    Im actually getting this for my Christmas, my dad was in the Falklands War so im building a small collection of aircraft from the war for the 40th anniversary (Super Etendard, This A4, Mirage 3E, Dagger etc)

      Finding the Dagger may prove difficult. Only decent one I know of is from High Planes Models, believe they are in Singapore. PM models from Turkey made one, but it's pretty poor.
      I'd like to get my hands on a Dagger as well, along with a Pucara. When I was in the USAF, I actually met one of the Pucara pilots that was shot down and captured.

      @@mh53j Yeah the Dagger and the mirage 3E were hard to find, ultimately i will buy the High Plane models as it is practically the only choice, and for the mirage i bought the Heller Mirage 3 with E variant with aftermarket decals, it doesn't come with armament and although an old Revell kits of the argentine mirage has bombs the mold has large gaps and bad flash. My dad who was onboard HMS plymouth respects the Argentine pilots alot, being how dangerously low they flew to avoid detection and AA even though his ship was bombed and attacked by daggers,

      @@charliehogg1639 I found a 3-D printed Dagger nose that can be fitted to the Heller Mirage III from a guy in Argentina, but that alone would cost over $30. Think PJ Productions have the Matra 530 missile and 550 Magic missile used on the Argentine Mirages..
      One of the decal sheets I have has a camouflaged Sea King used by Argentina... think I'll try that instead of the fast jets!

    It's also available as a Dogfight Double with the Sea Harrier in the 2012 Falklands 30th Anniversary set.
    Biggest problems are very basic weapons loads and Argentine version missing the very prominent antenna (VOR/ILS?) on each side of the vertical stabilizer.
    I'm making both an Argentine A-4B and, using a Brengun conversion, A-4C. Have to make a " shark fin" antenna for "c" version ( found one on an Airwaves Sea King photo etch set!)

    • @mh53j
      @mh53j 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PandaXs1 still working on that myself. I've found 1/48 aftermarket resin updates but nothing in 1/72.
      I found a circular piece (think for the dipping sonar) in an old Airfix Sea King that can be cut in half, but it's a bit too wide.
      Think the best thing will be to use some very small diameter brass tube I have from Tarmac (intended to be used for gun barrels) and then find something the correct width to bend it around... maybe an old paint brush handle with a groove notched in it so the tube won't slip and the antennas will be the same width...
      Then comes trying to get them located on the same location on each side of the stabilizer...
      This is the biggest problem keeping me from starting them.
      Airfix did the same with their Sea King kits...left off the prominent VOR/ILS antennas on the tail. Even their 1980s HAR 3 release had them.
      If you figure it out let me know as well! Honestly, I don't know how Airfix overlooks something like this.

      @@mh53j I have a feeling the Argentine colors were kind of an afterthought, and afaik the A-4 Argentina used was unique to Argentina so I can imagine it's a pretty niche conversion as it is.
      I have been able to find plenty of reference photos at least, but it makes me even more hesitant; it's not a simple loop and there's these wide hexagonal bases where the antenna goes into the tail as well.
      the only thing I've seen was on Flying S Models, but he basically did what you described, except after he had finished painting the model since it seems he missed it.

    I recall seeing the Argentinian Navy A4 Skyhawks attack HMS Ardent in 82 during the Falklands war.

    The Argentine markings are for Carlos Lecour’s aircraft from May 21st 1982. Carlos was flying as second with his flight that attacked the previously damaged HMS Ardent. Approaching low at at the HMS Ardent’s stern at about 20 feet (to avoid seaDart and SeaCat) with his ground collision warning blaring Carlos landed his ordnance onto the crippled hanger then banked hard and fled the area as Sea Harriers approached. Even though he wasn’t the first aircraft to attack, He started the subsequent fire that sunk the ship.
    I have this kit also and I’m happy that Airfix included this scheme but failed to mention the pilot on the markings. I plan to build Carlos’s aircraft myself

    When you build it, make sure to fill the union between both intakes and the fuselage. There're big gaps on those areas.

      If you can find the 1/72 decal sheet from Aztec (set #1), there are several different Argentine Skyhawk schemes; Xtradecal also has a sheet with Argentine A-4Cs, which would require a Brengun conversion for the proper nose. Argentine color schemes during the war were pretty diverse.

    Nice review, seems a bit pricey at £15 for what is in there but would get one if it was about £10. Painting white on even small areas with a brush can be a challenge but I have found Tamiya acrylic thinned about 50/50 with something like rapid drying lacquer thinners works well with an airbrush gives consistent results. May need a few coats to get an even finish but result is usually very good.

    Hey Matt, long time no see!😅
    I am quite a fan of A-4 Skyhawk as an aircraft. Must say it is one of my favourites, so i decided to by almost every kit that i could find on the today’s market😅. This kit is good, no doubt about that, but, at the end of the day, Fujimi one is still better (as far as i am concerned). It has more discrete panel lines and plastic is better. Both kits suffer from lack of cockpit details, and that is more unfortunate for Airfix since it is 30 years ahead of Fujimi in terms of age! Nevertheless, now, you can easily find Fujimi Skyhawks in Hobby2000 boxings, with Cartograph decals, and a nice sheet of pre-cut masks for cockpita. The price is similar to the Airfix kit, but you will see the difference, when compared, right away….

      During our deployment, stopping in Mombasa, Kenya, the Seamen's Mission displayed plaques from many ships. We saw one for the HMS Sheffield, and we raised a toast in her honor. Brave lads, a sad loss of a fine ship.

    Had a good time making this kit but managed to munt the canopy. Not being one to give up I bought another kit and took the canopy from there, so now have a full kit with no canopy. Might do a bit of a ‘what if’ and arm it with nukes for a fictional deterioration of NZ-Australian relations.

    Honestly, it all looks a bit naff. Even as old as 2012, you would expect better detail for a kit of that age. There are far better 1/72 scale Jet Aircraft kits out there. This is one of the reasons why I tend to steer clear of building 1/72 aircraft. I much prefer 1/48 or bigger, mainly because I am 59 years old and my eyesight is poor for close up work lol.

    Airfix's quality control is non existent, manufacturing needs to be returned to the UK to alleviate the problem and until it does, I for one, will not be purchasing anymore of their kits. Short mouldings, seen it all before on their kits, not fit for purpose..

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's certainly upsetting at times, which is a shame because some of their kits are rather good
