  • In this video we look at how Skyrim's graphics and performance have evolved since its release in 2011 - with a focus on next gen consoles.
    This video is part of a small series called The Evolution of Skyrim's Graphics. In Part 1 I focused on the initial consoles and PC release. It contains a bunch of interesting details not found in this video. Find Part 1 here: • The Evolution of Skyri...

      PS3 version looked way more washed out and blurry than the 360 version. Not to mention when actually playing the game the framerate was almost always below 30fps, we're talking Nintendo 64 types of bad framerate@@andykod77

      PS4/Pro versions look good but natively only run at 30fps. There is a mod for PS4 and PS4 Pro to unlock the framerate so that it runs up to 60fps but both PS4/PS4 Pro struggle mightily to come anywhere close to a steady 60fps and the framerate is usually in the upper 30's. Best thing as far as consoles go is to just play the PS5 version which runs natively at 2160p resolution and a mostly steady 60fps. The PS3 version has no reason to exist anymore and looked like dog poop even back in 2011.@@midnightblue3285

    Skyrim SE also used the updated Creation Engine used in the development of Fallout 4. The most notable improvement is the switch from 32-bit to 64-bit, which on consoles didn’t make much of a difference. On PC however, the amount of actors you could have on screen was vastly increased, and the overall stability of the game was improved. This allowed modders to create considerably more resource intensive content without worrying about memory related crashes and sluggish performance.

    • @ramnexus
      @ramnexus  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's interesting, thanks. I talked briefly about SSE on PC in the Part 1 video but I edited out a section where I was going to mention the move from 32 to 64-bit because tbh I didn't understand the impact of that change. But you've just explained it to me, so thanks. Awesome!😁 I did hear the change made some OG Skyrim mods incompatible, but i believe most/all the popular mods were moved over to SSE eventually.

    No matter what you game on there's always going to be something good to play. For me time is a factor being I just turned 47 yrs old. I've been playing games on everything since early 80's. If you're under 30 yrs. old you got a life time for the Matrix gaming to be a reality. For me I've been waiting 40 yrs. to have my Matrix. So far we are only at the baby stage. Games like Skyrim/Fallout/Starfield/Red Dead 2/Witcher 3/State of Decay 3/Mass Effect 4/Dragon's Dogma 2/etc. give me hope. As a kid in the 80's I'd watch Empire Strikes Back then stare at my Sega Master System only to ask, "Can you do that ?" Phantasy Star is the best I had now Starfield. It's improving folks. I only have 30 yrs. of gaming left so I'm hoping my fantasy worlds become a reality. You never really age, only body wise.

    Don't know if anyone has mentioned it but at 8:00 the reason you move at different speed is that it's based on the average height of a race. High elves being the tallest move fastest, wood elves being smallest (iirc) move the slowest. Orcs are actually second tallest so the difference shouldn't be too huge.
    The issue with console versions is that getting identical weather/lighting is near impossible. Getting the same weather at the same location and the same time of day is really tricky.
    Few suggestions you could try in the future:
    There are some abilities you can obtain to manipulate weather, for example the "clear skies" shout or Auriels Bow from the Dawnguard DLC
    I'm not so sure about this but starting a new game should at least have the same weather right then and there and maybe there are some scripted quests where the weather is set to something specific so you'd only have to get the daytime identical.
    Other than that interior levels should have mostly static lighting.

    • @ramnexus
      @ramnexus  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for leaving this comment. It is really helpful. I was not aware of the height difference impacting speed... it does make sense. If I'd known I could have saved 1 kid the mental anguish of seeing a 1/2 naked orc warrior!
      I tell ya, I learned so much whilst collecting those screenshots from different consoles I could fill a whole new video - though I think only you and I would watch it :)
      I did mention in the video I remembered about the clear sky shout only *after* i finished collecting the shots. Good point re Auriel's Bow. Didn't think of that.
      Interestingly, for most door transitions to outside and fast travel locations you do not end up looking out over a vista. e.g. leaving the keep at Markarth you are facing a huge pillar, not the city you know is spread out below you. Bethesda obviously did this to reduce the graphics load, and hence load times, but it made it hard to find a good place where there was a mix of close-in, middle and distant objects. Shaw's Hold (?) was a good exception.
      Exactly as you say, the first shot of escaping Helgen (or "Just Leaving Helgen" as it is named in my files) is the one consistent time/weather save point for all systems. I gotta say though unfortunately it didn't make for a profound comparison shot. I think maybe because it was a very well manicured vista.
      I did some interior shots not included in the video, including the Riverwood Trader, but a fireplace produces an ever-changing light source, so shadows differed between shots - and such differences are what the eye notices first, not texture quality or resolution (IMO).
      So overall, it was a long process to get those shots, but in the process I learned some more about the work that went in to make the game. Cheers!

