Flea Market Madness is great and I think it should still continue, even if it's just a few episodes a year. I don't really go to Kobey's anymore, but in the late 2000s and beyond, I was finding equally amazing stuff there just like Pat was. The legend is true. Surely the series can continue even without amazing finds.
It was me Pat. I’m surprised you remember that 10 years later. I had the cam doing hunting in a thrift store in early 2009. Mine was filmed in potato vision on an original Razr phone in 180p. I had a small niche amount of friends and followers who watched each others videos in the early gaming community days. But Flea Market Madness IS THE seminal game hunting show on TH-cam. Yours was groundbreaking, influential, innovative for all the bigger shows to come later-the Game Chasers, Pixel game squad, retro hunters etc. I hope you continue to make FMM as I enjoy them as well as the Ultimate Nintendo books you write!
I especially like how Pat starts talking about something I want to hear about and Alex interrupts and derails the entire topic because he can’t help himself. Great podcast!
56:20 fact check, European Union population 449.2 million, United States population 334.9 million. US doesn't dwarf EU as an entity. That said, EU is really an economic union with free movement. Beyond that it's independent, self governing countries with their own identities governments and laws. People, generally are French, Spanish, German etc and not 'European', there isn't really a shared identity. 55:40 Germany has 83 million people, France (66.4 million), Italy (60.93 million), Spain (46.42 million), Ukraine (42.85 million), California population 39 million and Los Angeles County 9.7 million - so off base there too.
In terms of size the United States DOES dwarf the European Union. The European Union is 4.2 million square kilometers while the United States is 9.6 million square kilometers
I did not expect a Silver Spoons deep dive. Awesome! I’ll definitely be watching the series again as I too have misremembered it. I would love to hear a deep dive of Family Ties.
@PatTheNESpunk Just throwing this out there as a 34 going on 35 year old gamer who grew up playing Doom, Quake, Quake 2, Unreal, Unreal Tournament/Champions... Unreal T/C are absolutely boomer shooters, they qualify as such based on a few factors: Movement plays a key role in the gameplay. Doom may not have had jumping, but that was a factor of the engine capabilities of the time, and movement still plays a majority factor in it's gameplay. The difference between that and modern shooters, is that modern shooters are often stop and pop, cover based, hide and recover health, locked in place set pieces, run to the next point and watch the cutscene then pop off enemies behind cover, then move to the next setpiece fanfare. Doom was entirely about nonstop action which promoted movement in combat and the only retriction is the limits of the world around you, and that's what Unreal was about. The primary link for this is Quake, which is the quintessential marker for what makes a Boomer shooter; free-form movement, health weapon and armor pickups, consistent combat, no set pieces, old-school FPS gameplay loop design philosophy. Halo, while still a boomer shooter for the most part, was the deathknell for what was then the FPS genre as we knew it.
I used to be a 'wait for other people to grab food first' guy, but then everyone became one, and everyone would be standing around awkwardly with the food getting cold. Then the first person to grab food is like "well, if no one's gonna eat it" and will empty all of the most delicious food. Never again.
Flea market madness, the real day's of game hunting . Now people posting "game hunting/toy hunting " but its at a convention, curated for the person. Its not the same. Like calling shooting a caged animal hunting .
Back when Pat pooped his pants in third grade nobody even wanted those old games. They were dirt cheap. Pat may have been remembered throughout high school as the kid who pooped his pants but I guess he won by owning Surprise at Dinosaur Peak.
Less than 5 minutes in and Alex already showing he has no idea what he’s talking about when it becomes clear he has no idea what the concrete clear as day definition of Boomer Shooter is.
I've always enjoyed Flea Market Madness. Well, I like all of Pat's videos, not just that one series. A combination of Flea Market Madness and Game Center CX (a.k.a. Retro Videogame Master) inspired my own series called Anime Bargain Hunt. Pat, thank you for Flea Market Madness. It's always fun to watch. One issue I have regarding using the same location is the stock doesn't change. It can stay stagnant because the collector's common mindset is, "It's mind! You can't have it!! I'll never trade this!!!" until a major utt oh bill occurs, and then it returns back into the market.
