One of my most requested games to react to, and indeed one of my favorite RTS games of all time! Gates of Hell Ostfront!
In this part 1 episode, we take a look at 2 of the 4 available factions in the game, the US & Germany. We'll go from Sherman's (everyone's favorites) all the way to Marders, Tiger's, and Pershing's!

Ah yes, Ostfront, a game about "no, no, no! That was my level 9 sniper, you can't do that to me!" and rabid kleptomania.
Stealing shit is men of war style games calling card
*looks at Men Of War 2*
Nice Tiger. Thanks, I'll take it.
@@stuartdollar9912
Men of War 2 player trying to name soviet tanks and wondering why they're all named after animals.
"STOP! ONLY SHOOT THAT TANK IN NON VITAL SPOTS!!!! We wanna kill the crew not ruin our new tank!"
I think the peak of Ostfront is how they managed to make the Western front Germany campaign feel like you're constantly losing. Defending a town in 1944 and having one of the tanks that turns up to support be a Char B1 will never not be funny.
what mission? i dont remember that happening to me in any mission
@@DanT-dh8lz Luttich, it was probably a specific doctrine, I remember it happening a while ago.
"Germans what theyt see a random AT gun and a stolen chassis"
Germans: Free real estate
Ah yes, Osfront. A game where you are at mid campaign germany with only 2 stugs and 3 panzer iii then the soviet throws a column of KV, and T-34s like there's no tomorrow.
Also your uncovered panzer ace tank that you just got emotionally attached to just got burnt by a swarm of lvl 1 partisan.
accurate
Except the soviets still loose somehow
@@garyslayton8340 my tank fleet got rolled, all the infantry gunned down. Only because the timer run out that i win.
@@dummyxaverie6381 I mean tbh the game does a really good job at stressing how important combined arms is. No matter how strong a tank is its gonna get rolled if infantry get nearby, and many people learn the hard way that they need to keep tanks out of AT infantry range if they dont have their own infantry to support them. Tanks will also get detonated by planes and AT guns if you dont have AA and recon squads/officers giving vision.
So, pretty much like how the war went in reality.
I play this all the time with the Valour mod to quench my thirst for italian silly tanks
I wonder if we‘ll see Italians first or Romania/Hungary (hope they‘ll come in the same DLC).
Honestly, there’s so much unique things to add. Maybe we‘ll see a small content addition regarding Yugoslavia, or Greece. Crete would be nice, maybe we‘ll get a vanilla implementation of parachute jumps together with a Crete mission.
So much potential content additions.
I played alot of MOWAS 2 with the WOT mod, bro it was soo fun making maps with one thousand tanks fighting eachother.
My best memory playing this is when i controlled a soldier in 1st person, entering a village then the whole house i was in violently vibrates.. then i see a KV 1 rolling outside, rotating her turret on me.
When you commonly only play tank vs tank game, this game will be a great experience.
There goes my panzer 3s too.
When you play as germany vs soviet in conquest you need to throw all research points to the tank tree!
I had a game of ostfront the other day and while defending a point I noticed that a sherman that was taken out in the first couple minutes started an ammo cookoff about 15 minutes later while nothing else was happening. I thought that attention to detail was so awesome
I’ve seen that happen too. I was stealing the enemy tanks after a battle and heard an explosion from across the map. I went to see what it was, and found the tank on fire and without its turret. It’s cool that that can happen, I’ve only seen it once.
Finally one of my favourite ww2 games getting covered on this channel
and I think your profile picture implies hoi 4 is also one of your favorites
@@Dark-28200 yes
Man I love tanks
Aye, you covered GOH! It's one of my fav RTS (literally have over 1K hours in it lmao)
I keep telling my buddies this, but for an RTS, it is so fucken detailed! It's honestly just a really fun game. I'm still hoping the next major update adds the UK/Commonwealth!
Love your videos as always. I'm looking forward to PT 2 :)
I just want the Japanese like in as2. Banzaiiii
"What if quirked up white boy started cooking?" Is something I never expected to hear in a video about the history surrounding a WWII rts
if a ww2 soldier heard that sentence they'd probably hitler themself
Glad you finally reacted to Ostfront's vehicle's! This is one of my favorite games ever and their models are amazing on how realistic it is.
I can't wait til Eta has to drop 1600 bucks on IL-2 to review its vehicles lmao
The thing that I adore about GoH Ostfront is a ammorack cookoff animation on vehicle destruction, not a single tank-based-game did it realistic like this.