    Your character can run faster or slower if you're wearing either heavy armor or light armor. I think there's a perk for heavy armor that lets you run just as fast when you wear light armor, forgot the perk name. I know someone in comments said it has to do with what race you pick, but it has to do with heavy/light armor you wear not race height.

    It'll be interesting to see when the PS5 Pro is released at the end of 2024/early 2025 if Bethesda releases a PS5 Pro upgrade patch for Skyrim.
    If so I'm not expecting any graphical enhancements to be implemented (there's nothing else to do until the game gets a new edition which is almost certain to happen one of these years, likely adding ray-tracing), but rather that the patch will just have Skyrim on PS5 take full advantage of the PS5 Pro hardware improvements to alleviate the framerate from dropping below 60fps.
    PS5 Pro reportedly has a pretty decent increase in memory bandwidth so that should stabilize the framerate from dropping when alpha effects are filling the screen or casting certain spells.
    Also, anti-aliasing was a huge upgrade for Special Edition on consoles.

    • @drlight6677
      @drlight6677 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I should mention too that game stability was a major upgrade too, as PS3/360 had major freezing/crashing issues. Special Edition/Anniversary Edition now running at 64-bit from 32-bit, game stability is top notch now, not just with use of mods but for the game as it is normally without mods. The game is so well polished now and stable.

      Yes, looking forward to see what the PS5 can do! FYI I recently measured frame-rate for Skyrim PS5 (see my latest vid) and it is a solid 60, with only the rarest of dips at times I don’t think we’d notice. As I recall this is an improvement on when it was first released as a native PS5 game.

    Mods sometimes not always subtract, like some high res or redone textures are not better than the original. But there are some mods that do make a substantial difference, increasing LOD with that engine is one, better mesh also, and one that really helps hidding the poor LOD is bigger trees. But why play skyrim when you can play something way more engaging like BG3 is beyond me.

      @ramnexus  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree that some mods which try to improve graphics actually don't make the game look better, though that is down to personal preference i guess. I like your idea of using bigger trees to hide poor LOD. I've not thought of that before.
      BG3 is great, but a very different type of game - each to their own :) Cheers!

    I don't usually comment on TH-cam videos, but I just wanted to say that this was a really nice, chill, well informed video.
    I remember 12 year old me, launching up Skyrim for the first time. To say that my world was changed, might even be an understatement. Never had I experienced such an immersive world, full of this calm beauty and serenity (and vampires and demons but let's look past that ha). It made my life more bearable, and gave me a bit of an escape from bullying. Skyrim will forever have a special place in my heart. But enough about me.
    This was a really good video, and I have liked and subscribed. Will you be checking out Starfield? It could be pretty cool to watch some videos with you about Starfield. I'm very much looking forward to that game. Anyways, I hope everything goes well with the channel - I'm definitely interested in watching more!

      I think "calm beauty and serenity" is a really good description, and I laughed when you mentioned vampires too! I really appreciate your post. Feedback like yours is very motivating. As for Starfield - yes I plan to buy it on PC and d/load the Xbox GamePass version. Maybe a 1st impressions vid or an initial PC/Xbox comparison. I am conscious there will be many YT videos about it so I am trying to think of a topic which will "add to the conversation" (as they say). Cheers!

    The thing about mods on consoles, is those of you achievement hunting, using mods cancels any progress........ Though it does warn you in very small print, my poor pal played over 10 hours and asked ''what the hell do you have to do too get a bloody achievement''.
    We soon established he was using mods, therefore, no achievements/trophies.

      Good point. I missed that message too and it took me a while to work it out. It is also true for the Steam version on PC. I played my 'completion' game last year with no mods to get all the achievements, so it is now nice to be able to play with additional visual, gameplay tweaks.

