- The Folland Gnat was designed as a sub-sonic fighter aircraft, but would see use as a trainer and display aircraft by the RAF. It would go on to see fame as the Oscar EW-5894 Fallus Tactical Fighter Bomber as featured in the 1991 film Hot Shots!
Join me on the workbench as I build and review the Airfix Folland Gnat T.1 (A02105) plastic model kit in 1/72 scale, but painting it in the livery used during the film Hot Shots!

Very nice jet Folland Gnat T.1 from Airfix. I want this jet.
They had some in the UK in Aldi or Lidl recently
Great video, very informative
Glad it was helpful!
A lovely fictional scheme from Hot Shots, a 1991 film starring Charlie Sheen!
Is it truly fictional if real Gnats were painted in it?
@ModelMinutes I suppose that's true!
Yes! But rear seat position was blanked off. The Oscar EW 5894 is a single seat "tactical fighter bomber".
Thanks for the upload. I bought one as a result to have a go. Glad you got your Mojo back.
Thanks! I've got a couple more Gnats to do - but they will have to wait until 2025 I think
I need to get some more airfix 72 scale kits. Every one I've built has been a fun and quick project. 48 scale kits always give me AMS where i feel the need to add a ton of detail to it
these small and cheap kits are good fun!
I had no idea there was a modeling subject for Hot Shots. “The Navy” 😄 Oh your poor pilots! 😖
Nice build Matt. Thanks. 👍🏻
Thanks for watching!
Oh, they were Folland Gnats? In the pictures I see of the movie, I used to think they were A-4 Skyhawks but now that I looked more closely, yup, they were gnats all along.
Thank you Matt for this cheery video, it keeps my mojo going
Glad to hear it!
Fantastic build and a great wee mojo kit to tackle. This one is on my wish list, purely because it has the decals for the movie version (still laugh like a mad man when the plane ‘lands’ on the aircraft carrier deck!). A great way to end the year and looking forward to the next build! Merry Christmas!!
And to you!
Great writeup. I have almost completed one of these in the same scheme (a truly inspired decision by Airfix to include this - I wonder how many others bought one purely because of it?), and can confirm that the centre of gravity is already significantly forward of the aft landing gear so adding nose weight isn't necessary.
Must watch Hot Shots! again soon... There is a great video elsewhere on here of clips set to Highway to the Danger Zone 😂
Thanks for the info!
Nice simple build! "The Navy" 😂😂😂 Pilots: "My Legs!!!" watch that movie when i was little kid (watch it on tv) wow, Airfix really have it! 😎👍 Btw, merry Christmas! Greetings from 🇵🇭
And to you too!
Love it! Hot Shots is one of my favorite movies. Comedy and jets, what more could you ask for?
I've become a big fan of small what-if mojo projects. You can have some fun, no one can tell you 'that's not right' and you get something unique. I'm just finishing a 1/144 Pit-Road TSR2 in a 'Nevada' 1980s Su-24 aggressor scheme
Nice!
Nice mojo build.
This is exactly why I love airfix kits
Cheers
You and me both!
Nice little build and with these kits u can do what u like as they dont break the bank .
100%
Great result... Got a few of these kits, initially bought for a 'What If' build in Swedish markings and a couple of other projects, but as yet I haven't built any of them. This gave me some ideas of what to look out for and what to expect, so thanks for that! Also, the film is one of my favourite films and this actual version is one of the future projects planned.. :)
Sounds great!
Bravo, bravo. Very original idea.... Love this movie.... "the navy" 😂
Hey Matt, you should try to build the 1/72 scale An-225. That will give you a challenge.
That would certainly be a challenge 😂
I’m building it right now actually, I’m almost done. I’m just gluing in the engines and then it will be completed. I’ve been working on this for two months.
Nice looking build 👍
@@julianbye9066 thank you
Oh wait sorry wrong message
Cool 👍 I wish you a Merry Christmas. 🎄
Thanks! You too!
A classic build. I really ought to build another one.
Thanks!
Hi Mat....cracking little kit.....built a few of them but not this scheme......YET🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣......And a happy christmas to you and yours.
Thanks and kind regards,
Damien.🧖♂️🧖♂️🧖♂️@ModelMinutes
And to you!
@@ModelMinutes thank you,Mat👍
Sometimes i put either Autobot or decpticon factoon symbol stickers on my models yo maje them appear as Transformers disguised as aircraft@ModelMinutes
Nice work
Thank you! Cheers!
Good work on the "Phallus" 🤣
Thanks 🙏
Good build Matt.
Thanks!
Did Airfix actually supply decals for a Hotshots livery? Mad...
yes, it is part of this kit
@@Rich77UK yes, but Airfix did miss the NAVY text which should be above the port wing. Easy to find one though. I also blanked off the rear cockpit with a section of plastic card. It fits under the IP coaming and fits to the front of the rear seat. The Gnats in the film had this to give the impression of a single seater, but it was a removable item so the build here is not incorrect. Just a little detail I picked up from watching the film so much!
You might consider thinning your Gloss Varnish? We call that Dry as a Popcorn Fart! That's Painter talk! Looks Good
I have thinned it in other builds, but seeing as I wanted a matt finish in the end I'm not sure it matters so much
Hey matt, This is very cool i loved the movie hot shots. Just a question, why don't you do more Tamiya??
I'm trying to clear out my stash, I have a lot of Airfix and Revell but I do have some Tamiya kits to build in the future, the P51, Sptifire and a couple others
Can’t believe that Airfix included decals for this! Great choice for a mojo build. By the way, what do you do with an elephant with three balls?
Good question!
Wendy, I can fly!😂
lol
Nice one Matt, I was thinking, before you mentioned the parody film, that I didn't realise the US had bought Gnat!
I suppose it is part of the parody putting the "star and bar" on the top of the right wing. Normal US practice is top of left wing.
I bought one of these in Lidl a couple of weeks ago with just the RAF scheme but also paint and glue included. It was a little cheaper.
I think one in India scheme (they were customers) might look good.
Interesting!
I'm just wondering if you are going to build a A6M zero anytime soon?
I've got one in the stash to do - I have the paint and a canopy mask, just need the time
Tried the red and white version, couldn’t get the colours right so went for a yellow jacket style
Good choice!
Pity they didn't add a new piece to remove the second seat to make it more accurate.
I imagine that would have incurred more cost
Also in some sections of the film they are shown as twin seaters.
Who put that crab there?
😂
It's a pity that although Airfix provided the decals to build a 'Hot Shots' Gnat they didn't provide the bits to blank off the rear cockpit, in the movie they've been made to look like single seaters.
Yeah that was mentioned earlier, it would have incurred extra cost I imagine and seeing as I expect they already had to pay a licensing fee, designing, tooling and manufacturing a bespoke part for this very specific model (which not everyone would use anyway) was probably cost prohibiting
I feel these days that Airfix kits are a bit overpriced for the subjects they offer. I paid $58 Australian for the Chipmunk kit and I feel a bit cheated.
Converting the UK RRP to AUD should be no more than $50, and with special deals it is possible to get these kits cheaper at times. I have no doubt that import costs push the price up a bit sadly
