They should of made Chromecast to work off of a phone hotspot, so u don't need two damn devices

You could chromecast with one phone but you do need a wifi in the initial setup.. This video is kind of misleading...
I just set mine up and I have just one phone with it's own hotspot... Let me break this down in a way that TRULY works, unlike this moron...
For set-up, you WILL need a second device... This is the only time you will, after set-up the mobile will work on it's own... I used my laptop for set-up.
1. Make sure you have your Chromecast connected to your TV and power and TV is ON.
2. Turn on your phone's mobile hotspot and fire up your computer. On the computer, go to chromecast.com/setup
3. Follow the instructions on the website... It's pretty self-explanatory.
4. Once set-up is complete and the update has installed to your Chromecast, go ahead and shut down your laptop, you no longer need it but KEEP THE MOBILE HOTSPOT ON!
From this point on, your phone will operate the Chromecast perfectly fine while also serving as it's Wi-Fi connection. Only drawback is the Google Home app will not be set-up, as this requires a separate hotspot. However, this WILL NOT affect your ability to cast your favorite videos to the Chromecast... Just use the cast button in the apps themselves and ENJOY THE STREAM! :D

Thanks again, my Chromecast got a firmware update (that I'd no idea it had) and my auto connect to it disappeared, luckily it's easy to find your comments on TH-cam and that brought me back here quickly enough :-)

Thanks, I've searched & whatched dozens of so called tutorials to cast to my TV via Chrome Cast & all were useless - yours is very clear & easy to follow - ignore those below saying you're still using WiFi - you're using the phones connection not from a router.

I bought a wifi router at a thrift store and I don't have internet nor cable nor satellite tv. I was still able to connect my tablet to Chromecast and watch a movie from my tablet only using the wifi router. I didn't need a hotspot nor internet. I downloaded all cast on my tablet and was able to cast my movie onto my tv without issues. It worked just fine.
How is that possible

Thank you, Sam. Finally a video that talks me through it from woe to go without assuming any knowledge at all, and you explain it slowly and clearly. I was ready to take the Chromecast device back to the shop until I found your video. I got it to work once using an iphone and a Android tablet - really wasn't sure what I'd done, so couldn't replicate it - but know I'll have another go. Liked and subscribed.

SamCambetis Well, I got it working, thought I'd written down everything I'd done, wrote down all the wifi/bluetooth /hotspot settings on both devices before I turned them off, left the Chromecast plugged in at the wall, switched the phone settings on again and brought the Chromecast back up on the tv menu - only to find myself back at square one, back at set up and unable to connect. I refer the Chromecast to the iphone - the iphone says it's connected to the Chromecast - but the Chromecast can't connect. Last night, the iphone and android tab were tethered, now they won't stay tethered.
I'm ready to take it back to the shop. I don't want to have to go through this every bloody time I want to watch something. It's ridiculous. Sam, is there anywhere on the net that will give me step by step written instructions to connect to a chromecast using an iphone se and an android samsung s2 that's forgotten its wifi password?
God I miss my router. It's a thousand miles away and I'm in the land of the dinosaurs here at my elderly mothers.

SamCambetis Thanks for getting back to me, Sam. I'm so frustrated and confused at the moment, I don't really know what I'm saying, to be honest.
I followed your video and it was working. I used my android tablet for set up, then directed the Chromecast to my iphone when it wanted a wifi network. When I finished casting, I disconnected from Google Home. I left the Chromecast plugged into the tv and the powerpoint, wrote down the wifi/bluetooth/ hotspot settings showing on both devices, then switched the settings off and went to bed. When I got home this arvo, I thought it would be a simple matter of turning the tv on, turning on the settings on the device the Chromecast was using as a wifi network hotspot ( the iphone), bringing up the Chromecast and away I'd go - but it didn't work out that way. It took me back to set up again. The Chromecast was showing the iphone as connected on the screen, and the iphone was showing as connected to the Chromecast in the wifi screen - but the Chromecast kept saying it couldn't find the iphone.
Am I right in thinking I have to go through this two device set up thing every time I want to watch something? What am I doing wrong?
I'd try to direct the Chromecast to connect to my Android tablet as a wifi network, but for some reason the tablet doesn’t recognise its password anymore. I've no idea why, since I haven't changed it. It never rains but it pours, hey?
I realise I'm the problem - I'm not doing this correctly and can't get my head around it, but Google promote this thing as a simple plug and play device and it isn't- not if you don't have a wifi router handy. I also realise Google are upfront about the Chromecast not being designed for use with mobile hotspots - they expect everyone to have a wifi router. Sorry to be doing so much whingeing, but I can usually figure these things out and this has me foxed. It probably doesn't help that it's been so long since I've had to pair devices/use hotspots I've forgotten how. God, I miss my router :-(
+Kathy Heyne So I just tested with my ChromeCast. I turned off my home WiFi and tried to connect to ChromeCast using a hotspot and it made me go through the setup again.. so Im guessing if you have a WiFi router which is on and the ChromeCast is always connected, it will remember your setup. But if you don't have a router, your going to have to go through the setup each time. Which is really annoying, but like you said, ChromeCast wasn't really made for using it without a router.

+edgar flores I use WiFi to set up the ChromeCast (the installation). Then I turn the WiFi on my mobile off. Then I connect using hotspot, so it's using my mobile phones data.

So ...why? I have PS4 and Roku and if I'm using my 10g of hotspot data?? Why go Thursday all that. I'm trying to figure out if with a Chromecast CAN I Mirror MY UNLIMITED STREAM 4GLTE. cuz like every plan in America.... Hotspot is limited. Mine is 10g limited. So I'm In a area with no form of home internet.... So how in can I watch Netflix other than just watching in my small phone screen all day?

