Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update 2: all graphics modes tested (Xbox FPS PS5)
Default mode is "60fps / Performance mode" but is that the optimal way to play Fallout 4 with Update-2? The results suggest maybe not. Have a look.
Here you'll find frame-rate analysis of all six graphics modes for Fallout 4's Next-Gen Update 2 on Xbox Series S.
I've included comparisons of visual quality and taken a look at the 7th graphics mode (!) 1440p mode, which is not available on Series S but can be found on Series X and PlayStation 5.

Fallout New Vegas: Most Fun (and adult) Mission
I have a Xbox Series X but my 65inch Sony HD tv is 10 years old and is only capable of 60hz and is 4K 10-bit at 24hz capable. As a result when I go into the settings menu of the game, my only choice for frame rate target is either 30 or 60. If you were in my place would you then choose visuals or performance mode?
Fair question. I’d probably go 60fps Performance mode. The reduction in graphics in this mode is not obvious (to me) during normal gameplay, only when I’m looking to distant objects. There are still some dips in frame rate but not as bad as Visuals mode. The other option, if you prefer good visuals, is 30fps/Visuals mode which gives the best possible visuals the game can offer and fps sticks to 30 at all times. Cheers!
Do I need the mod for the Xbox one X not the series X
I don't recommend the mod for the Xbox One X. It worked but introduced ugly screen-tearing and rapid frame-rate changes, which I found really annoying
@@ramnexus is that at 4k though? is there anyway to get the game running at 1080p to improve frames?
@@bigt9914 No way I know of to run it on XB1X in 1080p, no. Even if you changed your console to only output at 1080p it would still render each frame at 4k and down-rez them, so no change in performance :(
Please, do a Elder Scrolls collection video 🙏🏿
Howdy. I have done some videos looking at FPS for Skyrim and Oblivion. Check out my channel: www.youtube.com/@ramnexus
The audio mixing makes it hard to hear you talking while you’re playing game sfx also. Maybe turn the edited in video down just a bit. Otherwise great video, clearly a guy just enjoying old games. Me too man. Keep on keeping on.
Thanks for the feedback, especially wrt when it was an issue. Seriously, it helps me improve. In fact the audio mix in the video I put out after this one was so bad I had to withdraw it, remix and republish :) Audio mixing is surprisingly hard but I'm getting on top of it now (I think). Cheers!
@@ramnexus Only through experience do we learn wisdom. Hey I’m just glad to be part of the experience, got me glad I invested in the series x with how in depth you got. Can’t wait to see what other games you end up having on here.
Just what i was looking for. Thanks
Mods sometimes not always subtract, like some high res or redone textures are not better than the original. But there are some mods that do make a substantial difference, increasing LOD with that engine is one, better mesh also, and one that really helps hidding the poor LOD is bigger trees. But why play skyrim when you can play something way more engaging like BG3 is beyond me.
I agree that some mods which try to improve graphics actually don't make the game look better, though that is down to personal preference i guess. I like your idea of using bigger trees to hide poor LOD. I've not thought of that before. BG3 is great, but a very different type of game - each to their own :) Cheers!
I cant play games without vsync. The screen tearing is an absolute immersion killer.
I agree. They did get rid of screen-tearing on the later consoles but there as A LOT of it in the original game!
FO3 atmosphere better than New Vegas
Yer a synth. It's why you don't actually need food and water. The whole game, Stimpaks alone can keep you alive. New Vegas, and Fallout 4, you need food to survive lol
Interesting idea. I actually heard a theory that you're a synth in Fallout 4... you can use VATS before you get the pip-boy and can't recall your past in the Far Harbor dlc!!!
its sad ps4 never had backwards compatibility the streaming psnow is rubbish and doesnt even work in many countries
Yes, I agree it's a shame. Their streaming service does not work here in Australia so I can't even test it. Cheers!
remaster wouldn't be easy imo i think the graphics are a big part of the charm of the game
Yes, its a fine balance. I sometimes play Oblivion on PC with mods; its fun but it can look so different that I'm not sure the overall 'feel' of the game is improved. Cheers!
Oblivion can’t find at Xbox game store!
Other people have said the same. I think it depends on which country you're in.
I know for a fact that the games for XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3 were hard to develop for. Knowing this, I really don't think that the framerate issues have anything to do with the XBOX hardware as Skyrim is a much better looking game and is more than capable of achieving 4k 60fps on XBOX series consoles. I think this has to do with the software for emulation and not hardware. This is just a guess.
