30:03 i think on your pc you forgot to turn on HDR lighting. which does not work together with anti aliasing, so its either or, and you probably made sure to turn on AA (although its not needed for 4k) so HDR was switched off. If HDR was switched on, the PC footage would have looked just as nicely lit and colourful as the console footage to its left.
Yes, you're right. I have footage of me setting it up on PC. HDR was off as I had it in 8xAA ... and of course playing it at native 4K on a 4K monitor kinda negates the need for that. I know you can enable AA via the nvidia console instead and keep HDR on but i left the console alone as I wanted it as 'vanilla' as possible. Thanks. Lesson learned.
Thanks for having a look. The fps number displayed is taken from the vertical line in the middle of the graph, so it looks to me like the NPCs have left the gate by the time the dips appear (at least some of the time). There is also a hint that these dips are present on the graphs for the ride around the lake, at least for the Series S and X... though there are other things going on in this example to make it harder to be sure. Cheers.
Very interesting video, but at the end you also could have put a video of oblivion with enb and distant LOD, so that we could have seen the absoluty peak that is possible with oblivion :)
I did think about it 😁 I collected some footage of my modded Oblivion setup (though this one does not have ENB) which would have visually blown all other footage out of the water... but that wasn't the point of the video so I left it. Cheers!
I bought the collector's edition of Oblivion when it came out. It was simple and came with a map, the pocket guide to the empire, and an Imperial Septum - a coin. I still have all of it. The Imperial Septum has been sitting on my desk since the day I got it. It looks old and worn now, like a coin should as I stare at it in my hand now. :) I enjoyed Oblivion, but it was a let down from Morrowind which is peak beth in my book. Still fun though, especially after the total overhaul mods came out.
Yes, that PC version i held up in the video is the collectors edition. I also still have my Septim... its been living in my D&D dice bag for maybe 15 years now. Good roleplaying prop!
Oblivion brings back memory's. On my thief character I filled the imperial waterfront house with loot. I mean literally. It was 7 feet deep of Glass, Daedric items. Gold rings jewels you name it. Took like 2 minutes of loading just to go in and out.

I had heard something about Skyblivion but not really looked in to it until I put this video out. A couple of others also mentioned it. I’m interested. I just hope they don’t get overtaken by the (rumoured) remaster. Of course Skyblivion may end up looking / playing better than a remaster, which would not look good for Bethesda. I only mention this as a bunch of remasters in the last few years have been rush-job cash-grabs. Hope we don’t see the same here. Cheers!

It's hard to believe that my favorite game is getting 2 remasters😮😮 🎉 I can't wait for them to release.... It's my Skyrim and I can't wait to see what they come up with!!!
Do you have a preferred platform to play it on? I'd be keen to hear. NB: Bethesda has not confirmed the remaster for Oblivion. That doc i showed was from 2020, before Bethesda was bought by Microsoft. It is quite possible MS cancelled it. Bethesda said they'd have a next-gen console patch for Fallout 4 by the end of 2023 but that's been delayed until this year. My guess is, if there's an Oblivion Remaster, it will be announced after the Fallout 4 next-gen patch drops. Cheers!
This video hit me on the nostalgia, I remember when I watched comparison videos on YT wishing I had a computer strong enough to run Oblivion with max graphics settings.
Great video. As a long time big fan of Oblivion who does not currently own a Series X it was great to see the differences. Looking forward to enjoying it enhanced one day. For the pc version, its fairly well known, but the lighting is better on the xbox. It comes across less bright and 'alive'. The footage you provided does a good job at showcasing that side by side
Thanks. Yes, the PC version seemed different in more ways than just rez. I know the FOV is a little wider... which made it hard to do easy comparisons with xbox!!
Very quality video for such a small channel. Pretty much Digital Foundry quality. I just put my old 360 disc into my Series X and enjoyed the game. I have it on PC as well both physically and on Steam but there is something about playing on console that feels more relaxing. Also it looks great on my OLED TV. I’m glad we have this enhanced version on Series consoles.
Thanks. Sounds similar to me. I do play it on PC but there is something relaxing about just loading it up on the xbox and sitting on the couch. Cheers!

