Episode #3--My second day on the trail.
Route: Pasajes de San Juan to San Sebastián
Distance: 14.95 KM
Steps: 18, 696
A relatively short day in terms of distance covered but the terrain was more challenging and enjoyable. The nice hospitalero woke us at 6:30 AM by switching on the lights and saying 'buenos días' in a loud voice. No one responded. I had to pee at 4:00 AM. Going down two flights of twisting metal steps and bursting tested my character, resolve, and generosity when it came to leaving a donation.
After breakfast we took the boat across the estuary to Pasajes de San Pedro and we were soon ascending the steep stairs to the Faro de la Plata.
The climb led to a very charming walk through a forest to Ulía. I picked up my pace and very much enjoyed the technicalities of the path. Again, my poles were indispensable. We had several stunning views of the coastline and eventually of the seaside city--San Sebastián.
We walked along and past La Concha to get to a municipal albergue for young people. But the whole place (over 100 beds) was reserved by a group of school kids. Initially, the receptionist was short on ideas and enthusiasm about what we could do.
Today, I thought a lot about the inadvisability or the trade-offs involved in walking the Camino according to someone else's plan and/or recollections of things past however well-minded that happens to be. I don't wish to be selfish but I think I'm better off when I'm left to my own devices.
Also, someone who's overly concerned about going up and down hills is not going to find the Camino del Norte the most forgiving of places. Up until now, the variants are even harder and longer but they are voluntary and they repay little to be 'exigente' (demanding).