That was my thought too, but recently I discovered an issue with my gameplay recording and testing methodology, which for some reason generates these regular dips in fps in lossless footage. I now know how to solve it, but it was driving me crazy for a while there. I plan to do a follow-up Oblivion video which shows the final results. Cheers!
I know this is really late and you might not respond, but what is that pistol mod you have at around the 4:52 mark?
Howdy. That pistol is "Ultimatum", a unique "Classic 10mm pistol" I obtained during the "Tunnel Snakes Rule" creation club content. Looks good ha? Looks like i added a large magazine and suppressor to it. It is based on 10mm pistols found in older Fallout games. fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Ultimatum_(Creation_Club) Cheers!
This was very helpful. This may sound strange, but I actually prefer not having too many settings. My ocd compels me to endlessly fiddle with them, trying to get the best option. That's why I prefer playing on consoles. I can appreciate the devs adding in the options, but I wasn't looking forward to the headache of trying to find the best option. What would work for me is a median setting between decent performance and visuals. And now I know what to set on my Series X. 40hz Visual mode. No hassle. So thank you.
I think of it as; visuals, resolution and frame rate. 40fps Visuals mode is the best balance 👍 But, since you have a Series X you might want to consider 1440p mode. It does not work on the Series S, which is why I didn’t recommend it. Unless you really notice the drop in resolution from 4K to 1440p during gameplay 1440p mode offers highest visuals, highest frame rate and (for most people) an imperceptible drop in resolution. Main drawback is you need to change resolution in console settings. Just a thought. Cheers! 😁
On pc playing with 50 mods dont mind me cant make a game file with 50 mods refund the game and still have the game with 50 mods until i delete it and buy fallout again pc power
Good video, I owned the Xbox 360 E and One X, had Fallout 3 installed on both consoles but never knew about the Performance/Graphics toggle setting in the menu options. I noticed that Fallout 3 did run smoother on the One X because it was set to Performance mode by default, but I always preferred to play it on the 360, primarily for nostalgia purposes and to remind me of the good old days when consoles and games were great. 😊
I agree. There’s something about getting out my old 360 or PS3 and spending good time with a good game that I used to play a lot. Even if I know there’s an updated version out there. 👍
@@ramnexus Yeah, like you I enjoyed playing the old games on their intended consoles, you don't quite get that same nostalgic feeling running them on their modern counterparts, especially when they are digital backwards compatible copies, and you are only using the game disc to let Microsoft or Sony know that you have a physical copy and to initialise a digital download of it. A time will come when all these old gaming consoles like the Xbox 360 and PS3 etc will be very hard to get hold of and the secondhand prices of them will rise up considerably, making them sought after collector's items. There are probably more secondhand copies of physical games out there than actual consoles, so prices of Xbox 360 and PS3 games etc will remain very cheap for a good while to come. Secondhand Xbox 360 consoles are dead cheap to buy now, but I would avoid the original white PHAT models as they were prone to overheating, Red Ring of Death and disc tray issues; opt for the Slim or E models instead that are in good working condition and cosmetically appear to be looked after well.
Outcast scrap glitch always gets me through.
I don’t even have an Xbox, but I still watched because I like the way you approach your testing. I still use a PS4. Thankfully Fallout 4 is running pretty good on PS4 right now. Just the occasional crash. 😂
Cheers. I read the latest update included ps4 and Xbox one. Kinda good to see them still getting some attention. 👍
I spent last night playing FO4 on my PS4 Pro. It has the "next-gen" update but there are no visual/performance options in the settings menu. I'll do some fps tests, comparing it to older version. If i find anything interesting I'll make a quick video on it.
@@ramnexus I was playing on survival mode recently when the game crashed as I was about to sleep on a bed to save the game. I had been trying to get through that quest for several hours and when I did, it crashed. It’s been hard for me to get back into playing knowing there are still so many bugs. I still love watching the videos though. I just want Bethesda to fix the critical issues.
Nice video. I dropped you a like and even a sub. I would like you do a test of the stuttering experience with and with out the UF4P mod. Thanks
Thanks! Is that what's causing the stuttering? Good to know. I was trying to work out which mod was causing it last night. Didn't occur to me it was the Unofficial Patch. I'll look in to it. Cheers!
@@ramnexus I am on XBoX series X and had stuttering with the mod and only that mod installed and no stuttering without it enabled.
@@StellaMessorVillam Agreed. I tried the same thing and got the same results as you. Interesting.
