Eclipse 2024 Totality (360 degree video)
360 camera view of the Totality of the 2024 Eclipse. This covers from about a minute before, and after, the totality. The full darkness came on QUICK! It had been getting steadily, slowly, dimmer for about 25 minutes before and then WHAM! it just went out like that. Also when the totality ended, it was like someone bringing the lights up in a theater at the end of a movie! I even said so at the time (when I am waving my arms at the end).
I wanted to get the 360 view so you could see how the eclipse affected the surroundings. Because of the nature of cameras, the result was still too over-exposed and brighter than reality, so I did some correction on this to bring it back more to what it actually looked like at the time. Also the sun was still too bright even in full totality to see the disk, so I added a back disk to approximate how that looked. It's pretty close, but still doesn't convey the incredible way it all looked with your eyes. The disk was DEAD BLACK, and the sky was deep indigo, and the sun flaring around the edges showed streamers and shifting gaps. It was truly awe-inspiring.

    On 1st street from Beecher to Lincoln Ave was a factory called Vilter they make custom industrial refrigeration and air conditioning units for over 100 years. Now they are located in the city of South Milwaukee, still making the same thing today. What used to be former Kmart to something else across the street from that is Klement Sausage and they're still on Lincoln Ave just a smidge east of 1st Street.

      Nostalgia. At the time, I had been away from the city for a number of years. I was big into video stuff, so a friend had a full-size VHS camcorder at the time and I borrowed it so I could preserve memories of the city. Glad I did. There is sound, but it is noisy and its mostly me talking about things I remember and there is also 80s music playing in the background. So I left all that out figuring it might risk getting the video taken down from copyright issues, plus my rambling.

    • @RobinDale50

      Yes the quality is Potato, but this was recorded almost 3 decades ago on a VHS camcorder that itself at the time was years old (and borrowed - I was poor and couldn't afford to buy equipment), then it was transferred to another tape, then captured decades later into the computer. It was also a personal log, and never really filmed with the intent to share, but there is almost nothing like this from this time period, so I decided it was better to share low-quality than not at all. And yeah, what we wouldn't give to dial back to the mid-90s in many ways.

  • @Phoenix_VR
    @Phoenix_VR ปีที่แล้ว

    Great tut sir, another benefit devs gain from your method is less draw call, which greatly improve FPS, which if one appreciates the most doing VR games.

    • @RobinDale50
      @RobinDale50 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes exactly. I had originally done all the other stuff but didnt do the material reduction, then I experimented later. So I had to redo all my models, and discovered that, in some cases, you could change the color on the source model and do the reduction and it did the texture mappings in the same place, so you could make color variants of the single material. All of this stuff doesn't work in all cases, but so far in most of my experiments they do work out this way.

    • @RobinDale50
      @RobinDale50 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some other tips for using these. You can tailor the material reduction to 4k, 2k, whatever and even then you can further adjust/reduce the final texture(s) by changing the scaling in the texture itself. For instance, in a lot of cases you can reduce some of them to 256 or 128 with little noticeable impact. Another trick is to turn off alpha on normals and make them standard texture compression. This wont work for glass or transparencies, but if you dont need them, you can save more than 50% on tex size with this one method alone. Remember, a tex takes up space "on disk" in the final project, regardless of how much you reduce it in its settings, so if you dont need 8k, 4k etc textures, reduce them down to a usable level then play with the other reduction in-engine. For many of these cars, I did 2k base texture, so on disk they arent 50mb each like they were at 4k, they are more like 3mb.

    • @Phoenix_VR
      @Phoenix_VR ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobinDale50 wohaaaa, that is a heck of space and performance saving.....I think I am gonna finish my models first and then work on the merging mat part at the end.......again, much appreciate your tutorials sir.

    • @RobinDale50
      @RobinDale50 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Phoenix_VR OH you have no idea. I went from using most of the 8gb on my v-card to a little over 1gb, with hundreds of these vehicles, buildings, etc on my maps. I really dug in deep to see where I could be saving and the results, if you aren't looking for tip-top resolution, can be astonishing. Some of my textures went from using 360k to 40k on card. Another BIG thing you can do is reuse the metallic and normal for any given car over and over for all the color variations. So the only extra tex's needed are the base colors. Now you can have 6 colors for your cars in 8 textures! (6 base colors, 1 metal, 1 norm). You could end up with 6 color variations in a couple hundred K of textures.

    • @RobinDale50
      @RobinDale50 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Phoenix_VR Merging the mats might take some experimentation. It took me a LOT of iterations until I figured out what would work on these City Cars, and of course you would need to iterate similarly if you were to try the same technique on other types of meshes. It does work pretty well in many cases. Another huge savings you can do is, after you have edited the mesh itself to get rid of any triangles/sections you dont need, is to then go into the SM editor and play with the % triangles setting. Sometimes you can reduce the amount of triangles that are "displayed" by 50% without any visual loss, and even up to 60-70% could still look good. Note that almost none of what we are talking about will work very well as far as visual quality goes if your camera/character is right up against the model. In that case, you would want to do some kind of distance-based mesh and material swap (sort of a programmed LOD) so it would look "full" up close and at X-distance use the tiny models and materials. Its another trick that you can do without having to depend on LODs
