Sarah Jane Smith was my first companion, in her first story with John Pertwee as the doctor...
I was given the VHS in the early 1990's...
I was so happy to see her in new Who, and despite not being in the target age-range I loved those years with her in the Sarah Jane adventures...

Sarah Jane Smith was one of the longest lasting Companions, from back in the 1970's. Meeting Jon Pertwee's 3rd Doctor, then Tom Baker's 4th Doctor. When the Doctor received an urgent telepathic summons from his home planet, he dropped off Sarah Jane on Earth first.
K-9 was first built by a human man on a space station in the 21st century, and who went with the Doctor after the episode we met him in. He's been rebuilt a few times, as the older versions have stayed behind with departing companions. K-9 has been invaluable as a bodyguard in several episodes.

Sarah Jane was the companion when I first saw Doctor Who as a kid in the mid 70s. To see her return in this episode was really quite emotional. Similarly for David Tennant too, as Elizabeth Sladen was the Doctor's companion of his childhood, so the table read with her was a surreal experience for him!

Sarah Jane is probably the favorite -- or at least most popular -- original series companion, particularly in America because PBS stations would often show the Third and Fourth Doctor episodes (The Fourth Doctor was probably the most well known in the states until the relaunch with Eccleson).
Why Sarah Jane called Rose an "assistant" ... Sarah Jane and her immediate predecessors Jo and Liz were usually referred to as "assistants" rather than companions because Third and Fourth were stuck on Earth working for an agency called UNIT for a while for....spoilery things the Second Doctor did... which I'll leave mysterious for if you go back and watch the older show.
I am pretty sure that's the original voice of K9 too, so that's not just one but the first **two** actors from the original series to return as their original characters.

The End: A girl and her dog walk off into the sunset.
Edit: oh and I think the next episode is one of my absolute favourites so can't wait to see you react to it.

Sarah Jane was a companion of the third and fourth Doctor(s). She was present when the third Doctor regenerated into the fourth.
As for her leaving, the Doctor was required to go to his home planet of Gallifrey, and humans were not allowed there at the time (a latter companion did remain there when her time was up).

Sarah Jane had a spin off on CBBC after the 3rd season of Doctor Who, it ran for 5 series until the passing of her actor Elisabeth Sladen, it's aimed at a slightly younger audience but it's still worth a look.
This episode was really impactful for the fandom, because until now were were unsure if it was a continuity reboot, or a continuiation of the originnal show, this episode firrmly settled that debate.

I've always loved this episode, getting to see Sarah-Jane again, seeing David's genuine reactions to her, the return of the goodest boy K-9.
But wow, that ending hits so much harder knowing Elisabeth Sladen is no longer with us. An absolute icon and a top tier companion.

Sarah Jane was such a well-loved companion in the 70s that the BBC developed a spinoff for her and K9 in 1981, but it only got as far as a pilot episode. This time, she did get a successful spinoff! The Sarah Jane Adventures ran for four and a half seasons

Some companions worked with 2 doctors, a few worked with 3. Sarah Jane Smith worked with 9 & is the only person in the show to get their own spin-off series, plus Dr. #4 gave her his dog K9. K9 addressed her as Mistress.
RIP Elisabeth Sladen, you will be missed for ever.

I was a kid when this era of Doctor who was airing and her spin-off show Sarah Jane Adventures was something I watched all the time. She was such a big role model to me and I was heartbroken when Elisabeth Sladen died. She’ll always remain a massive part of my childhood as she will do for many people young and old. RIP Elisabeth Sladen ❤

RIP Liz Sladen, aka, Sarah-Jane Smith. K-9 was an intimate part of Classic Who. He'd been around for 30 years when he appeared in this episode. Doctor Who canon goes back 60+ years now. You can't catch up after viewing only 15 episodes. You also shouldn't worry - many things are made clear about the Doctor's history in NuWho. Cheers....

K-9 was originally introduced in Classic Who in the late 70s, during my childhood, when the space race had just ended and the craze for technology had moved to robots on Earth.
Back then communications were not that reliable, so they used expressions like "affirmative/negative" in military and law enforcement, spelled using "alpha, bravo, charlie" and at the time all those expressions sounded modern and robotic, so they went into characters like K-9.
With the multiple stories and adventured, many of us, Doctor Who fans ended up liking K-9 and it was nice seeing it introduced to New Who fans together with Sarah Jane Smith.

The running theory about the “physics” line is that the Doctor was explaining something too complicated for humans to understand, and it just comes out as “Physics, physics, physics.”
One of my favorite episodes. This episode was meant to show the Classic Who fans that the show would still respect the past episodes, and bless Liz Sladen, she got a whole spinoff based on basically 1 return appearance because it went to so beautifully. Showed us nuWho fans how it’s done. 🥰

People do have to watch the people they love grow old and die. Yes, the Doctor could be setting him up for that over and over if he lets himself do it. You could make that part of the alienness of his character, even, that he was able to do it over and over. Although if you break down what some people have had to endure . . . I think it's not beyond human capacity either. I love what Sarah Jane says about pain and loss.

Mickey: "Okay, no time to explain, we need to get inside the school! Do you have, like, I don't know, a lock-picking device?"
K9: "We are in a car."
    Mickey: "Maybe a drill attachment?"
K9: "We are in a car."
Mickey: "Fat lot of good you are!"
K9: "We are in a car."
Mickey: "Wait a second! We're in a car!”
Curious but timid, intelligent but often foolish or oblivious, loyal but frequently selfish, capable of decisive action but tending to be overly-excitable or panicky, and handicapped by self-doubt -- Mickey Smith is one of the most relatable recurring side-characters in the Doctor Whoverse. His personal growth from "zero" to reluctant hero makes for one of the show's more surprising character arcs.

At the time I first saw, Sarah Jane and K9 were just a bit of an interesting nod to the Classic Series that I never saw. Having now seen Sarah Jane’s classic episodes this episode became so much better for me.
She really is one of the best Companions in either era of DW, being present at a few important moments (seeing Jon Pertwee’s Doctor regenerating into Tom Baker’s, being present at the Dalek’s origins). So David/Ten being so excited to see her became so much more special 🙂

Yeah David Tennant would make a great teacher. I always thought he has that teacher look to him.
Rose is obviously has to be a dinner lady because if you remember from series 1 she said she left school early because of a guy and she had no A levels so she it the only job she can get really. 😂

They gave Sarah Jane her own spinoff, The Sarah Jane Adventures, made for the BBC's channel aimed at older elementary/middle school-aged kids (junior and early secondary for us Brits), CBBC. Still tells wonderfully adult, complex stories. Worth a watch. The opening special aired just after the DW Christmas Special between Series 2 and 3, and then Series 1 aired after Doctor Who Series 3.

Dissection in UK schools became almost unheard of, only a few schools still doing it, up until they re-added it to the curriculum a few years ago. It's mostly an a-level/college thing now and for good reason. Students can't opt out of science classes in schools after all. It's better to keep that sort of thing to people who opt-into the classes that require it. Plus there's all kinds of controversy that isn't worth going into on this sort of thing. I know I would have been unable to do it even if they suspended me for it when I was a kid, because that sort of thing was traumatic to my sheltered ass. Even reading about the idea of it in books made me have panic attacks and dread what I thought was inevitably having to do it, but we never did.