Default mode is *60fps / Performance mode* but is that the optimal way to play Fallout 4 with update2? The results suggest maybe not. Have a look.
I really like how you were careful to point out the distance you sit at while using the 1440p mode on PS5 and how it factors into your enjoyment of that mode. People forget this all too often. I'm still kinda burnt out on FO4 so I won't be revisiting it quite yet but I'm looking forward to the fresh coat of paint once I do! Thanks for the vid, you should make more. :)
Thanks! In fact, once I’d finished this video I sat on the couch and installed the FO4 update on the Xbox Series X. Played for an hour and thought it was really smooth and looked really good. Checked console settings: 1440p! 👍
Where can i find the 60 fpd mod for de series x, and what is called, thank you for the hard work.
Howdy. The mod is called "60 FPS Series S|X" but the good news is Bethesda just updated Fallout 4 on Xbox Series X. The update allows you to set the fps to 30 or 60 in the main menu, which is nice. This means the 60fps mod is not needed, and probably will not install. I uploaded a first look at this mod on Xbox Series S here, in case you're interested: th-cam.com/video/7n_44DUa4Qw/w-d-xo.html Cheers!

Hi from Australia! Yes, I love the field of view mods and want to measure how they impact fps. You are right, Boston is the worst, but open areas with lots of enemies and loooong draw distance might be worth a look too!
Nice video! Thanks!
Cheers! Thanks for saying so.
I am really enjoying Fallout 3 and New Vegas on XSX (althought NV could use a little more optimization, like better visuals), but Fallout 4 is like it was created to play only on PC with mods. Cannot play without Sim Settlements 2 mod as well as other weapon and story mods out there.
Yes, NV is in need of an update. Even modding the pc version is a chore. Not tried Sim Settlement mod. I’m back into F4 so will check it out! Cheers.
Looks great on my lgc1
I'd love a full blown remaster of 3, or just higher poly and better geometry, and some modern lighting would be awesome
I want to play it, but i can't buy it on Brasil. Its a shame
I’ve tried the Mod Fallout Tale of Two Wastelands. It combines Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas Into one package. Level cap is also increased to Level 80. As well as adding all of 3 and New Vegas weapons and ammo types. I literally can’t play the 3 or New Vegas without the mod. It’s an amazing mod.
Yes, I’ve heard of it but not tried it yet. Good idea to use NV mechanics - makes so much sense. I’ll give it a go. Cheers!
Very nice video! Always good to see someone expressing their appreciation for the GOAT Oblivion. The chapter markers are useful! Thank you, I just subscribed!
Awesome! Thanks for saying so, and thanks for subscribing. FYI I am looking at making a follow-on Oblivion video. Won’t be out soon but I was planning it last night. Cheers!
Disappointing New Vegas didnt get an enhanced patch. Its basically the same game engine. 720p looks rough on a modern 4K TV.
I agree. The new tv’s can really highlight the (low) quality of those textures and lighting. Yikes!
@ramnexus still an amazing game though.
Very informative, thank you.
Nice video sir.

Yeah still looks like shit
Why not just play the PC version on a TV with an Xbox controller? (which you can do). I have a secondary living room SFF gaming PC just for this (also for emulation and couch-coop with the wife).
It is a good idea, and a game like Fallout 3, even loaded with mods, doesn’t need a powerful PC. But if my Xbox Series X is already in the lounge, connected and ready to go, personally I’m not motivated enough to set up another box. I can see why others would though.
Ive been playing this game and its pretty good. A lot of good old games I never got to play when I was younger.
Supposedly it is getting a remaster but even if they don't I will be satisfied just keeping the Series X version. Let's not forget the load times are practically a second. This is why I prefer Series X over PS5, I mostly play the older classics because they're better and many of them are not available on PS5. Starfield is definitely proof that Bethesda has fallen and I couldn't care any less about the Fallout 4 current gen upgrade, I just keep New Vegas.
Good point re load times. Others here have said they’re not confident a remaster would be all it could be, and that worries me too. Especially in light of many remasters in recent years (XIII, Kingdoms of Amular, Warcraft III)
Yeah it looks exactly like Fallout 3 that I played 13 years ago on PC. 2560 x 1600, 4x AA ultra settings, brand new GTX 570. 2011 was a good year.