We really need foxhole quick! Also don't forget the relic vehicles!!
12:55 nice hair flick
little known fact.........
.
i made the FIRST Finnish mod for Men of War 1.......
well, not really
.
someone made all the models.... but didnt know how to get them to work in game
i took the models and added the code
and then someone (i forget his name) took my code and polished it up (like, adding pictures to the unit cards)
.
so... id almost expect to see some of the models (and my code) in this new game
Calum mentioned! I loved his video on the jerry can.
Wow! So cool!
Don't worry about the rambling, that's what I'm here for. No matter what the video is about, your attention to detail and explanation of little differences is always educational. I learn something new about some vehicle or another every single time, and I love that.
It says a lot about the Sherman that I'm still learning new things about it literally every time it comes up. How many fucking times did they change a tiny part of these things?!
The madlad actually did it! Thanks!
Babe wake up, a new eta320 video dropped
Played a match earlier. Sent a swuad into a house and placed an AT gun next to it knly for the entire house to disappear except the north wall from a soviet siege mortar deciding it doesnt like that house anymore. 10/10 would recommend
10:24 Don't forget the (75), (76), and (105) Shermans in addition to everything else you have listed off, because good GOD they really gave use a LOT of Shermans.
They even gave us Duplex Drive Shermans and there's THREE variants of the M4A3 (76)W HVSS!
Lmao the L3 with the 3.7cm is perfect
The t40 you mentioned during the Jackson section is in world of tanks funnily enough. It was one of the tier 4 TDs in the American tree. At least a few years ago I haven’t played in a while
Man your videos are incredible bro you are a master peace
Tank enthusiast makes: the IS-7 video
joins for the tank "content", stays for Eta's majestic looks
here, have some extra ad revenue from having this video run in the backround for me
Lmaooo majestical entrance my dude
Loved the Video Eta, have a great day
Over 1000 hours and I never noticed how detailed some of the models are. I now have a much deeper appreciation, thanks!
Sherman Enjoyers tech tree Paradise
Amazing video big dawg❤❤❤
Can't wait for part 2!
whoa, the production value and the editing have been upgraded massively with the intro and all. Keep up the good work, Eta!!
I hope you'd cover not only tanks in video games, but also tanks in Cinema (movies, TV series, documentary reenactment, news, etc.). Cheers to you :D :D
quite literally my favorite RTS of all time
me and my friends play this so often, have all the dlc
my husband has had to pull me away from the screen because of conquest, he literally "wife, yknow what time it is? right?"
i said midnight
the sun was about to come up.
great game, go get it, the campaign, conquest, and skirmish are AMAZING
the conquest satisfies my homeworld girly need to steal everything.
Lets goooo new eta vid
Ahh yes a actually good rts rare in today's age
21:35 Actual Panther gameplay in War Thunder.
I'm just here to look at Eta
Can't wait for part 2
the legend has returned
During your like tank mechanic simulator live stream when you mentioned that the 76 shermans had a loaders Coppola only one I found out that does is the M4A1(76) the M4A2 and A3 (76) do not have a loaders Coppola they just have a straight-up loaders hatch similar to the jumbo
Swapping to The Last Tiger music when the tiger rolls out. *Nice.*
6:16 my guess.... A1 would mean its the same chassis...
B1 isnt really used ANYWHERE ELSE in the military.... so it lets people know "hey, this one is different"
Crazy þat þey modeled serial numbers.
I have been playing ostfront for 5 days nonstop with my freinds and low and behold who uploads a video on it?
I love the content man and i hope you keep up the good work
best wishes from across the pond
that TIger 2 turret looks like a IS2 ngl
It's an early version of the turret that only the first 50 had
In War Thunder, Non of the Jumbos have the weld line
Nice vid again Eta :)
Hey Eta320, I see you use the campagain mode to view all the vehicles! There is an editor mode in which you can find many hidden tanks which you can find in the doctrine game modes, and also just in campaigns. From the M42 Truppenfahrrand to the Pz.756(r), and even things like the 50mm Grappling gun launcher, Gaz98, "Nkl26", SU-100Y,
Battlefield 1 soundtrack go crazy
Aint that Battlefield V?
@@LEGIONCABAL def bf1, the song is even called battlefield one
@@douweboersma214 I see, ok its also in BFV, probably a version of this one. nice to know
The only thing missing from the american sherman line up in GOH is the M4A2 varients which are only available on the soviet tree, which you can argue is accurate to the lend lease deal, but I'm not sure why it wouldn't be on the US tree as well.
