My mower sat all winter with old gas in the tank. I changed out the fuel, but still got no start. I just followed along with the video and went through the process of cleaning out my carb. Amazing how simple it was. My mower runs great now. Thanks for the great breakdown!

This was an absolute pleasure to watch , learning from someone who clearly knows what they’re talking about .
I have this mower and have always been too worried about maintaining it further than sharpening the blade and checking the spark plug .
    Thank you .

My mower has been running bad for the past 2 years and this was my first time taking a carburetor apart. I was a little nervous but I followed all your steps and put it back together and it started first pull on the first start of the season. The only thing I recommend is at 9:46 I'm not sure if you mentioned it but there is a little metal disk that could fly out when you use compressed air. It flew out and my heart dropped but thankfully I found it. Thanks for the great video.

Fantastic video! I have reached the point where you lifted the petrol tank off. I noticed the carburettor linkage moves so freely it was hard to imagine it had a function.
I am now fairly confident I am going to find a broken spring under the pterol tank and that will be why my motor cut out. Bless you for taking the time to help us amateurs out.
I am now equipped to clean the carb should that be necessary. You have cheered me up so thank you.

A thought about a non-starting non-running B&S lawnmower. I recall that crankcase pressure is important in ensuring appropriate fuel supply via carburettor in a number of Briggs and Stratton engines.. That breather from the carbie to the crankcase would act to provide the pressure pulse from crankcase to carbie that enables the fuel to get into the combustion chamber. And another thought; if you leave the lawnmower out in the rain or even fog, expect moisture to get into the petrol tank and then into the float bowl, which will stop the fuel flow. It doesn't take much water to prevent running. Try add a bit of meths to the petrol tank as this may help as water and meths mix as do petrol and meths.

great job with the video i just picked up 4 of these lawn mowers a couple weeks ago from a guy that couldn't get them to work and he sold them to me for 5 dollars each so i said ill take them he even brought them to my house. they are like new and one of them was a big Honda self drive.. i paid 20 USD for the lot, but anyhow i was having the same issue on one of them and needed to see how the carburetor was attached..i knew it would be a simple fix but it was missing the filter cover so I'm having to buy a cover and a filter for the 450E.. which compared to what i paid for all 4 wont be much.. but I'm like you in that aspect of cleaning my mowers before i reattach the carburetors. Briggs & Stratton carburetors are easy to work on even the older ones are simple. they are basically the same they have a float and a jet needle. cleaning them is the key. you really helped me with this one.. thanks for being so concise ..greetings for mount Holly North Carolina..have a great weekend. Going out yard selling again tomorrow morning, and i hope i find some great things to bring home. take care and keep those great informative videos coming out..you helped me big time..Peace !

Very nice video BUT - when I removed the white plastic air inlet jet projecting from the side of the carb. I noticed that there was no hole at all in the end to let air in. You said that that this had to have a clear hole in it or the engine would not run. The mower runs but is hunting so I think it is the carb. I wonder if that is a rogue jet which was made without a hole- the plastic moulding with no hole makes it effectively a blank plug. Perhaps a later/earlier design? Thanks again for a great tutorial!

May I respectfully suggest that you consider using the compressor to blow off any loose debris much earlier in the process - perhaps as early as just before removing the carb assembly. Using a paper or cloth plug in the air intake should help with blown in internal contamination from the oily grass clippings.
when disassembling the float also consider popping loose both sides of the hinge pin - better control.

I believe the oily air filter comes, because when people try to clean the underneath after mowing, the flip the mower carburetor downwards which allows the oil to soak into the air filter. Only flip the mower spark plug downwards or carburettor upwards ;)

Its running a little rough so I am wondering if I have not cleaned something enough or if the old fuel which has been stored in a sealed can might be the cause?

Good video. I just bought an used one yesterday and clean it. I did pretty much what you did except I have not taken the carb apart but will now, thanks to your video. I have one question? I have what looks like an broken tube comeing out of my gas tank. I think it was barbed with a hose going to the air inlet on the barbed piece on the carb. I notice in your video you only had the air inlet piece on the carb. I put an hose going from the piece on the carb to the gas tank. There was no hose on it when I picked it up. Just figured maybe a hose went there. Not sure. Maybe you know and can let me know. I am still looking an parts list for this model. Thanks for any help. Good video.

Hello Mower Man , we have a very similar mower here in Australia. The million dollar question is ... how do you adjust the idle so it is not reving real high high before it cuts out with the kill switch ? My mower starts easy and revs right out , but the idle is a bit to high . It is a mechanical governor just like the one shown above. we both have throttles , but I think in USa they just have one speed. I do not want to go mucking around streching springs and such until i know what i am doing. cheers

    • @joesinakandid528
      @joesinakandid528 2 ปีที่แล้ว

G'Day Clem, May I suggest that IF your mower has a throttle adjustment screw that might be a start - otherwise the governor is under suspicion. Unhook the governor linkage and start the engine and see what the default is - full or idle.
Cleaning the carby with special attention to the white 3 tower "Cartridge" and it's removable center Emulsion Tube's tiny jets could also be of specific help. If the tiny holes have been roughly "cleaned" with wires or picks in the past they might well have been 'reamed' to an oversized diameter, passing much too much fuel and causing an over rev condition. If so, the internet is a grand source for replacement cartridges (or maybe even an inexpensive entire, new, carby.) Also - thoroughly check out the 'Automatic Choke' system and see if your version has an adjustable idle circuit.
I spent a month in Canberra with friends in '20 - excellent time. - Joe -
PS - US mowers use the smaller diameter split handle to retract (by cable) the kill switch - no over rev situation kill switch in our models.