I bought Oblivion when it came out for the 360 and loved it! How the game ran and looked was never an issue for me lol! I hopped on and tried playing it again on my 360 years later and I couldn’t even get into it again because of the frame rate. Playing oblivion on my Xbox series x has been so fun. The game looks incredible still. Cheers mate. Loved the video
Yes, the difference is crazy. Just today i ran Oblivion on my PS3 to see how it runs and without doing any testing can tell it is probably doing only 20-25 fps during the intro sewers. Bit hard to play tbh.
@@ramnexusOblivion, and Skyrim, on the PS3 are unplayable now and even the 360 version is borderline at best which is funny considering just how much better received it was on 360 compared to PS3. I was a PS3 owner but thankfully skipped the PS3 port because I also had a PC for gaming and used oblivion as a reason to talk my parents into getting a new video card just to play oblivion. Speaking of the PC version it really isn't surprising that Oblivion runs flawlessly on Windows 11. Its 32-bit which means the modern 64-bit windows still supports it and Windows has gotten pretty good at having multiple versions of DirectX for specific apps. People like to talk trash about Windows 11 but I've had zero issues with it playing older games as long as they're not 16-bit.
you can switch modes in-game. Just hold down both View and Menu buttons together and this will bring up the old style Blade 360 interface. Here you can switch between Performance vs Quality mode.

Fallout 3 looks amazing on the Steam Deck, those old Bethesda games have a ton of detail when you have the hardware to push them. Fallout 3 was the first game I wanted to play in 4K when I got my first 4K monitor years ago.
Would not surprise me. Baurus has a lot to answer for! I took a screen-shot of his face just after the Emperor had been assassinated and it is the face of a man who knew he had one job and blew it!! 😂 Cheers.
Shout out to Jeremy Soule for tying the whole package together, I hope the "controversy" has been resolved for the next game, but hoping Bethesda can do it justice as Starfield was so shallow. Also, great content by the way.
Hearing that first musical score took me back. My first play through of this game was nothing short of a magical experience for me. I also recall the XBOX360 version had HDR lighting.
I know the PC version has HDR as an option. But if it is on the Xbox version then it’s always on as there’s no toggle option. it’s not the HDR as we know it today on modern TVs and monitors though. Same name but different effect: it was a way of mimicking what our eyes do when we move from dark to light areas, slowly adjusting. Cheers!
Loved Oblivion, played it on PC mostly but I happen to still have a working XBox 360, an XBox One, an XBox Series X and at least one PC whose specs are (mostly) on par with yours so your video was a lot of fun to watch. Great job! First time seeing your channel, liked, subbed. Cheers!
When Oblivion came out, the whole family played it for 2 1/2 years. I am disappointed in you though for joining the Dark Brotherhood instead of just killing the emissary.
I have been telling everyone this bro. My best friend in the entire world became my friend because I asked for a ride to GameStop for a new copy of oblivion been 14 years now and I still love this game more than any other ever made
Appreciate the video. I have a Series S and I keep more old games on it than new. This is one of those games that is still fun after all of these years with a system that can finally keep up (with a 17 year old game..).
Same. My Series S has mainly older back-compat games on it. I was quite impressed with the performance of the Series S, and a bit disappointed with the Series X tbh.
I own this game on steam. I want to play using a gamepad but the community template for it doesn’t seem right. Anyone else know what I’m talking about??
I don’t think there is any steam gamepad support for oblivion. There is a mod that allows controller support called ‘NorthernUI’. But I think it requires Steam controller support to be disabled (just check with the mod install readme).
There is some community template or something. It’s not official controller support but it’s something. It’s just kinda wonky. I’m playing on a legion go so using keyboard and mouse isn’t really an option.
Still play oblivion to this day, I got it when it first came out. It’s the game I can always come back to no matter what. It will always be my favorite Elder scrolls.
I only discovered your channel recently, but I've subbed & really enjoyed watching your videos showing how Skyrim & Oblivion etc have improved over the years! Really nice chill videos haha. I genuinely appreciate the feedback. Can you give me specifics so i can sound like i know what I'm talking about in the future. Which results are you referring to? One X or Series X? Thanks!
Awesome. Great to hear. Thanks. I’m gonna run out of Bethesda games soon so might need to branch out. Let me know if you have any game suggestions. Cheers!

What are you interested in yourself? Consoles only or PC as well?

So you got me thinking of NWN 1 & 2 and how they were received and improved over time. I played them a bunch. Both consoles and PC. If the game is on both then a comparison may make for a more interesting story. Thanks for the suggestions. Cheers!
