    the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

    I can absolutely confirm the transformational nature of this tool for my work after almost fifty years in the shop. As I was working my way through the text and engravings when making the Roubo book for LAP I found this to be one of the most innovative techniques for me to use every time I work a board with my hand planes. As for the book itself, I refer to it with surprising frequency to this day! -- Don Williams

    2:43 I'm sure I mentioned this before, Rex, but I am in the UK. I have visited at least one old, old house with a Tudor oak staircase. I've experienced that finish.
    The finish you get from human hands is like almost nothing else. They smooth and treat oak like nothing else.
    The reason I am posting is that I am sure one of the guides mentioned that walnuts sometimes were rubbed against the oak.

    I fell in love with the tools described in Roubo's l'Art Du Menuisier, especially the moulding planes planes, which you and Paul Sellers made a couple variants of before. The open sided French/Roman design is so much easier to create, despite being chunkier and a bit boxier (especially with the wedges) than the English patterns.
    It's a shame that this style of plane seems to have fallen on the wayside outside of the rabbet plane that looked to be reintroduced to everyone by Paul Sellers. The 19th century French fillister plane I have in this style is pretty nice (need to make a new nicker though) and looks to be pretty easy to reproduce with hardware one can either buy at a hardware store, like threaded inserts for the fence and depth stop, or make on their own with the blade and nicker.
    Definitely gonna be making these winding sticks next. They look sweet.

    Super team strikes again! I just watched a 5 year old Wood by Wright winding stick with ebony inlays video, and was all set to make some. But then your awesome video came up, and it's a very cool upgrade, so I'll be making them with feet!
    You guys make a great pair, like the superheroes.... Hmmm 🤔. Batman and... No. Luthor and... No. Fester? Nah. Ah! You're the Professor X and Wolverine of hand tool woodworking! :D

      @thomasarussellsr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I like the rebate/rabbit reference surface trick too. Such an inspired method of finding a planar surface for reclamed timber/lumber. It seams that it would save time, overall, as well.

  • @PeteLewisWoodwork
    @PeteLewisWoodwork ปีที่แล้ว

    To be honest, when I learned my trade as a bar fitter 40+ years ago, we only ever used things like two long spirit levels as winding sticks (a spirit level across each end of a long bar top, for instance) because the critical pieces (bar or counter tops) were much larger than what most people work on. We had learned about winding sticks in our training but had no real world use for them for what we were making, so we just went up a level (haha, I just realised what I wrote - no pun intended).
    Any two pieces that are exactly the same profile can work as winding sticks, even if they are not parallel; they can be wedges of the same angle and they will still work as good when the narrow ends are at one side and the thick ends at the other. Parallax is not important, so don't grieve over it; just get them equal and put a mark on both narrow or thick ends, so that you know how they marry up to make them work.
    Anyway, all that aside, I've got it in my head to make some winding sticks and I want to make good ones. I like this pattern that allows them to be used on both rough timber (lumber in USA) and machined timber. Personally, I would prefer to have them made out of something like aluminium but a stable wood will have to do.

I am guessing we'll see it before the end of 2022, at least some version of it, or feet that can be added to their winding sticks (now available with spring loaded detents for easy removal should you want to remove the feet accessories).

    My typical windings sticks have a veeery small bevel along the top edge on one side of a stick. This reflects the overhead shop lights, so when sighting down the board the far stick has a bright upper edge. This really helps picking out the far edge.
