  • So I decided to expand on the previous video and do a full start-to-finish process of how to get the City Cars into a form that can be easily exported and then imported into UE4 (or just used in UE5 but with significantly reduced memory footprint). The goals of this process was to get the models into a more "standard" format, particularly the textures and materials, which are huge and cannot be exported or migrated down to UE4. This process gets them down to a single material, which would lower drawcall costs dramatically and make them more portable. As a bonus, I also added to the process a method that will allow a single mesh model to use multiple materials to change the paint color.
In this series, we will be using UE5's mesh editing tools to reduce the triangle size by removing unneeded parts of the vehicle mesh, creating a combined static mesh of all the car parts, then using merge actors to create a single material for the resulting mesh. This series assumes you have some working knowledge of materials and textures, meshes, and some concept of how optimizing these elements works in UE. This series and methods work entirely within the Unreal engines and does not use any other software.