15:03 Honestly, Gates of Hell is a labor of love.
283 views in 28 minutes?
Eta does NOT fall off
Just an observation: Eta looks like the kid from Jumanji when he's turns into a monkey
Men of war Assault Squad 2 Is one of the best games I think I've played
bro has a Panzerfaust in the background
17:53 My only complaint about direct control is that we have no actual First Person perspective outside of mods for infantry. But I can settle for third person and classic MoW view DC.
ah, a suggestion for future videos, please put the list of tracks used in them.
The BF1 soundtrack brings back good memories btw :> :>
Now our Tank Enthusiast must react to Graviteam Tactics Mius Front.
10 views per minute seems like a good ratio
Finally, Peak has posted
i'm surprised you didn't just use the model viewer in game, that you can use to switch camos and skins.
Ramble on!
looking forward to that coh2 review
my favoritt rts of all time
Finally!!!!!
Finally! Ostfront is getting some attention! Gotta be my Top 1 RTS overall. Nothing can best it.
This game is peak!
21:39 Yeah that's probably historically accurate.
Tanker? I hardly know her!
Probably shouldn't be calling the M36 the Jackson given that the name's a postwar invention, just like Hetzer. Scott meanwhile was a suggested nickname for the M8 HMC put forward in '44, but there's apparently no evidence for it being adopted.
Also fun fact; the tank we know as the Sherman Jumbo was never called that, the name was added postwar by a modelling company, likely to help sell the model more, and it's simply stuck ever since.
Jackson is probably a wartime nickname. Red Wrench has an amazing video diving into the M36 (link to it is in the description of this video). In the video he pulls up documents from Armored Archives that show the '90mm Gun Motor Carriage, M36 ------ General Jackson' as listed on a document. There is also a document that shows '(2) 90mm Gun Motor Carriage, T71..... Black Jack' with the 'Black Jack' name under a column for 'Proposed Name' on the document, again suggesting that the name was being thought up of during the war.
Admittedly, Red Wrench himself suggests to "use these at your peril" as we don't know exactly when the documents were written. However, since the General Jackson is shown in a list next to General Stuart, General Chaffee, General Sherman, General Scott, and Hellcat, I am personally inclined to believe it was written up during the war, if not within months of V-E day. There is always the possibility that the name was only popularized post war. But in my opinion, the name was assigned to the tank during WWII.
(Edit after rewatching the Armored Archives video itself) He doesn't say when the documents were written, but he definitely implies they are wartime nicknames, same for 'Slugger' and even 'Wolverine' for the M10. I know The_Chieftain has his famous quote on how nobody knows where 'Wolverine' came from, but this is one of very few things I disagree with The_Chieftain on, as the US had officially written that TD's be given the names of predator animals (famously 'Hellcat' was used for the M18, but from what I know it was Buick themselves that came up with that name for marketing), and 'Wolf' is used as an example (this is also shown in Armored Archives' video).
TL;DR I could always be wrong, but to me the evidence suggests the name was coined and assigned during the war.
@@eta320 Understandable, makes sense to me. I do recall reading that while Scott was suggested for the M8 in '44, it didn't seem to be adopted, but it's a nice enough name that distinguishes it from the Stuart that I'm inclined to keep using it, certainly enough evidence that I've not gotten any real pushback on it over the years anyway.
Jackson I've not seen much evidence for (though I've probably not looked as hard as Armoured Archives, so I'm not going to proclaim that I'm an expert on such things). Definitely not seen any evidence. Though honestly I'd take it or leave it with the Jackson, I originally only learned about the M36's existence from its inclusion in Company of Heroes 2 a decade ago. So while it's adoption is likely a postwar thing, I'm inclined to stick with it.
Personally I'd reckon that the M10 should keep not having a nickname because Wolverine just doesn't seem to sit right for me. I'm inclined to go with the idea that Wolverine was a postwar adoption and I wouldn't really want to count it as the nickname, and stick with 'M10 Tank Destroyer'.
As for why I'm arbitrarily counting Jackson and not Wolverine...personal bias, honestly.
as for the Hellcat... well honestly I've got nothing against it and I'm willing to leave that alone because I've just accepted it and done no research.
