Lafayette with Funky Knuckles, it felt like no one was still that entire show. So much energy, fun, and just all out grooviness! So much wonky dancing that evening.
Hey,
I find it works best in 7/4 and 9/4, but all ways are awesome. Such a crazy piece, however you count it!
pick up beat at beginning 7/8 * 3 + 11/18. The breakdown soli is 6/4. Back to the 7/8 and 11/8 thing. Then a bar of 13/18 before 4/4. You're Welcome...
The breakdown soli is 7/4, not 6/4.
oh! i see the extra beat there. Good call.
Ah, got it now. Thanks a lot.
the soli is 4 bars of 7/4, then one bar of 6/4, repeat.
There's no such thing as x/18 :)
I love snarky puppy!!
This Jazz is way better than the ones I hear in my workplace.
I'm sorry but your both incorrect. Sput actually wrote this tune himself, and explains and demonstrates the time and groove on MikesLessons. Yes, it can be counted various ways, but it was written by Sput alternating between 7 and 9.
raahh this is madness! shaun is so sick on the moog
Is that Bill Evans 0:09, Justin?
It's so nice to know that the 4/4 time signature has a whole lotta mileage left in it! Nice, tight arrangement. Now, where's my Excedrin?
Snarky Puppy is music
what kind of piano effect is that!!! so awesome
AMAZING!!!!!
still love it!!