Welcome fellow-scientist (and Bethesda fan)! I use TRDrop, a free tool that measures frame-rate, frame-timing and screen-tearing. It produces a visual output and also allows the option to generate a csv file of key variables over time. I used the csv data to make the (fairly basic) excel 'FPS over a minute' charts. I didn't show it but i ran some descriptive stats of the csv results to look for differences in standard deviation when the mean FPS of different consoles were similar for the same test. I occasionally mentioned this as 'x varied more than y'. TRDrop is a useful but a very 'particular' program. It is in beta but has not been updated in a couple of years. Works best when video is lossless (so lots of HDD space needed!) and even then it falls over if you record a 30fps game at 60 fps - even though it says it shouldn't - I even made a video on that last point when analysing Skyrim with the fps cap lifted. If you give TRDrop a try and have issues let me know, I may have encountered them too. Cheers!

I presume at this point they must have a team of developers dedicated to backwards compatibility/ remastering. Thank you again!
I imagine (hope!) they do have people working on a remastered Oblivion and/or Fallout 3... though they may sub-contract such work out. I was a little surprised to read that it was actually Microsoft that did most of the work to make Oblivion, Fallout 3 etc backwards compatible, not Bethesda. The new news of interest is the upcoming "PlayStation 5 Pro" which will allow older games to more easily use the PS5's enhanced features... but in this case it *will* require the developers to update their games - if they choose. Glad you like the vids. Making them is a hobby for me, I'm not trying to make a living out of it, which may explain the slower pace. I can't imagine the stress of relying on YT to make a living; my Oblivion vid has 120K views (which is very awesome and humbling) but the next vid I put up has only 380. I've lost count of how many playthroughs of this masterpiece I've done. Definitely one of my favorite games of all time.
Your voice sounds like an Oblivion character. And I mean that in the best way possible.
I'll sub. Just the first 30 seconds showed enough info with that side by side picture. You a champion man. Thank you. Even though I didn't need to watch the whole video. I still did. 🍻
Awesome. Thanks heaps. Yes, that transition says it all really.
@ramnexus I also never really played much Oblivion but now installed it and gona play it. Got XSX so... 🍻
Got a series S 2 years ago, 1st game I tossed in was dragon age origins. '09 release.
Couldn't believe the boost.
Wish they'd remaster that game, along with KOTOR
That music makes my heart melt
And You have excellent delivery, very pleasant :)
25:40 is the NPCs loading in causing the dip? It looked like once the first one starts loading in the dip occurs.
Cheers!
you have mastered the elderscrolls trait in life
I bought the collector's edition of Oblivion when it came out. It was simple and came with a map, the pocket guide to the empire, and an Imperial Septum - a coin. I still have all of it. The Imperial Septum has been sitting on my desk since the day I got it. It looks old and worn now, like a coin should as I stare at it in my hand now. :)
I enjoyed Oblivion, but it was a let down from Morrowind which is peak beth in my book. Still fun though, especially after the total overhaul mods came out.
OOO and MMM, mods were awesome back then as well
Yes, that PC version i held up in the video is the collectors edition. I also still have my Septim... its been living in my D&D dice bag for maybe 15 years now. Good roleplaying prop!
There's a charm to the setting of Cyrodiil that I have always loved and continue to love from 2006 to now.
Really good quality video, well made and a likeable person with a calming voice. Hope you get a lot more subs. 👍🏼
Thank you very much for that. Yes, it seems I'm not the only person who likes Oblivion :)
Oblivion will always be my top 3 if not favourite games, always takes me back to being 9 and playing it for the first time!
Nice video bro you put a lot of work in it
Thanks. It was fun putting it together. Cheers!
Oblivion brings back memory's. On my thief character I filled the imperial waterfront house with loot. I mean literally. It was 7 feet deep of Glass, Daedric items. Gold rings jewels you name it. Took like 2 minutes of loading just to go in and out.
lol! Nice.
Love your calm way of just stting down and having a chat, looking forward to more of this! :)
Thanks. Yes, one of my long-time friends said that an earlier video I made was most interesting when I was just chatting, like one of my mates was in the room. So I’ve focussed on that. Cheers!
@@ramnexus good call of that friend! hope more people find their way to this channel, you seem very passionate and like someone that genuinely wants to talk to the community, not just at them. cheers!
You might already heard about it, but there is a modding team making a mod called Skyblivion. Basically remaking Oblivion with the Skyrim engine .
Cheers!