My lawnmower I was given, wouldn't start, was full of old oil, which I drained and replaced, took out the sparkplug, cleaned it with a bit of fine paper, scrubbed it with an old toothbrush checked for a spark, was sparking ok, put some fresh petrol and it fired up, but it wasnt running very well, the auto valve was opening looking for more fuel,so I stripped the dellorto carb and cleaned it with the toothbrush in fresh petrol, put it back together and its running fine, ticking over nicely, didn't really know what I was doing, but over 35 years ago I taught myself to strip and build two stroke vespa engines, even though I havent touched an engine for 30 years the principles are the same I suppose, they both need a spark, fuel and air

Thanks for the vid. On the hole in the carb the the pumper bulb lines up with there appears to be a spring, should there be a ball bearing against the spring? The reason I ask is mine is blowing fuel out of the primer bulb when running and it leaks out when it in the garage.

Is there an easy way to make sure that white donut piece goes in with the holes down?? I’m not sure if that’s one of those things that if you aren’t constantly holding it while you are putting the main jet back in that it’s going to move out of alignment. I don’t want to have to fight with it to make sure that piece stays with the holes on the top. Great video

Great selection of videos - very informative and easy to follow. I have a Hayter 413H with a B&S 650 Ex Series Eco Plus Engine which has the classic hunting characteristic but only during initial operation - after 3-4 minutes of grass cutting, the engine runs very smoothly. Also the engine is sometimes difficult to restart after emptying the grass box. Are these symptoms of a carb overhaul needing to be done - I did dismantle the carb last year and couldn't find anything wrong but that was before I watched your videos....!!! Appreciate any comments. Keep up the good work making videos.

I second that. What kind of oil do you soak the foam filter in?

    • @JuiceBanger1

@@undrtow0515 just the engine oil. My 500e takes 470ml out of the 500ml bottle so there some left to do it. I have other bottles and motorbike oil too. Any will do.

But can only find parts online for the 450e.
I’m after a carby rebuild kit and new governor springs.
Do you know of the 450e parts will fit my 450?
    Thanks 🙏🏽

We have this exact model but in an effort to help my other half (he’s not been well) I’ve hit a hidden rock and now it won’t turnover. When I pull the pull start the blades turn, spark lead is definitely seated correctly and there’s plenty of fuel. I noticed when I hit the primer button, fuel was coming OUT of the little white air nozzle on the carb, so have I flooded it? Any suggestions on what else I should check?
All I’ve done is ADD jobs to his list instead of helping, so want to try to fix it myself if I can. Thank you!

It's a great video, though very sadly not for our model. We have a Gardenline (B&S engine) 575ex (Aldi purchase in 2015). Have you any video recommendations for the carburettor service for this model?

Australia here! Need advice Please. I have the exact mower but in blue and have had nothing but trouble with it. Am elderly female, living alone with zero funds for a new mower or repairman. A few years ago, trying to get the mower to start by accident chopped the tops of my fingers nearly off and they all had to be sewn back on, and since nothing but trouble. As it never starts a bloke told me to put a squirt of fuel down into the carburetor to help it start with the fuel lid off until the mower sparks up. I have done this for years to start the mower but it never has run smoothly (mower is about 3 years old when purchased new). Today when trying to start the mower, the hole damn thing went up in flames when trying to start it. I hosed it down getting water into the fuel tank and possibly the carburetor intake/hole. I bleed the fuel and put new fuel in and tried to start it again and the same thing happened with it going up in flames. QUESTION, if water got into the carburetor how can I fix it myself. Also with that air breather on the side (just above the fuel line), my mower has a small black hose, BUT it also seems to be some kind of switch that will slide left to right (back / forth). What is that about??? Why won't the mower start without much trouble and when running why is it not running smoothly? Quiet curious about the air breather and why it seems to have that switch and don't understand why, for what purpose? Why does my air breather have a black hose but int he video there is none?

    Hi
I have same machine and I didn’t use it for long time but yesterday I filled new oil and petrol and started.
It’s working but oil coming from engine to hose behind air filter and leaking.
Could you please tell me what is the problem
    Thanks

Nice video , but I drill that very bottom jet out to .025 with a # 72 drill bit and that will make it run better , more power and start first pull !!

Glad I found this film. Excellent instruction and even I feel reasonabley confident that I could do this. I have this engine on a Viking mower. It is prone to surging and back firing and it seems to be through the air filter. Could that be carburretor please? I am wondering if water could be getting in there now as it does get vaught by rain if I forget to put it in and the garden shed it sits in isn't the driest.