Hi. If I was to pre download something from Netflix then stream it this way with the hotspot on 2 phones, will it still use data? I also didn’t realize chromcast didn’t work without WiFi even if something was pre downloaded 🙄😤

If all you want to do is stream whats on your phone screen to your tv you can just buy a cheap Miracast dongle that mirrors you phone screen onto your tv as long as you have MHL on your phone. I understand Chromecast actually has this feature. It's not a perfect solution but it's workable.
🍷👍 Exactly, the Miracast mirroring works pretty simple and straight forward as it comes with its own dedicated wifi hot spot (Though it's wifi signal is very weak as I have found, and therefore you can't move your phone much away from its signal area). Miracast enables even your old tele to play Netflix or TH-cam which is a great option for anyone who wants to stick to their mobile data without needing to go for a dedicated fiber connection.
U can use just one phone as hotspot and controlling instead of two. First follow the steps u have mentioned then switch off the hotspot source phone and then change the controlling device hotspot username and password same as original hotspot source username and password and then use it as source to connect to TV.
I tried to do this, i connected to the second hotspot but then i can't cast from the second phone. do you know why?
It worked. Thanks for commenting. Saved me a big headache. I clicked the wifi off on the secondary phone and left the hotspot on with the main phone and viola. You're awesome thanks.

My question is, since your chromecast is connected to your phone via your phone's hospot, does that consume your hotspot data as if it was providing internet data to any other device as hotspot is supposed to do? Because most of the hotspot services I know have data limits, usually 10G as default. Would I be using hotspot data limit on merely having my chromecast connected to my phone via hotspot?
Yes, Unless you are using media from your phone and not your internet. Look for a new provider!

I use only one phone to connect but sometimes it takes ages after trying all of the following in different sequences: TV on, Google Home on, Mobile Hotspot on, then in connections click Mobile Networks and click Select Automatically.
Back to Google Home and swipe up to bring up the icon Cast My Screen and, you may be lucky first time. Then when you start the video click the cast icon in the film to get full screen.
This works but can take time if I have to retry many times, even rebooting everything so please HELP me with any suggestions.

I don’t have Wi-Fi at home so I can’t even begin to set up the chromecast which it looks like you have to do first before no Wi-Fi guest mode. Guess I have to return it. I was under the impression that third generation Chromecast was going to be Bluetooth mirror capable (iOS)?
Same story here. Really annoyed with this whole process. I have 5 phones and a laptop not no wifi for at least a couple months. So sick of straining to my Note and was hoping for an easy solution. Taking it right back as I can't even get through the set up without actual wifi. Such a bummer.
You can set a ChromeCast to run off only a phone with no home router with internet but you need to use the 2nd phone as shown here to set up the ChromeCast with Google Home. There is no ChromeCast with bluetooth mirror capability. It is all through wifi and only Android phones can mirror; iOS cannot mirror directly using wifi to a ChromeCast.

I've used a chinese Chromecast knock off and I only need to turn on wifi on my phone (without connecting to any network) and select the device in the "Cast" menu on my phone. Does the Chromecast works the same if I only use it for screen mirroring or is wifi needed for it to work at all?
Ahmes Syahda Chromecast works totally different from the fake one. The fake one is used to mirror the mobile screen and you have to keep the screen turned on through out the streaming process.
On the other hand, Chromecast uses the google cast protocol which you just tab the cast button on a mobile device, then chromecast will play the content by itself. So, you are able to use your phone play another application or even turn off the screen while the chromecast is still playing.
Chromecast is much better.

Ahmes Syahda Screen mirroring is available only connected by android devices. Unfortunately, Home Wi-Fi is what you must have even just to mirror a screen.

No - -you need a 2nd phone to act as a hotspot as you use the first phone to configure ChomeCast for the first time.

Your chromecast is still connected to your home WiFi and streams using that connection. So no, this is not without WiFi
No, the ChromeCast is connected to the first phone she set up a hotspot on. She is just using the same SSID and password so ChromeCast automatically connects.

Using mobile hotspot is much easier with a Roku than Chromecast. I can't set hotspot up with just 1 phone, it keeps asking for wifi during setup

The problem is I do not have hot spot.. Now what? This is the reason I have been researching. To see how I can use chromecast without wifi and hot spot (wifi), and I keep getting this same outcome for the last 6 hours. Hot spot is not a solution since I don't have it. What do you think hot spot is? If I had hot spot I would not be wasting my time only to get the same no sense solution. But you're not by yourself in this. Your solution is very popular. You need a phone and separate wifi source (2nd phone hotspot or home wifi) to set up a ChromeCast. After it has been setup with network name and password you only need one phone.

Yes, you need mobile data on the phone with the hotspot; Chromecast doesn't work without it which is a major flaw IMHO.

+Nicky Guy if you have WiFi you don't. Only if you want to us mobile data. ChromeCast isn't really made for using mobile data, it's made for WiFi. This is just a hack around it.

The Chromecast is still using your home wi-fi. You could've saved all that Wi-fi Hotspot stuff (then again, that's what the tutorial was for) on your smartphones.

1- can I use one device to do that? I have a sanyo smart tv I can connect my phone to via hotspot. But I would like to share the screen. Chrome cast seems like the only option. If it is that, it is fine because I have a Chrome cast. Is there a way to hide the Chrome cast wifi? I can hide my phone's hotspot. Can I do that with Chrome cast.
Essentially what I'm saying is. Can I use Chromecast and connect to my Samsung S10 but have the wifi for both hidden.
