The Douglas Aircraft Company, Inc. presents The A4D “Skyhawk,” a late 1950s or early 1960s promotional/sales film on the production, maintenance, and features of the A4D Skyhawk (also known as the DA101). The film opens with a shot of a hawk perched on a rock, then of it flying through the air. Douglas A4D Skyhawks fly through the sky (00:48). The attack bombers sit idle at an airstrip (01:34). A Skyhawk lands on an aircraft carrier, carrying a large bomb. The film shows the design sketches of the Skyhawk (02:40). A man works on the aircraft’s fuselage (02:54). The film then shows the Skyhawk’s cockpit; men work on the construction of the cockpit (03:12). Footage shows the attaching of the plane’s wings and landing gear to the fuselage. A set of wings are lowered in a production warehouse (04:09). Viewers are shown the attachment hardware for carrying ordinance. The A4D is tested for landing gear retraction. Men lower the pilot seat into a Skyhawk’s cockpit (05:42); footage shows ejection testing of the seat. A Skyhawk is towed out of a hanger (06:11). The payload and weapons that can be used by the Skyhawk are laid out on the ground in front of the aircraft (06:40); the film then shows where the bombs, rockets, and guns go on the ship. A Skyhawk lands on a runway (07:37). Men attach a fuel tank underneath the Skyhawk. A Skyhawk refuels inflight behind a tanker aircraft (08:25). Four Skyhawks fly over coastal terrain. A graph shows the maintenance of the Skyhawk, which has a high operational time and a limited manpower requirement for maintenance. Men work on repairs of an A4D (10:50). A J-65 Turbojet Engine is fitted into the plane (11:37). Two A4Ds take off from a runway at an airstrip (13:22); a Skyhawk takes off from an aircraft carrier. Rockets are fired from an A4D (14:46). A Skyhawk maneuvers in the sky then delivers a payload on a target in a desert (15:11). The film ends with a montage of footage of the planes being produced at a production facility, lined up at an airstrip, flying over mountains, refueling, dropping payloads, taking off from aircraft carriers, and flying in formation.
The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk is a single seat subsonic carrier-capable attack aircraft developed for the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps in the early 1950s. The delta winged, single turbojet engined Skyhawk was designed and produced by Douglas Aircraft Company, and later by McDonnell Douglas. It was originally designated A4D under the U.S. Navy's pre-1962 designation system.

My re-enlistment bonus included a backseat ride in a TA-4J. That contingent on my "seat qual". I was active duty aircrew at the time and passed the "seat qaul" ...easy peasy (in and of itself, a great expereince).
The ride...I had the aircraft for a zero g aileron roll and a 6gish windup turn amongst other mis-neuavers. I was all over the sky LOL, loving all of it for the best part of an hour. The "Top Gun" Grad pilot gave me instructions and tolerated my shinanigans. Lifetime top experience...

My dad helped finish the XA2D-1 at Douglas El Segundo in 1954 then helped build the first YA2D-1 which was also "hand built" like the prototype. When the XA2D was lost in flight testing the first YA2D was used to complete the flight test program. After serving with the fleet for many years as an A4D-1/A-4A it is now part of the collection of the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola.

Quietly, a number of US Navy A-4 pilots briefed a few in the Royal Navy about the A-4s. Also the advantage of the Sea Harrier over the Mirage was largely due to the All Aspect AIM-9Lima. This aircraft was a powerful weapon in the hands of Argentina during the Malvinas battle (1982), by that time was an already outdated aircraft but in spite of that was able to put 1000 lbs bombs inside of british ships and send some of them to the bottom of the sea, in some cases cut in half. The bombs used were ground attack bombs unsuitable for the purpose so some of them didnt exploded due to problems with the fuse but still the A4 hit hard the colonial british fleet .
Is a amazingly small plane when you have the opportunity to see one; but a very powerful bird war.

You tried to take land and people by force and got kicked. So leave behind this craving and phantom imperial aspirations. Folklands is internationally recognized part of GB. Breaking soverein borders is against world order and international rules.

A-4 (at least the A-4E) could carry the B43 nuclear bomb with a maximum yield of 1 megaton. That's a strategic nuclear weapon. Tactical nuclear weapons are generally considered to be those with yields up to 50 kilotons. In 1965, an A-4E loaded with a B43 bomb fell off the USS Ticonderoga into 16,000 feet of water. The aircraft, pilot and weapon were never recovered (or at least that is the story).

Great Discussion. Dr. Bronk is very smart.
What about the AT-802U Sky Warden or the Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano for Ukraine? Ukraine is having to fly low to avoid radar, missiles, AAF and Russian tech already ( using many of the same aircraft as the Russians), might as well have an AC that can do that very well.... Both the Sky Warden and Super Tucano can carry decent payloads and fire modern weapons, for air to air, air to ground, close air support, electronic warfare etc. Much easier to train pilots and maintainers on and cheaper to maintain. There is no way Ukraine can afford to train, fly, maintain, and operate F-18's or F-16's... Let alone the time it would take to train and equip maintainers or even get logistics in order. Each of these can be equipped as basic as a recreational Cessna or as fancy as an A-10 when it comes to Avionics.

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes.
In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous TH-cam users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do.
