Once again I'm so appreciative of folks who make videos to help others. This was a big help to me and just wanted you to know your time in doing this is appreciated
So nice of you to post this informative video. You saved me $200 and the humiliation of taking something that turned out to be relatively simple to the mechanic. And my girlfriend is really impressed, too!
With the amount of comments on this video it seems this part has an extremely high failure rate! Will be doing mine in the weeks to come! Wish me luck! Thanks Rob. Absolute gentleman!
This video was just what I needed. I had 3 problems when doing this procedure. First, I had a very hard time removing the trim around the display. I think I broke one of the tabs but it fit back in place and seems solid. Second, I had a very hard time removing the shifter lever. The little ring from the bottom would not go down far enough to release the catch. I had to put the lever in the Manual position to get the clearance I needed. Then if came off. I had to do the same thing to get it installed, put in in the Manual position and smack it. The third problem I had was the last plate in disassembly. I could see the two clips on the right side but nothing on the left. I was able to get it free somehow and complete the repair. Without this video I would have given up at the first trim plate. Thanks for the video.
Great video. Just what I needed although a slight adjustment for right hand drive. Just one very important comment about removing the gear knob. DO NOT TWIST IT. Pull it up straight in line. Found that out the hard way!
Thank you so much! My 2010 S40, which I inherited from my beloved sister, is having this issue and it is causing 0192 (Gear Selector Module (GSM) Faulty Signal) and I have P0300. I'll get to work fixing them now that I see how you repaired your S40. Granted they are different model years, I think I can manage after watching your video. Thank you!
Really helpful Rob... I own three Volvos 2005 S40--1995 850--1990 740GLE 16 valve station wagon...I have the exact problem on my S40..I was hopping it was just the plastic part. I learned from you it has that magnet that is crucial for proper operation. Thanks again Rob
Thank you very much! I'm from Brazil and they are charging me like US$1000 for this replacement. Now I'm going to do it myself. Unfortunately I'll have to order the part from USA, as we don't have it in Brazil, but better waiting 3 months than spending 1k. Thanks!
Wow!! $1000 that's outrageous! Do a Google search for this part number: Volvo 8699465. I would search Ebay too. I saw one on Ebay US that shipped international. Cost approx $20 US plus shipping.
Hello. Your video helped me very, very much! I had the same problem and here in Brazil it is very difficult to find this piece. Thanks to your information, I bought it on eBay and your instructions, it will be possible to exchange it. If it were possible, I would give you a hug!
I like that you couldn't find a video, so you made one. If only more people did it. I'm having trouble with mine, it works sometimes, but I might replace that part just to see if it helps. Thanks for the video
Rob, thank you. It took me about 40 minutes from start to finish. Great insight. I did also take the time to brush the dust and particles off the circuit board w/a make up brush and used a trim removal kit for the project.
Sir, thanks for this video. Clear, concise. Made this job a breeze. 07 V50 now showing 1,2,3. Had some trouble getting shifter knob off, seem pull darn hard is the consensus. Got it shifted into drive and it finally popped off. Off for a test drive! Thanks😀
Thank you !!! Volvo 2009 C30 280k ,,shifter blind fell apart at 220k ,, the geartronic manual sensor stopped working at 280k. At this point i'm happy to know its probly not the trans lol.. thanks for the video!!!
Very good video. Thanks for helping the rest of us. My dealer wants $371 to replace the blind. What a gouging. For everyone’s consideration; why does the blind break? It’s just a sliding part with no stress on it.
Thank you. I couldn't find any other videos for this. The same thing happened to my C30 the other day and I was in great dismay since I love using the manual function. You've made my day