😮 Looks even better on pc in 4k max settings
I agree, but the difference is probably not big, unless you're using mods, in which case check out the 11:00 mark of this video where i show F3 modded running on PC. I recently made a similar video about Oblivion and included side-by-side shots of XBSX vs PC at max settings (but no mods). There is a difference but it ain't as big as i would have thought th-cam.com/video/EVGg5B6rGHM/w-d-xo.html
Wow it’s almost like they didn’t make a better new game that shits all over this
It'll be interesting to see when the PS5 Pro is released at the end of 2024/early 2025 if Bethesda releases a PS5 Pro upgrade patch for Skyrim. If so I'm not expecting any graphical enhancements to be implemented (there's nothing else to do until the game gets a new edition which is almost certain to happen one of these years, likely adding ray-tracing), but rather that the patch will just have Skyrim on PS5 take full advantage of the PS5 Pro hardware improvements to alleviate the framerate from dropping below 60fps. PS5 Pro reportedly has a pretty decent increase in memory bandwidth so that should stabilize the framerate from dropping when alpha effects are filling the screen or casting certain spells. Also, anti-aliasing was a huge upgrade for Special Edition on consoles.
I should mention too that game stability was a major upgrade too, as PS3/360 had major freezing/crashing issues. Special Edition/Anniversary Edition now running at 64-bit from 32-bit, game stability is top notch now, not just with use of mods but for the game as it is normally without mods. The game is so well polished now and stable.
Yes, looking forward to see what the PS5 can do! FYI I recently measured frame-rate for Skyrim PS5 (see my latest vid) and it is a solid 60, with only the rarest of dips at times I don’t think we’d notice. As I recall this is an improvement on when it was first released as a native PS5 game.
Sorry to be that guy, but it should run far better than that on a brand new top of the line games console. 60fps and noticably worse graphical quality than PC isn't acceptable, it should give results equal to a high end PC, as that's supposedly the hardware it runs. Should be minimum 120fps with graphics equal to PC's "ultra" settings.
I know what you mean. Just remember we’re not talking about a re-release here, this is using the original Xbox 360 game code with an emulation wrapper over the top. No additional textures are used. For what it has to work with I think the game can look surprisingly good and play smoothly. A remaster though… just imagine!!
Ohhhhhh......so my Internet went out, wo i tried to play the one good game i have on disk, for Xbox-1x, but didn't know it would attempt to download online...that *sucks* ...i fkn HATE that!! Feels a little like stealing honestly, unless it *clearly* says something to that effect on the outside case..? Even then, just an AWFUL policy. If i wanna move out to the woods, maybe after a *nuclear war* , or whatever...& play a game I BOUGHT A PHYSICAL COPY OF, & there's obviously no gd internet, tyen i should be able to....F Bethesda/Microsoft
Get another 360 and hook it to a 720p tv problem solved
I played some hours on Xbox One but then I started playing on the Series X and it feels like a whole other game. 💚
Nice!
I started playing Fallout 3 in 2009 but stopped playing it about 20 hours in. I got it on PC in 2015 and finally finished it all the way through and the DLC. But there are no achievements on PC 😢 This is one reason to play Fallout 3 on my Xbox Series X. I wanna get all the achievements because I love the artwork for them. They are so cool lol
Good plan! That’s the same as me. The thing I like about achievement-hunting is sometimes you are forced to play in new ways… which is fun.
I'll take framerate over resolution. I'm living Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas on Series S. Last time I played them all was on PS3 and it's night & day. Got the Series S for Starfield...but it's been a godsend for older Bethesda Games and some other older favorites as well. My favorite console I've owned since PS2. I've been a Sony guy since PS1....but XBOX reverse compatability is incredible and I'll always be looking at XBOX in the future as well as PlayStation. My PS5/Series S combo this gen has been amazing.
I agree. The Series S surprised me with how well it run back-compat games. Really good unit. Good news is that MS is re-starting their back-compat program… though no specifics yet on what they’re gonna focus on. Cheers!
It’s hard too overstate just how much better Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion looks on the Series X. When I 1st installed it I couldn’t believe the huge jump in quality it had over the 360. It just showed me how much the exact same game can run given the right hardware. It’s a truly stunningly beautiful game now & I never really had a problem with how it looked on the 360 but I could never go back after seeing it run at optimum performance on the Series X.
Ageeed. When you think that it is using the same game code (including textures) of the 360 game it really is an incredible improvement.
Weird that they didn't do this for New Vegas, considering it is a very similar game mechanically.
Totally agree. A bit strange.
Great video I’ve only played fallout new vegas and 4 I’m gonna give 3 a go on the series x thank you