Well i know what i will be getting on steam next, missed the sale dang.
Goddamn dude! I am now dl it on steam and have gotta replay. Good vid. Ty
Good to hear. Enjoy! Cheers.
Oblivion is my favorite game of all time! I have thousands of hours acrossed Xbox 360, Xbox one, Xbox series X/S and now PC. I have replayed and replayed the games countless times and I still get excited when I start a new playthrough!
Been player Oblivion on Xbox one x for a long time already verry neat indeed in 4k
Bethesda pre-ESG scores made the best games.
This is such a fantastic quality video. I’ve subscribed. :) again, amazing work!!
Thanks for saying so, and thanks for the sub! Cheers!!
Cheers!
Best retro game. Brings back many dreams
Nice work mate. Really interesting to see the comparison as someone who's a PC convert and totally out of the loop with the newer Xboxes.
Always respect the love for Oblivion
I’ve been working for years when I can find time to perfectly level my character. Oblivion is a great game. And where else do you get to hear Patrick Stewart so perfectly set up the story?
I agree! Actually, an early edit of this video started with Patrick Stewart's voice-over during the intro. He just set the tone for the whole main quest so well. Cheers!
Amazing video! so much information and now I need to play Oblivion and Fallout 3 and New Vegas on my Series X! earned a sub :)
Excellent! Thanks for the sub.
Yes, although I first played those 3 games on PC I went thru and played them again on Xbox Series X and had a ball!
Excellent video, great format and can't believe it was 30 minutes long, time flew past haha
Oh wow. Thanks for the nice feedback. Cheers!
Just wanted to say, I enjoyed this clip! Oblivion 360 and PC. Played 100’s of hrs on both systems. Never finished the game… lol
Didn’t know you are just the grunt in the background helping the saviour hahaha! Man I was young though when it came out. Still one of my favourites. F3 right nxt to it. Couldn’t put one down without playing the other! You gained a sub. Well edited content thank you.
Glad you liked it. Thanks very much for saying so and thanks heaps for the sub. I'm sure there are quests and dungeons in Cyrodiil I still haven't found... so I don't think I've really finished the game 😀 Cheers!
My favorite thing, is the 2-3 second load times! It's the smoothest Oblivion experience.
Love the video dude!! Also love the insane book collection you have. What a collection. I've subscribed for future content. Keep it up man !
Awesome. Appreciated. This is the first video I’ve recorded myself in 4K and I realised it meant all the book spines can probably be read now!!
This video was so good dude
Good stuff, dude, subscribed.
this video is great, definitely gonna sub
Awesome! Thanks!!
you can switch modes in-game. Just hold down both View and Menu buttons together and this will bring up the old style Blade 360 interface. Here you can switch between Performance vs Quality mode.
Agreed. See 18:53
Fantastic analysis, really enjoyed it.
Much appreciated! Cheers.
oblivion looks great on my new pc too, its a great looking game despite its age. The NPC faces is when you realize it was made in 2006.
Yes, I agree. Those faces! We can improve resolution and framerate all we like but those faces will forever remind us it is a 2006 game! 😂
Great content my man
:) Thanks for that. I appreciate it. Cheers!
Very nice video! Always good to see someone expressing their appreciation for the GOAT Oblivion. The chapter markers are useful! Thank you, I just subscribed!
Awesome! Thanks for saying so, and thanks for subscribing. FYI I am looking at making a follow-on Oblivion video. Won’t be out soon but I was planning it last night. Cheers!
great information in this video
Bro that was awesome thank you
Awesome. Glad you liked it. Cheers!
This was a perfect breakdown. Thank you. Super entertaining
Glad you liked it. Thanks for saying so. Cheers!
Great video - thanks for all the work and care you've clearly poured into it!
Thanks very much for saying so. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Great video✊️
Oblivion would look amazing on a modern toaster
I’ll give it a shot on my SeriesX
Do it, do it, do it!! :)
Have you seen the Skyblivion mod?
Heard of it and will try it as some point. I hear it looks great and heaps of work went in to it. Should be good.
I played the game two years before on Series S. It was great, I just noticed there were some objects popping in the distance.
Fallout 3 looks amazing on the Steam Deck, those old Bethesda games have a ton of detail when you have the hardware to push them. Fallout 3 was the first game I wanted to play in 4K when I got my first 4K monitor years ago.
25:33 I have a sneaking suspicion that Baurus is responsible for the dips
Would not surprise me. Baurus has a lot to answer for!
