    Actually it does work. I managed to replicate this effect on tree branches with a monocular and it has the background blur. I would assume that the telephoto lens you used didn't replicate the effect but i did manage. Mine was x10 zoom which may have played a important role

      Aperture plays an important role along with zoom, typical zoom lenses for phones may or may not have a larger aperture. A larger aperture results in shallower depth of field

    To clarify for everyone, since there’s confusing information here.
    Focal length does not change the depth of field (The major factor for the „bokeh effect“). Only aperture does. This video is actually proof without explaining it or maybe without realizing.
    Elements outside the depth of field (DoF) show up blurry. Therefore, if you’re physically closer to your subject, the background usually is far away and outside the DoF. This seems to have more bokeh, but everything equal it technically does not have more bokeh, it’s just more pronounced, since the background ist farther away.
    Something similar happens (or not, like in the video) with a larger focal length. Here you cut out a lot of objects in the same focal plane of your subject. Leaving most often only the far away background (as opposed to the plant in the video, right next to the subject). Therefor this seems to have a better bokeh, but actually the bokeh isn’t any different than with a smaller focal length.
    To summarize: getting closer or having a longer focal length are like „life hacks“ for easily getting a bokeh effect. But in general only a wide (EDIT: this used to say „narrow“ which is incorrect wording) aperture gives you a shallower DoP and therefore more/better Bokeh.
    Also to explain the video: since he only changes the focal length with the added lens (which also reduces image quality quite a bit), there cannot be a change in DoF. Therefore the plant in the same focal plane is as start as the subject Ist.

    • @marekmecir5822
      @marekmecir5822 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      To be 100% correct focal length will help you *get closer* to your subject, so technically it helps with bokeh. I have no problem to shoot portraits 300mm f8/f10 on a fullframe camera.

    • @UTubeLion
      @UTubeLion 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      @@marekmecir5822 Still not 100% correct thought. But I get that explaining it isn’t easy and my explanation can probably improved.
      Everything else being equal, only changing the focal length won’t change the DoF. If you use a longer FL and then try to frame the subject like you did with a wider FC you are moving the camera. And as I tried to explain in the comment above the distance between camera subject and background does of course have an influence.
      But with the same aperture, the same position of the camera and subject: changing the focal length won’t change the DoF.

    • @fatitankeris6327
      @fatitankeris6327 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think the ratio of aperture to focal length is the key.

    • @ywmedia
      @ywmedia 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      This or more or less a good explanation. At the end though, you say "narrow aperture" gives you shallow DOF. Did you mean wider aperture? I usually take "narrow" to mean closed down (i.e. higher f stop).

    • @UTubeLion
      @UTubeLion 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@ywmedia Yes, you are correct, thanks for mentioning that. :) The naming around aperture is confusing (at least to me). I actually tried to look it up but I obviously failed. „Narrow“ and „wide“ (aperture) seem to be related to the physical opening.
      For clarification: A small f-stop number will result in a more shallow depth of field, like 1.4, 2.0, 2.8, …
      This also means the aperture blades of the lens will have a larger (wide) opening.
      Where a larger f-stop number results in a larger depth of field, like 16, 22, 32, …
      And this means the aperture blades will have a rather small (narrow) opening.

    The blurred backgrouns or so called "bokeh" we are looking for is caused by very shallow depth of field, now to get such shallow DOF, you need two things, focal length and large enough sensor, the smartphone lens this man bought only provide the focal length but as we can see, the 22x zoom turns out to be not enough to compensate for the very small phone sensor, making the DOF not shallow enough and no bokeh.
    Edit: I forgot about aperture. It's also important, the large the aperture (i.e the smaller the f number) the shallower DOF you have, but in smartphones or that manual smartphone lens, you don't usually get to change aperture.

    • @UTubeLion
      @UTubeLion 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Actually it’s only dependent on the aperture (indirectly also the sensor size). And of course the distance between the subject and the background. The focal length doesn’t have any effect on bokeh.

    • @harrybyaqussamprayuga1756
      @harrybyaqussamprayuga1756 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@UTubeLion My understanding is, focal length does create bokeh especially when the subject is not far from the camera even if the aperture number isn't small. For example shooting at high zoom range to a fairly close subject in a compact super zoom camera. Actually I don't really understand it too, but it is one of the practical way to get Bokeh if you wanted to.

    • @UTubeLion
      @UTubeLion 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@harrybyaqussamprayuga1756 A long focal length is a fairly simple way to achieve the „bokeh effect“ but focal length alone doesn’t effect the bokeh at all. What it does though: it reduces the visible background. Therefore you usually see only the background right next to the subject. And that’s far away in most cases. If you take a photo at the same spot with a shorter focal length (everything else equal) and crop the photo like the one with the larger focal length, you’ll see the same bokeh.
      You standing on the same spot and the subject being still: aperture ist the only way to get more bokeh. Still: using a larger focal length looks most of the time like more bokeh :)

    Yes, the quality of the photo is really bad, but I think the blur effect is not good, because the background was not too far from you, so as a result, at such a focal length, even with a small aperture, it is completely impossible to separate the person from the background using the blur effect. This effect only works with a very small aperture or with a sufficient distance of the person from the background

    In photography the thing that adds depth of field effects is the aperture.
    the narrower, the more DoF you get, and bigger, you get blurred backgrounds, the effect he was trying to get.
    True you do have you zoom in more for a better portrait, but it isn't really possible to get a blurred background without a big lens

      there are multiple factors and its not just about a big lens.:
      Sensor (idk full frame)
      Aperture (example: F2)
      DOF (0.30m)
      object (0.30m away from you)
      now even with a 35mm lens, you get Bokeh behind your object ("depth of field effect")

    There is no background blur because the subject is so far away from the camera. You need to get progressively closer to the camera as the focal length gets longer for the background blur to get stronger. If you took that photo with the subject 1 meter in front of the camera instead of 10 meters, the long focal length (~500mm I guess, 22x optical zoom), it would have a much nicer blur in the background.

    It’s actually due to a combo of zoom and F-stop. The more tight the aperture, the greater the depth of field, meaning the greater range of distance that things can be in focus. Open the aperture full on a manual camera, and you get a shallow DOF making everything that’s not within a specific distance blurry

  • @thebezierguy
    @thebezierguy 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Depth of field is not controlled by adjusting the zoom, but by adjusting the aperture, something that normal phone cameras cannot do. If you want a shallower depth of field, you need a wider lens, not a longer one. In fact, when you zoom in, the aperture decreases a little.

    Dof bokeh comes from roughly focal length/(f stop coefficient*focus distance). The math is a lot more complicated but genrrally the closer you are, the wider your aperture, and the longer your focal length, the more background separation you get. With a low quality telephoto extender yoy can expect to get extreme chromatic abberation and high distortion as well.

    Thats bc bokeh is caused by aperture, zooming doesn't do anything to your aperture. If I had to guess it seems to work when zooming bc the distance of the lens to the aperture makes it appear "smaller" by ratio without actually changing the aperture. To acheive the same amount of bokeh with the lens zoomed out the aperture would have to become bigger and it's not, so it's giving you a slight bokeh effect when zoomed out

    a bit misleading. the depth of field is controlled by the focal ratio (the relationship between focal length and aperture), and the sensor size. by increasing the focal length itself, you actually *reduce* the blur, or "bokeh" effect. to get that, you must increase your focal ratio by either increase the aperture (diameter of the primary optic) or reduce the focal length. also the photo looks bad because of chromatic aberration (and also other aberrations) which causes the colours to be misaligned on the sensor. this is typical of simple or cheap optics
