life saver. the last time i called the lawn mower guy, i just had bad gas and he man-shamed me. i was happy to find this and I didn't even have to take the top cover off to access the gov spring.. THANK YOU!!

Thank you for this. I had this exact problem on the exact same engine, B&S 6.5. One day, for no reason I could determine, the RPMs were low. Just watched your video, went out there, removed the top cover, and sure enough the governor had gotten bumped. I made the adjustment, and it's back and working normally. My wife just said, "I don't know why people make these videos, but thank goodness they do." I appreciate you taking the time!

This video just spared a great running mower destined for the scrap yard! I've been pulling my hair out over this machine for a couple of weekends now. I went through everything! Then I found this video which immediately solved the problem! Now the mower is running better than before. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us and getting us out of a bind!

I bumped a power pole guide wire with the front of the Briggs and Stratton engine on my mower. the engine took a serious dive in RPM. i searched for an answer and came across this video. simple video, simple solution. that you very much...

thank you so much for posting this video! I bought an "All fixed up" used mower that worked once and kept stalling after that. I don't know much about motors but am pretty tool savy. After changing the oil, air filter, spark plug, and cleaning the carburater, I decided to watch some TH-cam videos. I quickly realized the piece of wire holding the linkage together was a poor fix for replacing a 30 cent spring. Fires right up and runs fantastic!

Thank you for this video. I put in a new governor spring and carburetor and it still wasn't wanting to get up to speed. You video showed me how the arm was bent. I adjusted it and WHIZ BANG it runs like a charm.
This is my very first small engine repair ever. Thanks for all the help!!!

Many thanks for this video. This was the second time my lawn mower (SABO 43-Compact with the 2.4kW B&S engine) revved down when I tried to cut the grass under a bush. First time I brought mine in for repairs. Thought I'd lost a regulator spring or something, never guessed that silly part was bent that easily. Adjusted, erm bent, until I got the right RPM by ear.

June 16, 2020 - same thing , ran under a bush and rpm dropped .
Looked with no luck ; found this video and tried again .
Found that same size spring , But the rest is different ; noticed the plate the spring is attached to was bent - straightened that back , and now it works ok .

I'd suggest also taking a piece of wire (like a coat hanger) and bending it a couple of times to hold the flimsey tab in place. can hook it to the thicker piece that it moves with it. takes all of 10 minutes and 3 cm of wire

I have this same engine on a 21" self-propelled Troybilt mower and it has impressed me for over 10 years now.
    Interesting question.
Anticipating the eventual replacement I was looking at new Toro mowers and a feature they have is that they stand it on the rear-end to conserve floor space. Toro touts the location of the fuel tank as making this possible.
Well looking at my Troybilt, the fuel tank on it is in the same place, the air filter, carb. and muffler are at the front of the machine and it seems to me that I could do the same thing with the mower I have.
Obviously neither Troybilt nor BS would ever recommend this. So the question is, can you think of a reason why a guy couldn't do this? Is there anything in the crankcase, etc. that would make this not-a-good-idea?
I thank you for your time and expertise.
    Jim

that covered it. all the stock adjustments. any more than that you'd have to change everything that is not worth it trouble or money for a little old push mower. this way and long as you change the oil and new plugs in it it should last longer than you.

Nice explanation however.......... my Toro Super Recycler has the B&S mechanical governor and it is idling way too fast. When I push in on the tension spring pawl in order to takes less spring pressure off, the idle stays the same, even with the spring loose! Any hints out there?

I've got a riding tractor whose governor spring us really loose with throttle in idle position and up to about half throttle, but then I see the spring starts to add resistance to the governor linkage from there up to full throttle. the tractor also seems to be slow flat out. should the governor spring have tension at throttle idle position?

i changed the carb diaphragm, air filter, spark plug, oil and gas. the cord was stuck was what prompted the repairs. the mower ran hard, but I was able to adjust the governer flap. it still ran a little hard, but i mowed anyway since my yard is small. one of the repair guys here on youtube made it sound like running a little hard is okay. when i turned it off after i quick cut my grass, it was smoking just a little. the next time i tried to mow, the mower wouldn't start at all. is it too late to have hope for it?

I've rebuilt a few push mowers. I have an 18 h.p. B&S. For no reason after changing the oil, my control level stopped working. The motor runs wide open no matter what I do with control lever. The governor is set right. The carburetor works fine, and I even went as far as pulling the crankcase to make sure the governor was good. It runs at 4200 r.p.m., and I can;t slow it down to 3600..............what did I miss? puzzled about this.

Hi Jeremy, I have to adjust a lever on top of the carburetor and the governor to get the mower running. Otherwise, the engine turns but starts to quickly die. I added more tension to the governor, but I still have to pull another lever in order to get it right. I cleaned the fuel filter, replaced the air filter and spark plug, but I still have to mess around with that particular lever. What should I do to get it back in normal mode?

I was given a 5 hp briggs powered lawn mower with no throttle adjustment because the previous owner let the gas go bad. After draining the bad gas, pulling the carb and spraying all the holes and orifices with carb cleaner, It runs. But it barely idled. I tightened that spring by attaching it to something a little further away (because mine doesn't move like the one in the video), but it's still slow. What's on the other end of that rod that the spring hooks to? Is there a way to adjust that end?