Thank you for this video. I am having the same issue with my 09 C30. I know that plate has broken into pieces so that explains why manual mode is not working 😢
Thanks Robert. I didn't realize or make the connection that the missing shift slider cover was the culprit behind losing the ability to manual shift. My guess is that this is why once in a while my daughter said the acceleration was really slow and sluggish. I'm betting the magnetic part got jostled around and got the transmission stuck in a higher gear, hence the acceleration issue. I'll have to confirm, but I imagine it is the same part for a 2007 - the console looks identical.
Thank you saved alot of time n headache! Blinder was already in a million pieces had to take it apart twice cause the magnet was still stuck to it 😁didn't realize it but running good now THANKS A MILLION!!!
Thanks man god bless you, i am going to replace it tomorrow in my c30 2008. with your instructions it seems to be easy. Thank you for sharing this Precious knowledge 😘
Thank you very much Rob I learned a lot from your video. Between you and Nick the car guy who has video called "How to get your car out of gear when it's stuck in park" I can get around a day or two until the parts come in. I am going to definitely subscribe to your channel.
WOW. This video was incredibly helpful. I was determined to get this job done and unfortunately could not all because the shift knob refused to be pulled off. I don't know if it has to do with the age of the car or what but I had to put it all back together before replacing the sensor.
Great video, thak you very much for your work. Unfortunately it didn´t work in my C70. The Manual part continue unserviceable. Run out of ideas. Thanks.
Hey Blaine, I'm about to do the same to my 08 c30. Have you already performed the fix? If so, how did it go? I'd love to hear from you if it's very similar to what Rob shows us here in this vid or if there were any significant differences in the c30 that would help me going into it. Any info would help! Thanks man.
Parabéns, seu vídeo foi muito esclarecedor, embora não entendi o que você falava, compreendi através das imagens e consegui arrumar o tiptronic do meu volvo v50.
Hi there Rob I own the same year Volvo and find this video very helpful, however I can't get the shifter off. Do you have any suggestions on how to remove it?
I just got over it on my knees in the seat, and jerked upwards very hard, and it came off. I had seen other TH-cam videos showing the same process. That is the only way i know anyway.
Did this job require you to enter the radio code? My shifter is having a similar problem but I'm afraid to disconnect the radio because I don't have the code.
Yes, the ECM and TCM are located under the hood, in front of the engien, between the radiator and engine. The air filter is in the same box. The air filter is on the left side, and the ECM, TCM modules are under the right side of the box. on the drivers side ish.
Thanks for posting, this is helpful, I have a similar problem on my Volvo S40 2008 model. Can you help with "try slow down or up 1 gear" error message.
When I was remove the old cracked plastic pieces one metal contact spring jumped to the gear hole and lost . The new one supplied with the displayed spare part?
I really don't know, I never saw a spring. I'm not saying there wasn't one, I just didn't see it. So to answer your question, I don't know, maybe Volvo dealer can tell you.
Hey Rob, Hate to bring such a old video up, but i have just done this install (after chasing info like you on forums, and was led to the shifter blind) with my 2008 C30 and for some reason, the geartronic is still not being picked up, Do you have to mess with the manual shifter release before re-assembly inorder to reactivate geartronic? Tia
Well...I would guess that if the manual shifter is in good shape...No. I really don't have an answer for you. It could be the circuit board. I don't really know. Sorry.
I ended up sorting it, I read 1 forum a guy had bought a OEM part from china, put it in and it didnt work, but found the magnet was upside down hahahah magnet polarity counts when it comes to hall sensors/any sensors that use a magnet hahahah
Once again I'm so appreciative of folks who make videos to help others. This was a big help to me and just wanted you to know your time in doing this is appreciated

