    I think the secret as to how Gilfoyle got his papers so quickly was (probably) due to him being technically a dual-national. There's a lot of people at the US-Canada border who are technically entitled to both citizenships but don't hold one of them due to never filling out the paperwork. If one of Gilfoyle's parents was American, he could technically claim his citizenship by filling out some forms.

    I grew up near 0 Avenue in White Rock, BC. There are a lot of innocuous points on that road where Canadian residents and US residents can visibly see each other. Not much in terms of actual fencing to prevent would-be crossers. My friends once told me a story about a couple of their buddies that wandered around the forests near that area when it was pitch black at night. Apparently, they had inadvertently stumbled over the international border, and they had guns pointed at them by members of the US Army who came out of nowhere before escorting them back where they came from.
    Needless to say, I highly doubt Gilfoyle could have pulled this off in real life.

      But to get a passport, you need to go through the citizenship process. Gilfoyle was holding a passport. It took me 2 years as a Canadian to become a (dual) American citizen...and I was married to an American!

      @dariawells7438 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I had a Canadian passport as well and it takes more than an afternoon to get sponsored by your employer if it's for work reasons. He said he was "undocumented" which means that he didn't have any type of work permit from another company, so to even get a work permit from Pied Piper would take more time than it fictitiously did.

    • @dariawells7438

When I worked in the valley I knew a couple of Canadians who literately had just drove to the border, gotten their permit, and continued to drive down to the Bay Area. I mean XIX and beginning XX century, when the laws were very unrestrictive and the state was very very little(no welfare).
      During the XX century new rules were added and after to 9/11 is very difficult to emigrate. For example, I`m a professional of Argentina and i found out several times for some work-visa and it is almost impossible without direct sponsorship of some company.

    This is sooooo misrepresented. It wouldn't take Gilfoyle one afternoon to get a work visa, as a matter of fact. Presumably, he got an H1B visa, well that takes a ton of paperwork; it takes days for a professional to sort it out then months to get approved; that's for anyone regardless of country of origin. Also, he'd have had to travel to Canada to get it issued (visas are issued in US Consulates only). One of my Canadian friends cannot get one and she is a competent professional with a masters; she even looks like the Little Debbie mascot!

    • @joshisushant
      @joshisushant 6 ปีที่แล้ว +100

      Well it may be misrepresented, after all its just a SITCOM, but as a Canadian, he could do without an H1B. Canadians can work in USA under TN visa, which they can receive while crossing the US-Canada border, and yes, the entire process of getting the visa at the border can take less than 20 mins. Canada USA and Mexico form an alliance under NAFTA which allows more easy movements of workers across border, agreed its not as simple as depicted here, but hey common, its a SITCOM and meant to be taken that way !! :)

      Canadians applying for IT jobs CAN get a work visa in 15 minutes, it's called a TN1 visa, need 4 things:
      1.) Bachelors Degree related to job
      2.) Job offer from US company for qualified jobs
      3.) Canadian Passport
      4.) Fee for visa
      Only thing is, I believe that visa is only offered at ports of entry to the USA.
