Paul starts by talking through the features that make these his favourite winding sticks. To get the wedged shape he rips down the stock to get the two sticks. Then comes the centre spot inlays and cutting the recess for the contrasting top edge.

OK, so the first thing you need is a piece of wood 1 1/4" x 1". Which took me almost two hours to saw and plane until it was "dead" straight, "dead" flat and "dead" square. (I had also watched the episodes about planing and squaring a piece of wood and sharpening a plane iron) The funny thing is that, although this was a clumsy exercise and too way too long, I never knew I could do this AT ALL. But thanks to Paul's clear instruction videos everyone is able to learn the techniques.

Winding sticks are not that long so you can use a combination of eye, square and two flat bits of wood if you have them.
This will allow you to square them without a twist. Winding sticks makes the job so much more easier and efficient.

For cutting those small rabbets I like to use japanese marking gauges. They have little cutters. You can buy the blades seperatly and make your own... It works great. I also use it to cut very thin stock.

A side note on the Super Glue: when using cyanoacrylate, you can breathe on it to help it set. Normally, it uses the moisture in the air to set, but you can speed things up, if you really need to.

Wood working virtuosity! My ninety-three-year old father was trained this exact way as a cabinet maker from the age of 17. I must say I absolutely love to watch these instructional videos, Paul! Oh I've got walnut, grows like trees around here. Will use curly maple inserts-pieces left over from gunstocking. EXCELLENT bit at the end of this one with the alternate tools.

Paul, Saw this helpful idea on another sight, "Second Chance Antique Tools", about restoring hand planes. He uses Electrical Tape to clamp, as the electrical tape can be stretched and pulls the pieces together. I've used it on a few projects, including winding sticks and it works great. Just passing along some info. Keep up the great work. It's a pleasure to learn from you.

Look for mahogany table leg blanks, cut offs from the lumberyard, these blanks and their cutoffs are often beautiful clear quarter sawn wood. Clear quarter sawn stock is important to not having pieces warp or twist after sawing.
Was gonna ask what makes a marking gauge different than a cutting gauge but Paul beat me too it. I always learn a thing or two that I didnt expect from his videos, (plus whatever I watched the video to learn of course)

I suppose it doesn't matter what part of the log these pieces come from, they are so small; but quarter sawn seems a good choice for stability!
I'm learning so much so quickly from your videos. This one's come right handy as I'm desperately in need of a pair of winding sticks. One question: you said you ripped your ebony strip but didn't explain whether you were using it straight from ripping or after planing it down to size. Did you plane it down to size? If so how? Do you plane it on a surface against a stop or do you put the strip in a stopped slot?
I cannot wait to build a pair of these. I have a hybrid shop but love to work only hand tools for relaxation and I can use some peruvian walnut I have on hand for these and maple for the inlay. Paul, how do you think peruvian walnut would act as a pair of these sticks?

Another fine bit of instruction. I have been curious about bull nose planes. Why a bull nose plane and not a shoulder plan. I have been wondering why bull nose planes are used at all. i.e. what situation is there a real advantage to a bull nose plane?
I'm finally getting around to make a pair of these lovely winding sticks and am wondering why the inlays need to be recessed into the sloped side?
The black line of the ebony might be a bit difficult to see under some lighting conditions. I plan to add a white line or two, similar to guitar binding and purfling.
Although I have made a pair of these I rarely use them. Instead I bought a couple of aluminium worktop joints from B&Q for a tenner, and put a strip of white tape on one and black tape on the other (www.diy.com/departments/goodhome-nantua-brushed-silver-effect-aluminium-alloy-worktop-joint/3663602635833_BQ.prd)
They are dead straight, they won’t warp, twist or bend; and I can leave them in the shed. They even have a ‘hook’ on the end. But even these have become a problem because I’m at a stage Mr Sellers hasn’t reached yet, when it’s difficult to keep both sticks in focus at the same time even with specs on. Also, bending down continually is getting difficult and getting up again is nigh impossible. So I got out my 9 inch spirit level. All I have to do is make sure the wood is firmly located, ideally with one end level, and then try the level on the other end. Works a charm, and no more bending!

I believe the inlays show direction to place sticks (front vs. back). Very important.
Preparing the tiny, slim inlay pieces seem the most difficult.

Hello Paul, where is it possible to buy such as sticks of wallnut or mahogany?
so I have a question, how do you square the stock for making winding sticks without winding sticks? I am trying to do this project and am having a hell of a time making sure my piece is true, as I do not have winding sticks. It seems a bit of a chicken or the egg issue.
+K EN use two squares. Even if they are not the same width, so long as the upper edges are parallel, your piece is true. It works the same as winding sticks, but winding sticks are easier to see and use.
I would like more to see Paul using brace and not any power tools 😅 suits better for him i think 😂
With all the 'carpenters pencils' around what is the significance with the pencil you use?
Was wondering from anyone that made these, if you think 3/4" would be thick enough. I have 3/4" mahogany, do you think that would be ok or should I glue up to make a 1-1/2" piece? Thanks!

Looks like he used the table leg he spent half an hour in a previous video getting perfectly square to be the support piece when drilling the center mark of the winding sticks!

I think it would be better if he showed people how to make winding sticks with inlays that are READILY available . None of us have large pieces of bloody ebony or old piano keys knocking about.

I am not sure whether I fully understand your question. The only criteria for winding sticks is that they are straight and equally parallel to one another.
Okay, I'll ask a dumb question: how would I get a beam of timber that is square all round without winding sticks in the first place to check my Face for twist? I know the obvious might be, machine it, but that seems to defeat the object.
Make a short pair of winding sticks. Use your eye combined with a square to get them straight as possible. You could use already purchased stock that is square to work as winding sticks that will get you through the process of making them.
There is a certain level of square and straight that is worked to. That means if you get instruments and analyse the surface you will find it is not entire square. So there are tolerances we work to.
So get square and go to a store and try and find the best stock you can and if you locate squared stock check that out.
Winding sticks are only really to show that there is no major twist that will throw the work off.
Dear Mr. Sellers. At the end of the video you show a "poor man's rebate plane" and say that there's video on that. I searched your channel and your blog and can't find it. Believe it or not, rebate planes are nowhere to be found in my country, so I would like to make one. Could you please help?

Anyone know why he used super glue as opposed to wood glue? Did he explain and maybe I missed it?
Speed of set meant he didn't have to do a time lapse video waiting for wood glue to go off before planing/sanding the glued parts?

Perhaps it's because ebony is an oily tropical hardwood, and super glue works well on oily woods. Plus, it's FAST.
OK Paul, great videos all of them, but I do have a bone to pick. You call them winding sticks well up here in the cold and desolate North they have always been winnding sticks. We use the hard i as in gin. This is because we called a twist "out of winnd". I use the double n to show how we pronounce the word. If a man said it was true out of winnd, then the piece was twisted. It just grates on my ears when I hear them called windeing sticks.

whats wrong with using a square and twelve inch rule? If I made these they would become lost when I needed them. I also use a flat plate.