Thankfully, I have my NT Mini Noir, SuperNT, & MegaSG & have a full, complete rom set for every system. I will NEVER look for physical cartridges. If one CIB should happen to cross my path I'll buy it, but the days of getting good deals at flee markets is OVER, especially with the advent of eBay. Garage sales are the only place you could even look nowadays for any kind of deal.
The only thing retro I remember about Patrick is when he pooped his pants in third grade. He certainly had a physical "cartridge" in his pants that day!
I've been doing a lot of rewatching shows in my '80s youth as well of recent. I'm just nearly finished with the 8th and final season of Who's The Boss? on Rewind TV. Silver Spoons is still on Antenna TV on weekends, and on right now this hour as I type 1p - 2p EST. I try to not let actions of people I once liked and/or revered get muddled by their later actions in adulthood though it has occurred. Like, when it comes to Silver Spoons in particular when Rick Schroeder bailed out Kyle Rittenhouse bothered me on a viceral level at the time and made me look at him a bit differently. Unfortunately there's been more since of others too but not about to air or list those names at this time. I enjoy the Pat deep dives on a show in this format with Alex, and hope he'll do more in future NSC episodes. Such segments may not be everybody's cup of coffee/tea but it does help being around similar age to Pat, give or take a year or two at most I believe, and having the life lived ability to find these discussions entertaining, even comforting to a degree.
Fortnite battle Royale came out about two or three months after the Main game… my kid and her friends were hooked on it even in 2017. It really kind of took off overnight.
1:18:55 Alex humming Petty Pat to the tune of Three's Company. Also please keep doing Flea Market Madness. I love the video games, however what really draws me in is the board games and toys. Those aren't things I'd collect so I'm not well versed in the market. Also because you're buying these items "as is" it's more honest in terms of expectations and prices. It feels like authentic reality TV. I also think there's a market for demonstrating the Avalon Hill games. Board games have come back and considering the D&D/TTRPG streams I think it would be worth a shot.
My cousin was married to Corky Pidgeon, the nerdy kid from Silver Spoons. He recently went off his rocker and left on some religious mission from God. Just up and left my cousin and their daughter. He is missing to this day.
Poop the pants, you pooped your pants Patrick. Poop the pants I remember third grade. I'm sure you have no idea who I am but I totally remember you poopin' your pants in third grade. You came back from the office with some random shorts on that was from lost and found or something.
At about the one hour mark you talk about how many retro convention visiting people around the world might watch Flea Market Madness, well i can tell you this much, i've visited some retro game conventions here in Sweden (a 10.5 million people country by the way) and as far as i can tell, there's not a soul who wouldent know about Pat's Flea Market Madness series there. So regarding the idea that a majority of retro game convention visiting people around the world watch that series? It actually sounds likely to me.
butt load is an actual unit as a regional English measure of capacity of a heavy cart (a butt), containing 6 seams, or 48 bushels, equivalent to 384 gallons
@@toastrave7820 😆I had no idea. Wow! Thanks. I had to ask ChatGPT to find out more. “A boatload is generally larger than a buttload, but the comparison depends on the context in which the terms are used. Here’s a breakdown: Buttload • A butt is a historical English unit of volume equal to 126 gallons (about 476 liters), specifically for liquids like wine or ale. Boatload • A boatload is not a fixed unit of measurement and depends on the size and capacity of the boat. For example: • A small rowboat might hold a few hundred liters. • A large cargo ship could carry millions of gallons or tons. Conclusion If taken literally, a boatload can range from being smaller than a butt (in the case of a tiny boat) to vastly larger (in the case of large ships). In modern informal usage, both terms are used hyperbolically to mean ‘a large amount,’ but a boatload usually implies something much larger.”
