How Tanzania's new capital Dodoma is changing

  • In just about 40 years, the city of Dodoma has grown from just a small town in the middle of nowhere to Tanzania’s capital. Tanzania is not the first country to shift its capital. Malawi moved its capital from Zomba to Lilongwe in 1975, while Nigeria effected a similar change from Lagos to Abuja in 1991. BBC Africa Senior Business Reporter Peter Mwangangi went to Dodoma to find out how the city is changing, and what is being done to respond to the increased demand for accommodation.

The Indonesian capital also moved from Jakarta on the island of Java to Nusantara on the island of Kalimantan. For now, the construction of the presidential palace, ministry offices, ministerial houses, toll roads and wharves is still under construction. Next year in August 2024 the Indonesian capital will officially move to the Nusantara. The relocation of the Indonesian capital there is also for equitable distribution of development, especially in eastern Indonesia and Jakarta which are already densely populated.

It is not a whole city that is called after his name its a place where govt offices and embassies are located. But in fact he deserves more homage than that b'se of what he has done in Tz. For example this project of allocating govt offices to Dodoma; the city was declared govt seat since 1974 officially, but it took 42 yrs to be implemented in a large scale but his four predecessors had done a little which is negligible compared to him. And that is only one area but there are many areas that he did very well to honoured by his ppl. After all the culture of naming after former presidents or African heroes is very ordinary in Tz u will find many places from halls, roads, streets, stadia, air ports and national parks named after Nelson Mandela, Kwame Nkuruma, Julius Nyerere, Kenyatta, Lumumba and soon. It may sound strange maybe from where you come from but in Tz that culture is very ordinary and acceptable. But to him (JPM) there many places that are named after him from bus stations, schools, bridges and even this location on video and this is not end many will be called after his name b'se he deserves even though he has passed away already.
