This song is insanely difficult... it took my band I almost 10 months to learn... but this song is what got us 3rd place in the Reno Jazz Festival against high schoolers as 8th/9th/10th graders. Amazing song, simply amazing.
Ha first time I heard this I was pretty overwhelmed at how much I loved it straight off, there was absolutely no 'warming up' period to it, just loving it more each listen :)
This music is like if The Brand New Heavies fucked Neneh Cherry, and had a baby. Then that baby grew up, put a tight ass band together, and then 70's era Herbie Hancock wrote the music for them.
"Choose Your Weapon" is one of the best neo soul Albums of the 2010's. It's a classic!! Mark my words. This album will be heard, remembered and collected for the years to come because of songs like this one. It took some time for me to fully grasp the genius, creativity and the fact that it's so out of the box. The band again is amazing on this track and the singer touches my heart with such a depth in the melodies she sings!!
IM GONNA be 43 on saturday and of course i come from the golden era of hip hop and good music....... I no longer listen to hip hop but i look for quality music . and this is crazy, I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and you are 100% right!!!!!!!!!
Your post is old (I'm just now finding it) but I hope you enjoyed that 43! And it's really dope to find folks not only in the 20 somethings still appreciating good music and still going to shows (me) to enjoy it live. Missed out on Hiatus coming in October though. Sold out. My huge error and my loss. Le sigh.
Look I know I'm hella late but I feel like they have made this just for people who are in tune with not only music but theirselves. I'm just now starting to put my waves to this bad and I'm in love
I used to listen to Jazz Fusion in the late 90's, Jazz Funk- eg Roy Ayers/Jamiroquai, Afrobeat- Kuti, then Nu Classic Soul- Badu, Maxwell, D'angelo...later Amy Winehouse, Warp Records....when I heard this I thought at last they had a grandchild and called it Hiatus. Thankyou
+Mordecai Pladah Can you please give me some recommendations! The older I am getting my taste for music is growing deeper and deeper. Music like this is therapeutic and relaxing.
Finally saw them live a year ago, standing right up front. Near the drummer. Husband had to catch my ankle cause I left the planet and went wherever these gifted creatures live. Mind blowing. Absolutely transcendent.
I saw them live last week in Boise, was right in front of Bender, got to see him do the iconic bass riff. Absolute bucket list moment. Please see these guys live if they're near you.
+Fudgecake it's all in 4/4. They just play with the concept of 3/4 inside of 4/4. The figure is over two bars of 4/4. They give the feel of 3/4 with the dotted quarter notes but that only covers 6 beats which is why it seems like there are two stray beats at the end which messes people up even more. So four dotted quarter notes and then two quarter notes makes it seem like a really odd time signature or for some the hear a bar of 3/4 then 5/4 but it's just all 4/4.
I am truly upset it took me this long to discover who these guys are and how amazing their music is. This is what I have been looking for in a funk band for so long!
They are the PERFECT band. hearing them is like how I felt when I first heard Jamiroquai. I'd almost fly to Australia to hear em. Love this Band...and I'm 42!!!!!
I haven't been able to listen to anything else other than by fire I don't understand it's been months , day in day out every opportunity I get I can't help myself its majestic you people are magic it just never gets old there's always something new every single time it's like love it's like you're hiding no secrets just wonderful I can't explain
[Verse] Direct to the old Navajo by the fire Wish we were burn your design Suede and hawk feather entwine me to the time Arizona in July A bell that rings in the chest of story told Meet you in this future bold Sage at key point lead me to his funeral A man lost young and old [Outro] x2 Regret less the knot yes I give you the end to hold And through darkness and earth wet I seek through the land to mould A woman that rests night and day, sweat and tears unfold To undress the burdens that caress the blessed I’m told
This is where I hope music reaches in the future. This is what I hope people will call real music and watch concerts and performances of. This is what I hope people call real music.
In the past week or so since I first discovered this band - and this song, I estimate I've heard this song 60 or more times now by way of just leaving it on repeat one forever! This song is the EVERYTHING GOOD AND RIGHT WITH THE WORLD! I'm too non-committal and fickle to be able to commit to a "best song of all time" designation for any song...but this is definitely the best song in the world "of the moment" for me! This song is so fresh and unique, and yet somehow also manages to invoke so many things for me! It invokes early 2000's Jazzanova, mid-late 70's Genesis, early 80's Math educational videos, 80's video games, and even the Sega Genesis version of the NBA JAM team select theme! Nai Palm's vocals even invoke some unspecifiable late 90's and early 2000's mid-tempo / chill electronica. Gosh, I'm gushing! I just CANT GET OVER THIS TRACK!!!!!! Whoever thumbs downed this thing is utterly soulless and should feel only the most searing furnace blast of public shame!!!!!!
Heard this on the radio the other day, Triple J was pumping it. I was flawed but the level of creativity in this song, I just spend the last 40 minutes scrolling down Triple J's song lists trying to find it haha. Mission done.
This masterpiece took my need for such quality lines to new level. The vocals, spared dynamics of loads of accurate notes and rythmics left me lacking words and means to search for better. Thank you, Hiatus Kaiyote. You have opened my ears :)
Time signature... I spent a week trying to figure this out... Heres my take: The main beat during the verse (starting 0:32) is in 10/8, however, the phrasing is devied into 3 plus 7 beats. which equals 10. Because 3 + 7 adds upp to 10 the drums can play "four to the floor" without being interruped so that makes the song easy to listen too, in other words its easy to clap along in quarter notes. eventough the phrasing ontop of the beat is complex and plays two sets of odd time-signatures (3+7). (genious if you ask me) On top of that the drummer messes it all upp by playing the one on the 3 + 7 part with a snare hit. so the beat becomes kind of inverted and you lose track of the one... usually the drummer starts the one with a bassdrum hit... but you all knew that allready... enjoy this masterpiece
jesterday evening i feels exactly the same... Sitting at PC and listening to some music... This track cames up and i stop doing all i do till than. it gets very late but i must listen it ever and ever again. Such a masterpiece ab mood... :D
After wakeup next morning i start listen it again!.... I cant believe after 37 jears in my life there could ever came up a track that surprise me so much....
What sorcery is this? Seriously, this song has magical powers. It temporarily (in my case two weeks) makes you incapable of listening to anything else. What an odyssey. Progressive yet accessible. Deep, mystical. Propulsive and soothing. Funky as all get out, and Nai Palm sings the s*** out of it. A modern classic. You can see how deeply moved people are by this song in the comments. Probably the song of the decade.