I took a screen-shot of his face just after the Emperor had been assassinated and it is the face of a man who knew he had one job and blew it!! 😂 Cheers.
Neat work here man, thanks for making this.
I'm playing thru it again on regular old xbone and it's really nice looking on there too😊
I agree, that extra power in the Xbox One (compared to the 360) can really help. Cheers!
I started replaying Oblivion a few days ago, and it's one of the very few rare times I've fallen in love again with a game
Shout out to Jeremy Soule for tying the whole package together, I hope the "controversy" has been resolved for the next game, but hoping Bethesda can do it justice as Starfield was so shallow.
Also, great content by the way.
Thanks! Yes, I agree the music helped make the game... maybe even more so for Skyrim. That Oblivion intro music is burned into my brain!
ah Oblivion, the glory days of gaming for me. has it really been 17 years? im getting old :( good vid.
Glorious indeed. I literally had to look up and confirm the release date - I couldn't believe it'd been so long. Cheers!
Cheers!
This video is actually incredible!! I loved it
Thanks for saying so! Cheers.
It’s on sale for 3 bucks right now. Just bought for my Series X. Subscribed!
Awesome. You can't go wrong at that price! Thanks for the sub! Cheers.
Hmmm. Can I get these textures for PC version?
I really do hope that Oblivion remaster is still in the works. The game still has a unique charm to it, but it can look pretty potato at times xD
Great video man. Loving these!
Cheers!
Thanks for that! Sounds like you could have “played along” with the video :) Cheers!
When Oblivion came out, the whole family played it for 2 1/2 years. I am disappointed in you though for joining the Dark Brotherhood instead of just killing the emissary.
I have been telling everyone this bro. My best friend in the entire world became my friend because I asked for a ride to GameStop for a new copy of oblivion been 14 years now and I still love this game more than any other ever made
Great video
Subed keep up the good work man
Awesome. Thanks for that!
@@sirownzalotgaming3025 The mod i mentioned it a bit wonky as well. After playing it so much on Xbox I kinda want to use a controller for PC now too!
For me my comfort game has to be Skyrim, it has been probably for about 9 years now, the amount of times I've played it & fallen asleep to it is silly at this point, but so nice hahaha! Keep up the good work man!
Thanks. Yes, Skyrim is my switch-off game too. Sometimes on PC and sometimes on Xbox. Just depends on the mood! Thanks for the sub! Cheers.
Its not limited by memory, its limited by architectural differences and software layers. Thats the entire reason its running like that on X.
I genuinely appreciate the feedback. Can you give me specifics so i can sound like i know what I'm talking about in the future. Which results are you referring to? One X or Series X? Thanks!
As long as they remake Morrowind first I´m ok with Oblivion :P
The Hero of Kvatch!
Yes, Hero of Kvatch but only Executive Assistant to the Hero of Cyrodiil 😁
Amazing video! Thanks a lot!
Discovered your channel through this video, and I'm very happy I did.
Great content and a lot of nostalgia. Looking forward to more content from you 👍
Awesome. Great to hear. Thanks. I’m gonna run out of Bethesda games soon so might need to branch out. Let me know if you have any game suggestions. Cheers!
@ramnexus I think there are so many great old titles for you to explore - from Bethesda, morrowind and new Vegas
Legacy of kain series
Gothic 1,2
Neverwinter series
Deus ex
Baldurs Gate
Turok
Quake and Doom
Generally there are a lot of old school titles.
What are you interested in yourself? Consoles only or PC as well?
I think one thing I can bring to YT is the analysis tools… and I spend a lot of time doing background research on the game. So you got me thinking of NWN 1 & 2 and how they were received and improved over time. I played them a bunch.
Both consoles and PC. If the game is on both then a comparison may make for a more interesting story.
Thanks for the suggestions. Cheers!
I love your analysis. I’m a data scientist and fellow Bethesda fan - what tools are you using to track and capture your analysis?
Cheers!

well met traveler! as a 30yr old in finance ds I’m always hopping from one crisis deliverable to another and your calm, thoughtful, and thorough analysis is a reminder that not everything has to be a grind - thank you!
I must ask though..have you received any interesting (presumably anecdotal or 2nd hand - but you never know!) operational/ design insights on Bethesda from the inside?
Such is life as a youtuber... we are at the mercy of the Algorithm faeries :)