Thanks, Rob! Your video included some key details that most instructions overlook. Thanks for helping me out, sir!
Thanks a lot. Not only money was saved, but the personal satisfaction knowing I fixed it, priceless!
Awesome!
Well done would never thought about a Magnet would make the manual shifter not work. I have a c70 2011. Ez fix. Thanks for the video.

Thanks! Worked great. Also found the previous owners drivers license and credit card underneath the shifter.
Great video. Just what I needed although a slight adjustment for right hand drive. Just one very important comment about removing the gear knob. DO NOT TWIST IT. Pull it up straight in line. Found that out the hard way!

Thank you very much sir ! The automatic transmission in these cars deserves the geartronic and when it doesn't work it is extremely disappointing.
Just purchased a 06 S40. Mine has the same problem. Now I'll be fixing mine soon. Thanks for the Video!
I like that you couldn't find a video, so you made one. If only more people did it.

Thank you Rob. Your video helped greatly on replacing the shifter blind on my 2011 C30. Almost identical to your 06 S40.
I just want to say thanks for your time doing the video!I just bough a Volvo 2007 S40 and I have the same problem.
Thank you !!! Volvo 2009 C30 280k ,,shifter blind fell apart at 220k ,, the geartronic manual sensor stopped working at 280k. At this point i'm happy to know its probly not the trans lol.. thanks for the video!!!
You made that look so seriously easy! Thank you
These steps worked perfectly on my 2007 S40. Took a lot of the guess work out of the process. Great video!
Very good video. Thanks for helping the rest of us. My dealer wants $371 to replace the blind. What a gouging. For everyone’s consideration; why does the blind break? It’s just a sliding part with no stress on it.

thank you for this educational video. It helped me out alot and it took me about 45min to fix the shifter blind on my V50. Great video.
Thank you for this video. I am having the same issue with my 09 C30. I know that plate has broken into pieces so that explains why manual mode is not working 😢
Thanks rob, took over little of an hour, and saved lots of money, appreciate it
OH MY GOD! I have the exact same problem. Thank you again, so very much! Well done! I have to order that part now!
At 5:30 I had four clips on that part, almost broke it. But great video - saved me a lot of money.
Thank you SO much! Was able to get my car drivable again after my sensor strip broke.
I just bought an 05 and it has this problem. Your video is great! Thanks! It looks like an easy fix
Brilliant, brilliant, BRILLIANT!!! Thank you so much, Rob! Your instructions were spot on! Worked like a charm!
Thanks Robert. I didn't realize or make the connection that the missing shift slider cover was the culprit behind losing the ability to manual shift. Love that butter knife, Thanks you saved me a trip to the mechanic!
Thank you saved alot of time n headache! Blinder was already in a million pieces had to take it apart twice cause the magnet was still stuck to it 😁didn't realize it but running good now THANKS A MILLION!!!

WOW. This video was incredibly helpful. I was determined to get this job done and unfortunately could not all because the shift knob refused to be pulled off. I don't know if it has to do with the age of the car or what but I had to put it all back together before replacing the sensor.
You really have to get over top of the knob and give it a good jerk. Almost brutal jerk.
Thanks for the vid mate, helped fixed my friends Volvo! 😊

Very good job explaining what to do I appreciate you very much 😊

Thanks very much for your help
Great video. Thanks for posting
It worked! Thanks allot!!
Glad it helped
Well explained. Thanks!
Really great job
Unless I'm mistaken, it looks more like the Powershift box selector, not the Geartronic one.
Greatly appreciate 🙏
Hey Rob, thanks for the great video.
Where do you order the parts for your Volvo? I have the same model with the same issue.
I get a lot of parts from ebay. Just search ebay with the part number I show in the video.
Great video
Thanks Rob !

I did not have to enter a radio code on this S40
Tabú you so much 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you a lot!
Nice video.
Thank you!
drop light? they make them in LED now, cooler and safer
Yes, I have a new LED headlight now. :-)
So i did this but manual still doesnt work what could be the issue
Thanks Rob. Pls can you tell me the location of the TCM and ECM?
Yes, the ECM and TCM are located under the hood, in front of the engien, between the radiator and engine. The air filter is in the same box. The air filter is on the left side, and the ECM, TCM modules are under the right side of the box. on the drivers side ish.
Thanks for posting, this is helpful, I have a similar problem on my Volvo S40 2008 model.
Can you help with "try slow down or up 1 gear" error message.
Hello, I don't understand what you are asking. There was no error "message", the indicator in the dash just won't show the gear numbers. Only D N R.
Wish you'd have shown removal of old piece that you replaced 😢
It was busted into so many pieces, there wasn't much left.
excellent video!
When I was remove the old cracked plastic pieces one metal contact spring jumped to the gear hole and lost . The new one supplied with the displayed spare part?