Hi Hiatus Kaiyote, I would love to play a cover of this song for my audition for a scholarship to the berklee 5 week, but they won't allow me to play anything that has drums recorded in it already. It would mean so much to me if you could send me a version without the drum track added, and I'd even be willing to pay if that's what it took. Thank you SO much, and keep up the amazing work!
So I only discovered Haitus last week...😱😱😱😱 insane... the only good thing about this is that I have a really long list of amazing songs to listen to... been on it non stop, haven't come across a bad song yet...

Yes! I love them
Through years upon years of study and many hours spent alone in practice daily.
it's a bit difficult to handle how good this is
Ha first time I heard this I was pretty overwhelmed at how much I loved it straight off, there was absolutely no 'warming up' period to it, just loving it more each listen :)
so easy on the ears. Chill vibes all the way
This music is like if The Brand New Heavies fucked Neneh Cherry, and had a baby. Then that baby grew up, put a tight ass band together, and then 70's era Herbie Hancock wrote the music for them.
I can't stop listening!!! All other music is currently irrelevant.

+Mean Black Hippie at which moment exactly? thanks in advance
+Iskander67 Im guessing at 3:39 and so on a couple times
That intro needs its own track. With that beat, and that Gothic choir, instant hit.
Anyone notice that the double-headed, fire-fisted, track suited ocelot is also married?
Peatman 😂😂😂 I didn't notice that!
Haha
Lol I've never noticed that 😂
Probably to itself
It’s probably married to the other head
This song introduced me to a whole new world of music.
Simply incredible
Next level musicianship right here
YES YUP YAAAY
3:23 reminds me of those old dog toys that used to be sold in swap meets, but like in beautiful harmonies. 😅🤩
This song along with every song on this album is just pure 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
These people are pushing boundaries.
Yes ALL boundaries loving them SO MUCH!!!💕💕😍😍😍😍😍💓💓💓
It was all quite the norm in the prog rock era of the 70's. It's pretty good, but it's not new
Amazing how such complex music is that easy to listen, these guys truly are legends
This intro 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm African and this band made feel that i have to visit Australia one day.
Those time signatures mess with my brain... Jesus Christ what a song, perfect.
The Beginning is in 4 with a 2/4 thrown in there. From there on it's 4/4+4/4+2/4 during the versus.
Fun.
+FlyingNirangatang | FIFA 16 Career Mode! the beginning is 4/4 dawg
Second part is 10/8 I think:)
Through darkness and earth wet I seek through the land to mould
A woman that rests night and day, sweat and tears unfold
To undress the burden that caress the blessed I’m told
