    Nice Video , a lot of times I usually just cut the Governor or Idle spring to make it tighter instead of bending tabs. But that engine should definitely handle a Throttle around that range , especially by it being a Quantum

    toro with briggs and straton 190cc engine. It's the high wheel smart-stow model. Just put the tach on it tonight and it was spinning 2600 from the factor. It's a 22 inch mower so the sweet spot is 3300 rpm to get 19000 fpm. I set it at 3100/3200 and it seemed pretty happy there. Blade is sharpened and it's ready to cut tomorrow. Can't wait to see what the difference will be.

    Good video, thanks! I would have left it purring at 2600, but that's me. Here in FL we have a lot of trouble with dust and sand and I try to get a larger engine and run it as sllooooww as possible and still cut ok with a low lift blade. The governor should kick in and deliver the fuel to keep it powered in heavier grass (premium will help). Some mowers have a cable that goes to this adjustment with a slightly different bracket. There's a lot of used stuff (brackets) on ebay and a lot of the briggs stuff is interchangeable. The only thing it has to do is make a small amount of pull on that spring with a pivot arm. For the self propelled mowers, the wheel gear ratio is often fixed (some are variable) and you end up changing engine speed to get your walking speed. It's all stuff to consider when buying a mower. I've found that the Craftsman (Husquvarna,Poulan) gearboxes do well in a sandy environment and the Toro Recycler not so well due to the open bearing at the top under the gearbox pulley. I've misplaced my tach. I liked yours I'll probably pick up one of them. Good job.

    As soon as you started that motor, I thought yes it is too low like most manufacturer set them that way that one may be a tad lower than it is said at the factory, but why would you want it to run slower when it could run at 3200. It’s going to cut the grass so much better, cleaner and shoot it out the side or the back chute with much more force.

    How do you adjust the power or get more RPM on a 2019-2020 Toro SmartStow mower. I bought one 2yrs ago and sold it recently. It worked perfectly fine. The reason I sold it was because I was thinking of getting a battery powered mower. After I realized that battery powered mowers don’t give as good of lift on the grass I was upset I already sold my Toro SmartStow. So I had to buy a new one. I got the same model, so nothing was different at all. When I got it home and out of the box, I started it up and quickly could tell the mower sounded lower in power. I took it back and got another one thinking maybe something was wrong with previous one. When I got the second one home it sounded the same as the previous one. Not sure what Toto did but they obviously lowered the RPMs. I would like to get a little more power back in the mower. Are you able to help me with this? I have no understanding of all these moving parts. I did manage to take the cover off of it and move this flat disc or turn it and heard the mower get louder. So I am a handy person. Just not sure about all these moving parts and exactly what to do. The parts on my Toro is all configured differently compared to yours. Please let me know if there is a way we can talk. Thanks I really appreciate your video. Gives me hope that I can gain a bit more power out of my mower.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely it is slower. The government has passed laws over the years requiring that mowers not exceed a certain speed to help avoid injury. Toro sells mowers with Briggs, Kohler, Honda and in the past Tecumseh engines. All are a little different but most function in a similar manor. When the mower is off, there is a spring that pulls the throttle open. When you increase the tension on that spring the mower will go faster before leveling off. Be very careful. I have done work on a lot of equipment where people really messed up the linkage running from the governor to the carburetor to the point where the engine is screaming out of control fast or not maintaining speed under load. If unsure, it would be best to ask a local shop to adjust.

    • @carsutube
      @carsutube 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Condon Gotcha. Well you did it super easy so I expected it would not be that hard. Problem is I called a local shop and told them the difference with this mower compared to the one that’s exactly the same as this one and I asked them if there was anyway to adjust them. They said no there is only one speed. That was before I researched around on TH-cam. The reason I searched TH-cam was because I had a strong doubt that what he said was true and I was right. They can be adjusted. Anyway if your able to help that would be great if not I understand.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      carsutube can you send me the exact model number? It is usually on a white sticker sometimes under the rear flap where the grass catcher goes. Also the engine should have a separate model number somewhere. If you can provide those numbers I will take a look. Sometimes though it is hard to see how to adjust without having it in front of me, but they are all adjustable. Either a tab to bend or a screw that tightens which will increase the tension on the spring.

    • @carsutube
      @carsutube 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Condon absolutely. Mower model number is 20340 and the engine model# is: 104M020131F1. Personally I think the parts are so tucked under things compared to yours. It’s almost like they are trying to hide this stuff. I believe what I need to get to is under and Sorta behind the gas tank. Anyway I have a tachometer on the way in the mail. I wanted to get one so I can have it to get an accurate adjustment. This mower says it has a 2600rpm rating based on Toro’s website. I am 100% certain that the mower I had before this, that I owned for 2yrs (which is the exact same model as this newer one) was stronger and louder than this one. Anyway hope that info helped. Thanks for your help.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      carsutube ok thanks. Will take a look. FYI most engines are rated for 3600 rpm. My mower was at 2800 and that seemed slow to me. 3000 was better. Would not push much more. I think due to safety regulations the manufacturers have had to set the speed slower and slower over the years. Also I found that the drive wheels where spinning too fast for me at 3200 rpm. Was probably geared with new slower regulations in mind. I could not keep up with the wheel speed.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      norge696 yes. The engine is rated for 3600. The issue is more that regulations require mowers be set slower. It varies depending on where you live and has gone down over the years. So a new mower might be set to 2800 rpm where a mower that is 10 years old may have been set at 3200.

If the OEM specifies for the engine -- say, 3250 RPM -- then it should be adjusted to no higher than that.

      Just got a new mower this spring and it has a Briggs & ScrapIron 550EX running kinda slow. My research indicates the factory setting is 2600 RPM based upon the max torque and the publication allows 3100 as the max speed. I set it up by sound and suspected it was a little fast, the Tach showed 3400 and I set it down to 3140 with no load. It was also discovered the factory assembly had adjustment problems with the armature air gap scraping the flywheel due to factory workers whom are careless and don't take pride in their work.. I just need the mower to chop up the grass and not bog down due to low RPM as it was straight from the store.
