  • Can the Cessna 172 be stealthy? I do not know, but this is definitely one of the dumbest vids I have ever made.

It's funny you say that almost every pilot has flown one or at least seen one. My dad used to take me flying in one all the time, I still remember flying out over Morten Bay and Morten Island on winters mornings. That was the best time of year to do it, the water was crystal clear and barely had a ripple. We'd see rather large sharks, whales, dugongs and fish, then we'd fly at around 50-150 ft. off the beach. It was so much fun. When I was 7 he let me fly the plane, but not that low or over the land and only for a short time. When I was 10 he let me land the plane, but not down near Brisbane, it was when we moved to Cape York we, we took off and landed at a friends cattle farm.
My old man was an instructor so that helped, but he taught me to fly 152's 172's and 185's. Eventually I had a few hundred hours of flight time (not solo, I was still early teens by this stage).
For so long it was a dream of mine to become a fighter pilot then a commercial pilot... sadly as it turns out being completely color blind kind of limits your options. I still remember going through recruitment and passing all the tests, but after having my medical the recruiter looked at the results and shook his head, then stamped my file with a stamp that said CP3 and said "this will follow you for the rest of your career". He was genuinely sad about it but I could not think why... then I found out why, the military frowns upon it's pilots being monochromatically colour blind. Oh well, what you gonna do about it?
I sub'd and left a like, I really enjoyed the video.

@@aegiselectric5805 Life I suppose. I went and did something stupid; I enlisted in the army. I wanted to be an infantryman like my grandfather, but was told I couldn't (even though I was midway through basic and I had been told I could...). I was a qualified marine mechanic at that stage, so if I could join the Royal Australian Engineers like my uncle. They said no, because I was colour blind (try to make sense out of that...). I couldn't even be in transport corps. But anyway a long story short, I left the military, got married and had kids.
But I've never flown again, not in private or commercial aircraft, last time I flew was on a DC3 (yes, I am that old lol) from Weipa to Cairns when Air Queensland still operated (got to briefly fly that too a few years prior to that). Sometimes I think 'what if this or that?', but you can't.
I fully understand not being able to fly commercial aircraft, but private VFR rated I honestly cannot. But rules are rules, there are people out there that have it worse than me. And not being able to fly is not really the worst thing in the world.
Cheers have a good one mate.

Radars use all kinds of wavelengths. Ground usually being longer. They all have their pros and cons. All radio is non-ionizing. Microwave just means you’re in the GHz range. You’re 2.4Ghz WiFi and Bluetooth devices operate at the same frequency as a food microwave. That’s why the FCC made it a license free frequency, because it’s so dirty. The F-35 introduced millimeter radar that can basically see the shape of its contacts. 3 things you can do with radar is reflect, absorb, and refract. Basically any metal reflects like a mirror. Use that to send it in another direction. You can absorb with loop antennas of the right length and a load. Probably the most difficult unless you use a laser etched fractal pattern foil wrap on top of an insulator. Refract can be done with jagged metal dust from copper, silver, or gold. Then somehow align it where all the pointiest bits are facing out. That’s like comparing a mirror to a sheet of paper in a perfect application. Probably more like fog on a mirror. That’s all just theory from my basic radio spectrum knowledge.

    AEROSPACE ENGINEER HERE: Love it.
Never seen your channel before but this is fabulous.
I do have 1 question which I am certain you have an answer for but it wasn't mentioned in your video.
How did you deal with the C.of.G issue from moving the engine from the nose to the aft?
Its Ok if you simply fudged it at this point, but its the sort of thing you should point out.
FYI - I have private pilots license and YES I did a significant amount of my training in C172s.
If you take "fit for purpose" as the prime criteria then the C172 is arguably one of the finest engineering designs ever and that's across all fields. So we are clear in this context "fit for purpose" means _"What is the intent of this design? As in what is it meant to do and how is it meant to be used and can it be maintained to keep doing that task?"_

The use of decibels to measure radar returns isn't an analogy. Decibels are well known for being a unit in acoustics. But decibels represent a relationship of values, not a physical quality. Both acoustic signals (sound waves) and electronic signals can be described using dB because both phenomena follow the same power relationship. Radar ultimately comes down to electrical signaling. The magnitude of return signals, the noise floor, and the sensitivity can all be measured in dB. I'm not an electronics engineer, but I work with a lot of musical and audio equipment that requires an understanding of these things. The same principles can apply to a radar, just for a different purpose.

Hello! You are 100% correct here. However, approaching it as an analogy is much more friendly to a broad audience. Regardless, thank you for your insight!

Keep in mind that secondary reflection and edge wave diffraction contribute a lot to radar return. A reverse teardrop is actually quite unstealthy because the radar hugs the surface and then emits directly back from the point for example, basically turning it into an antenna.

Maybe someone already has mentioned this, but stealth/LO aircraft are designed without any 90° angles. When you look at two mirrors at 90° to each other, you will always see yourself. Same goes for radar. This includes any flaps, ailerons, intakes, stabilizers, etc. Radar electrifies the metal skin of planes and even trailing edges will cause reflections. If you see this, tips for next time!

Also you should do a video about the Horton 229 and how its materials and shaping would have worked against ww2 era radar! From what I understand it wasn’t meant to be a stealth aircraft, but between the engine location, flying wing airframe, and wood construction, with iron oxide based paint pigments, it would have been surprisingly stealthy!
