Letaba Rest Camp lies smack-bang in the centre of South Africa's Kruger National Park and, as far as Kruger accommodation goes, it's not necessarily the most popular rest camp in the park. The reason for this is because it's located in the heart of mopane veld - a vegetation type that's very dense and monotonous, which is not great for game viewing.
In fact, game viewing around Letaba Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park is so poor that I hardly ever do game drives when I visit Letaba. Why do I go at all then, you might wonder. Well, I go because the camp itself is actually very nice!
First of all, Letaba Rest Camp has a stunning view over the Letaba River. You can literally sit at the lovely restaurant, enjoying a cup of coffee or a burger, watching elephants and other game come down to drink below you.
Because it's so lush, Letaba also attracts loads of birds and I often find myself strolling through camp with a pair of binoculars, searching for bush-shrikes, parrots, wood-hoopoes and other awesome birds.
The highlight of Letaba, however, is the Gold Fields Environmental Education Centre behind reception, which features the Letaba Elephant Hall! Here you will find some of the biggest elephants tusks you've ever seen on display. They belong to some of the largest elephant bulls that historically called Kruger home, including six of the Magnificent Seven!
The museum is world class, with stunning displays and loads of interesting information all over the walls. It's definitely worth a visit, even if you're not actually staying at Letaba itself.
Speaking of which, I like to stay in either the riverside bungalows, which have a view over the Letaba River, or the safari tents near the campsite. The ones next to the pool can be a bit noisy if there are plenty of kids swimming. I also like the campsite, especially the stands on the western edge of the campsite.
Letaba Rest Camp also has a filling station and a temporary wooden shop was erected after the original one burnt down some years ago.
If game viewing is not your number one priority, and you're just looking for a beautiful camp with a great view in which to relax in the Kruger National Park, Letaba is the camp for you! And you love elephants, even better!

We just spent a night in Letaba, and it is by far my favourite camp! Added 17 bird sightings to our list, and thoroughly enjoyed the walks and close by hide and view points. We'll be back annually!!

I actually had one of my best game-viewing experiences just north of Letaba where well over 1,000 buffalo were running in a long column which stretched a few kilometers, to get to the Malopenyana waterhole. When they arrived, they drank it dry. It was an experience I've never had again and very memorable. It's always been one of my favorite camps, and the bridge at sunset is magical.

We've always been very lucky with amazing sightings at Letaba - we had lions on a giraffe kill 4 kms from camp for 3 days - night sounds were out of this world! Leopard hub of Kruger for me. Agree - sundowners on the bridge are a must.

One of our favourite camps 🤩🙌🏼 The birding in camp like you said is fantastic. Rikus and I camped there for a week just after we got married and we would have two or three Scopsies above our tent every evening 🤩 But on our last night a little boy came with his blue light torch and shone it in that tree 😐 It lit up like a Christmas tree with all the scorpions. Luckily it was on our last night 😂🙈
Amazing video as usual Villiers! Your videography is something we could only dream of. 🙏🏼

Great video but you need to come to Letaba with me and I'll show you some great sightings - seen countless leopards near Letaba, resident side-striped jackals, plentiful big game like Elephant and buffalo and not to mention good general game. I've seen dogs, plentiful hyena dens and lions in close proximity to camp. The secret is not to drive further than 10km from camp - all the game and predators congregate and live close to camp.

Are you talking about Letaba in the Kruger National Park? 🤔😂 I’m glad you’ve had so much luck there - that’s awesome! It just shows you - nature is full of surprises.

I love staying at Letaba as well - such a camp with a stunning view of the river. My other favourite camps are Satara, Olifants, Lower Sabie and Biyameti and quite recently Berg en Dal. Loved all the birds and very interesting Elephant Museum. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

This is like saffron and truffles all in one: a brick of gold. Such valuable information and coming from Australia I really appreciate the honesty you give in respect to sightings, time of the year to visit and best position for setting up camp 🏕🐆❤️

Great review, this is one camp/area I've seen a lot. One drive i saw two Leopards and two cheetahs all in 4 different sightings within an hour drive and it remains an area I've seen most Leopards in the park.

    Goed gaan
    Sieg & Runa

Uiteindelik het jy video oor Letaba! 🙌🏻.
Ek was op soek na video oor Letaba so 2 weke terug.
