Great video as always. I assume that this is made for expats planning to move here and who earn more than what most Tanzanians make. However, it’s definitely not the average cost of living. Most people in Dar do not make that amount of money per month let alone spend it on shopping, going out, rent etc. Most of the grocery shopping they do is in the markets and they spend significantly less than what was stated in the video for way more. The same applies for eating out and rent. It would have been much better if you had insisted that as much as it’s your average cost of living in Dar, it’s not for most people and mentioned like average incomes and all that so that they’d be a clear distinction.
Hello I was raised in Dar Es Salaam. These prices are accurate given you live near the peninsula (east coast). If you go west into the city prices drop significantly so does the quality of live however. I am able to rent a 2 bedroom house in Sinza for 150 USD a month and it's about 15 min from the coast. Love seeing slipway again, I remember being 11 and getting my first kiss on the bench at the end of the pier. If you know you know. Drink a few safari's for me CHEERS
I live in the UK and those prices in Tanzania were so expensive. I would never pay that much for food on some of the items but I hear what you were saying about not wanting to go to different places. £57 on the items you bought for just one person is a lot. That didn’t even include drinks, toiletries, snacks etc.
They are, and it's mostly because the people who shop there are well of financially. Alot of the food items are imported from the UK, US or South Africa that's why its expensive. If you were to go to a local market you'd probably spend a tenth of what you'd spend in that supermarket.
Us local dont go to super market, we go to flee market and buy our things there and it is so cheap and you get somethings which are actually fresh or just loaded early in the market.

The average Tanzanian don't live like that. His utility bill is over $200? He's nuts. This is not the cost of living in Dar es Salaam, that's his cost of living. I can visit a local market get everything he got at the supermarket for 50k tsh. Which is about $20
I ve been there 5 times since covid . the main problem are the hotels . when it is good it is 45€ minimum . and hard to find something at 20€ as south east asia . the service is long . in restaurant . but Nice country n people
And it's not the average price for going out, usually spending a lot in McDonalds or kfc, it rarely goes over 10 pounds. What you bought is the average price of ordering at a high end restaurant on Uber eats.
sorry, you said, you dont pay a price of rent.. bcs you are employer and your company pay it .. I have rented a house in the suburbs, it has a large living room, kitchen, 4 bedrooms and two bathrooms with toilets. The water is free as it is from a local drilled source. I pay a monthly rent of 350,000 TSh, that's about 120 Pounds or about 140 USD in your conversion. If I were to live by your extremely expensive purchases, by the way I go to the local markets to buy basic groceries, to local street restaurants.. and I only need 7 USD a day and live well and healthy. So I don't have to earn at least TSh 5,000,000 a month.
Hi Martin, My husband and I are looking for an affordable home close to the price range you described. Do you have any suggestions for areas for us to look?
I would say 100 bucks for hotel and another 100 on expensive so 200 per day minimum. Depends if you want to travel like a back packer could be cheaper ..
Thanks for sharing your experience of cost of living in Dar es Salaam, nice presentation, well done. I had heard from a colleague (whose husband is from there) that I could live over there for around £300 per month including everything such as rental flat, food, utility bills but your calculation is almost 3 times more than her. So I was thinking to live over there for a few months of winter to reduce the crazy utility bills in Europe however your video told me otherwise, so I may think about some other places such as India. Also it would be good to explain how long a British passport can stay there or whether we need a visa or not. Is it possible to rent a room from a local resident in order to reduce the cost of living? Is there any British or European banks over there and what is the best way of paying bills or currency exchange. Would you categorise the country as a safe place to live for a few months during the winter months? Thank you again
Of course like anywhere u can live much cheaper than this. It’s pretty safe just petty crime really. There not really British banks here any more but even if there was it’s still locally run.
That is if you really stay at apartments or condominiums. If you stay at low cost housing, it will be cheaper esp. if you eat at low cost restaurant or food stalls. Spending $700+ a month is still way more expensive... in my country, spending money like that is considered living in luxury. That amount of money is for people who live in 1st world countries. Like us in the third world, we will choose wisely because we don't earn as much.
Doctor's salary per month in tz is 1.5M after all deductions such as paye, insurances, loans etc they remain with 900k-1.2M 😅, I don't know what the government is thinking as they provide salaries to employees which are below the living cost 😂
This video is accurate if you want to spend 700-1000€ a month. However, it depends where you live and shop. You can live way cheaper too. So food/drinks at 5star hotels/restaurants will cost 20,000 TZS (10€) per person. Or even more, just like in Europe. But if you go eat Grilled Chicken with Chips, or 1 big Kebab at a normal restaurant it will cost you only 8,000 TZS (3€). You can even go to the local places and get Rice, Beans and Spinach for 3000 TZS (1.30€) Same for shopping. If you go to a Supermarket you will see expensive stuff that has been imported from Europe etc. But if you go buy from the local market you'll pay 50% less. Get your veggies and fruits from there. Not from the supermarket. Taxi is also very expensive. 15,000 TZS per 7KM I think. Maybe more nowadays. UBER ride is 30% or 40% cheaper. There is also TUKTUK which costs x3 less than Taxi I mean who goes to Tanzania to not experience something new? It doesn't matter how much money you have, don't be so boring.
i brobably would go to a local market there, not for prices, but because fresh products R better (living in France 🇫🇷 i always heard it) i am African myself
It’s the same shit - it’s just all in one place more convenient- same in all countries - I’ve always found markets over rated - fun to go to - but not fun when you’ve just been working all day and you just want to buy food and eat
Some privileged expat I know the type . I think if you visit get Airbnb and go to local market to cook back home. I want to visit, I unusually stay in Cambodia and food there is amazing, I get an Airbnb and cook saving money and eating local food
The low fat milk is a bit of a scam, oat milk is less expensive in the uk, and oat milk is notoriously overpriced. Why didn't you go for something cheaper?
The amount of money you spent on the super market in Dar is quite expensive .Heare in Italy where i live with that amount of money, i can live for 3 weeks. As far as i can see its an expensive city. This is my opinion no offence.
Don’t know what you are talking about - most of the stuff (if not all) I got was still local and unprocessed and fresh. It’s just quicker going to supermarket.