    • @ramnexus
      @ramnexus  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Howdy @0carlitos099 Yes, both Dawnguard and Dragonborn are (in my opinion) very good but Hearthfire is only so-so, being primarily a house construction DLC. Dawnguard takes place in Skyrim so I assumed it was just extra quests, but there's a lot more to it than that. Dragonborn takes place on an island off the coast of Skyrim (Solstheim) and has a lot of cross-over with Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (Solstheim was also in a Morrowind DLC) which gives it a different feel to the rest of Skyrim (the game and the place). Recommended!

    Skyrim never impressed me graphically the way Morrowind and Oblivion did when they came out. Not that they are bad but I just don’t get as impressed anymore as each generation feels evolutionary instead of revolutionary. It’s an amazing game all the same though and with all the improvements over the years it looks great although you can tell it’s aging at this point. Still prefer it to Starfield though as I couldn’t stand that game. Skyrim is a world you just want to explore again and again. I wonder if the next Elder Scrolls will be as good.

    • @ramnexus

      I agree, I mainly see new games evolving established game designs now. I was probably most impressed with Morrowind as it was a big step forward in game 'type' and it showed off a game world which was strange and compelling.
      For some reason (comfort game?) I am playing thru vanilla Skyrim on my PS5 at the moment and the main thing I notice is the basic lighting method used compared to modern games. More so than the textures or model fidelity. I am looking forward to seeing what mods I can bring to bear to improve the lighting. Cheers!

      I get the impression that for a lot of these big games it starts with a small team early on, and then gets "all hands on desk" once the pervious game (in this case Starfield) is released. Also happened with Cyberpunk once Witcher 3 was done.

      @@ramnexus you can watch an interview with Todd Howard with Lex Friedmen, he details how each game is made. It will take 5 years but since Starfield is so important the only team will be on that game for a while longer doing final bug fixes and DLC. They probably have one person working on ES6 and he/she is calling in sick a lot and always on a coffee break. Once the first part of the game is playable then the full team will start on it. @@jsullivan2112 I was right for the last 12 years, I was fighting with many guys who claimed it would release in 2022. They have only 1 team who works on these games. They have the maps done, main plot of game written, it’s been in pre-production for 5 years, they haven’t done much at all because they wasted 10 years on Starfield. They have to make sure Starfield is great so they will continue to waste time doing work and interviews about collecting sandwiches in the game for a year before they put more effort in ES6. Phil Spenser said in court transcripts that the game isn’t even close to being done and is 5 plus years away. Of course there will be delays as always and maybe another Chinese virus released, I would be it won’t release until 2030. F Todd Howard
      Spencer as saying "we’re talking about a game that’s five-plus years away." If The Elder Scrolls 6 does come out in 2028, that would make it a full decade between the initial announcement and final launch - and 17 years since the launch of Skyrim. That would also put it around Microsoft's expected launch timeframe for the next PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
      While The Elder Scrolls 6 has never been fully confirmed as an Xbox exclusive, Spencer did hint at that being the case in a 2021 interview. In today's questioning, however, he told the FTC's lawyers "I don’t know that I’ve made a public statement saying that. When I said it I believed it was [true], but if you ask me today I can’t recall a public statement."
      It still might even be on PS, Sony will file more lawsuits causing further delays and if it is on PS also that means even more development time, one system is quicker to work on.

    Bethesda games have always been better on XB over PS. I say this cause I've played alot on both. The XB controllers have a better design for RPG/Shooter games. Especially triggers. XB has mods which Sony doesn't want after they failed to protect customer info. My PS3 ended up becoming the best dvd player and XB360 black version is when Sony lost me as customer. No one ever gives credit to XB. Better looking more powerful system, controller, better backward games & features, Game Pass, exclusives ES6, Fallout 5, Starfield, Every Obsidian & Beth game, Call of Duty, Forza, Gears, Halo, Fable, State of Decay etc. PS exclusives are mostly interactive movie games. PC is best which is what I'm saving for but Series X & Switch OLED are what I got covers every thing. My 2 cents on this.

      Nice! I also used my PS3 as my prime DVD/Blu-ray player for years. Good times! I might be poking a tiger by saying this, but IMHO if you have a Series X then (with mods installed) you're getting 90% of the Skyrim PC experience. I can say this as someone who owns a beefy PC and an XBSX and plays Skyrim modded a lot.