You should do the tank models in combat mission rts franchise as well now that they are almost all on steam
6:49 The hatches on the engine deck are too far from the edge to be an A3, so I think they were trying to go for the diesel engine here. It would also solve the exhaust issue
The engine deck on the M36B1 has the hatches extend to the edge (7:54)
So the only thing wrong is that they labeled the M36 not as M36B2
I would be inclined to agree, as I almost felt the same way while editing, but this engine deck has the proper amount of fuel caps on the deck (4 total, each sort of taking a corner of the deck) where the B2 with the diesel has many more (4 on each side, very closely spaced together iirc).
Also I’ve since learned that the developers went straight to the group “WWII Armor” down in Florida in the US to model their tanks, and I did some asking around as I know some people who are with that group, and they reported that their M36 is a GAA Gas powered tank.
You can also see the engine model inside the grills, and it is a Ford GAA that looks identical to the M4A3’s engines in the game, and not the same as the M4A2 as we’ll see in part 2. So they actually modeled a GAA and a 6046 Twin Diesel, they aren’t using a generic engine model.
I think the hatches being too far from the edge is just a modeling error with perspective and scale.
TL;DR, I do think they intended to model a gas powered M36, and the exhaust is the genuine error
@@eta320 I completely overlooked the fuel caps lol
Its cool that the devs tell people where they went to get references for in game models, I haven't heard of any other game do that.
30:00 that's not something you see in GuP =(
Tiger 2: Electric Boogaloo
Any shot you could check out easy red 2 small game but has a ton of tanks
Yay
I think you should do a video on steel titans like the one you did on cruise tank simulator
Big metal box is good
COH2 MENTIONED WE'RE SO BACK
Gates of Hell Ostfront is the the BEST WW2 RTS game. Buy it now.
You should do one of these for WARNO (I love cold war tanks) or steel division 2 (I like WW2 tanks as well)
wonder where i have seen this one before hehe
29:06 Honestly they're a bit like Orks, they just loot everything and mash guns and vehicles together!
I know you're only reacting to tanks and probably spgs but you got to check out Hot mod crickets pilot. They have really good models for their cold war stuff
He bac
assult squad 2 is like Call Of Duty....
Faces of war (and the very first Men of War) are like ARMA 3 with realism mods
.
like.... they removed SO SO SO many features/mechanics in assault squad 1/2
it honestly felt rushed to me.... (like no SP campaign was CRAZY to me)
.
i REALLY miss playing Faces of War with my European friends.... dudes name was like "Memorex"
we was russian and took me under his wing.... showed me the strats
.
i STILL will buy an inf squad, truck/halftrack, and an AT gun at the start
its harder than just buying a tank right off the bat..... but its good VS everything
.
and if you can get a few kills with that AT gun..... you have won the game
the cost to reward is MASSIVE.... and at the start... that allows you to take positions and set up mines (my other favorite thing lol.... mines in the most troll spots ever, or across the WHOLE MAP)
Another way to differentiate the Tiger II by turret is to call them what the Germans called them at the time (or call them that but in English of course) which would be Vorserien-Turm (Preseries Turret) and Serien-Turm (Series Turret). The original turrets were only used as there was a surplus of them and when the Henschel design entered series production they also switched to the new turret (that switch may have been a bit before or after I don't know the exact time on that) and so it was convenient to call the new turret the "series turret" to denote that it was produced for series production of the tank.
Also the concept of a tank destroyer had already been floated around in Germany as early as the late 20s when the Weimar Republic experimented with 37mm guns on halftracks, both of which were very unproven concepts at the time, though the gun was likely the TaK 1918, the world's first purpose built AT gun, or derivative of it. I haven't been able to find more information on those experiments with some brief research but I've seen images before in videos so maybe dig that up if you're curious. My point is the Spanish Civil War didn't birth the idea in the German military for a self propelled AT gun but rather reintroduced it or proved it as viable
Please do a video on Britain's cruiser tanks, especially the Cromwell
Great video mate, but the Union Flag on the butt of your rifle behind you is upside down
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
somebody should make eta play MTC4
What’s the song is on the background when he talking about Pershing??????
‘Libera Me’ from the Battlefield 1 Soundtrack
you should play steel fury with the sta mod
Hey Eta you should do the MACE mod. They add more tanks and other stuff.
do a slighthy confusing guide to T tanks, like T34, T44, etc.
Hello, dude do you remember that roblox tank game? so it appears that they updated it and added a lot of realistic stuff and I was wondering if you could do a video of it as its kinda different from the usual, thank you.