There not really British banks here any more but even if there was it’s still locally run.
very interesting
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Good video
Cheers
I buy from local market 2 weeks food for family of 5 it cost me 8 pounds maximum total yr going exp places to buy yr food
And what do you eat vegetables ?
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
please help me understand why finding Thai food is weird in Africa but ok in the UK? What century are you in?
I don’t think you will ever understand
The English and their stupid assumptions....
I am yours fan .
It’s cheap cheap
That's because you're living in kisutu and you're shopping at osterbay, masaki and msasani so that's right
Some of it is cheap like the veg but most of it is more expensive than UK prices.
Man, man thats weird.
Because it’s imported
The fly part was not necessary of showing...
Why not?
Dar es salaam is pretty cheap if you're well informed, this is just a tourist lifestyle.
I’ve been here 8 years I’m not a tourist - I just not a tight arse who wants to spend their whole day trying to find cheap stuff
@@ArchitectRussell I think what he says is when you are well informed you don't need to always look for cheap stuff spots you just go to them
Doctor's salary per month in tz is 1.5M after all deductions such as paye, insurances, loans etc they remain with 900k-1.2M 😅, I don't know what the government is thinking as they provide salaries to employees which are below the living cost 😂
You can even go to the local places and get Rice, Beans and Spinach for 3000 TZS (1.30€)
Same for shopping.
There is also TUKTUK which costs x3 less than Taxi
I mean who goes to Tanzania to not experience something new? It doesn't matter how much money you have, don't be so boring.
Do you really think it’s new to me after 10 years 🤣
@@ArchitectRussell hit him uncle Russell
Bro went to all expensive places. like come on man. that's not the REAL cost of living. Come on man
You can stick to the REAL places if you like. I can’t be bothered any more.
roughly what do you earn?
That’s private
Go shop at kariakoo and at mnazi mmoja
With all the beautiful markets and fish market this dude takes us to a boring overpriced supermarket 😂
Can't change the western mind
I would say the fish market in Dar Es Salaam is the most un-beautiful place in the whole city 🤣 . Not exactly a pleasant experience at all.
If u live like locals you can save much
i brobably would go to a local market there, not for prices, but because fresh products R better (living in France 🇫🇷 i always heard it)
i am African myself
Time is money - why spend 3 hours when you can do it in 1
@@ArchitectRussell no wasting time if it is for your health dear !
😏😏😏😏😏😏
i heard you before my 1st comment...
It’s the same shit - it’s just all in one place more convenient- same in all countries - I’ve always found markets over rated - fun to go to - but not fun when you’ve just been working all day and you just want to buy food and eat
@@ArchitectRussellI agree . They are just cheaper but not necessarily better .
❤
Have u ever been in bagamoyo
Yes I went 3 times
Still cheaper than than living in USA.That total cost of living is not enough to for one bedroom apartment 😢
Some privileged expat I know the type . I think if you visit get Airbnb and go to local market to cook back home. I want to visit, I unusually stay in Cambodia and food there is amazing, I get an Airbnb and cook saving money and eating local food
Some cheap student brokie - I know the type
@@ArchitectRussell boom go on son get it out don’t hold back haha
Would love to visit Tanzania. Help
Welcome Karibu
Thank you
I definitely can help you out with ideas to visit my country Tanzania
@@videocreatorzz please help 🙏🙏

The low fat milk is a bit of a scam, oat milk is less expensive in the uk, and oat milk is notoriously overpriced.
Why didn't you go for something cheaper?
All the milk is more or less the same
Not bad..
I really feel like throughout the video you could have saved a lot of money, maybe even half if you were smart with it.
u forgot to add house rents
I mentioned it in the video - I don’t pay rent - you can add it if you want I gave the approx price
The amount of money you spent on the super market in Dar is quite expensive .Heare in Italy where i live with that amount of money, i can live for 3 weeks.
As far as i can see its an expensive city. This is my opinion no offence.
You must be out in the sticks !
$750 USD for food, shopping, entertainment, elec, phone, internet.
$550 rent
$1300 all in
The cost of living in Dar is a way cheaper than what you have mentioned. With 500,000 tsh / 200 usd you can live a decent life here
Decent means different to different people
What is your mission 🤔?
Imagine how locals can afford so!..even living simple.....👀
the cost of living in Tanzania is very expensive ! I think you are robbed lol total price for staying in such country won't exceed $150 a month
Depends how you live
Yes i agree, he is being robbed with them bills 🤣🤣🤣 lol..!! 400k tshs just for bills
That's very expensive, come to South east Asia is very cheap,
You can't come in here and live like in western, just be like us maisha hayo tuna ishi tukijipata 😅😊😅
I can. And do.
Expensive!
Bro welcome to India🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳 please vijit
Why would anyone visiting Africa, shop and eat processed foods. Leave the junk food in the West. Go buy local fresh food
Don’t know what you are talking about - most of the stuff (if not all) I got was still local and unprocessed and fresh. It’s just quicker going to supermarket.
