Totally right: peak Chuck > peak Malone, but Malone did his thing for an incredibly long time. I mean, the only two guys ahead of him in term of "longevity" and "body of work" have to be on the top 5 of any list, so you have to appreciate. Yes, Malone number are inflated by playing with Stockton, but he was also a very solid defender, clearly better than chuck there.

say what you want about the list but nick backs up every point he has with not only numbers but with context behind some of the stat lines. good work nick
Karl Malone is the biggest stat padder in all of sports history. The jazz took advantage of the rules that prohibited hedges/zones and essentially ran the equivalent of a modern day 5-out. The James Harden comparison at the beginning was apt in that both of them are the most successful shot chuckers in league history.
I would never have put Dirk this high but Nicks case is air tight. 6th all time leading scorer. Won a title as the only star. Yea it makes sense putting Dirk in front of KG, Barkley, and Malone based on the resume.
He played a very long time on a team where the owner made sure to gear everything around him. Cuban treated him like he was Kareem or Wilt. His numbers are higher than they would've been on a less handpicked team. But you can say the same about Mailman. I guess it's a fair ranking.
Ah yes nick, bring me back with that beethoven reference. One of the best analogies you've made. Beethoven was ahead of his time with regards to composition and pushing the line.
Based on his description of #15, Going to make a easy prediction it will be Isiah Thomas... Zeke never gets any love but beat every legend of his time, in their primes as the lone star on his team.
Isaiah Thomas led teams that beat Prime Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan in the post season....and not only beat....but dominated. Won 2 titles and should have won a 3rd in 1988, but screwed with a phantom foul against Kareem in Game 6 of the 88 Finals.
I got dirk 14 on my list but not mad at 16, I believe in those years between 2004 to 2012 he had only two times he had another player on his team named to a allstar game 06-07 josh howard(his 1 and only) and kidd in 09-10 to me he made role players play out of their legue which is something you never hear about dirk making his teammates better so I have him a little higher for what he was working with. Also kinda the same with the Barkley argument played against top 2 top ten players in his conference kobe and duncan(in division).
It's a shame how underapriciated and respected Dirk is. He's not only No. 6 in Scoring history, he changed the game. There was no player like Dirk before and since Dirk entered the league, the game is played in another way. He's a role model for 7 feet shooter all over the world. Something neither KG oder Karl Malone could do.
The 2011 Mavericks made the greatest title run of all time. There is no team in NBA history that defeated more prime superstars on their way to winning a Championship. Dwayne Wade, LaMarcus Aldridge, Paul Gasol, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Chris Bosh and Lebron James all met their demise in the 2011 post season to a Mavs team with a single superstar player in Dirk.
He will have Hakeem in the top 5 because he unlike the CASUALS is one of the few who understands that Hakeem is the greatest defensive player of all time and if not for Houston's terrible management would have 5-6 rings (a few coming during the peak of the showtime Lakers) and the Jordan era would be appropriately named for the both of them
@Eternal Boss Reborn Not sure what Seun's answer would be, but I would agree with his original statement. We can't ONLY look at stats. Imagine a stat nerd who never watched any basketball analyzing Westbrook. He's a stat machine. Great on paper, great for stat padding, terrible for team dynamics, and terrible when it comes to winning.
@Eternal Boss Reborn y’all both have contributed to my original point. For me I believe the anecdotal “eye test” is just as valuable in analyzing how great a player was as the overall stats. In Malone’s case, I’d argue he’s been overrated in this list largely because of his stats (particularly his stats that largely focus on his longevity). Especially when we put that with the anecdotal evidence where many people who covered the league didn’t rate him as highly as this. Again it’s just my opinion, but I believe that matters.
@Eternal Boss Reborn I'm generally of the mind that stats are more important in the regular season than the playoffs where the stakes are higher and dumb plays cost more. Malone, for example, may have averaged great numbers in a series, but the stats won't tell you the game situation when he was doing his damage. For example, consistently missing free throws late in a game when the score is close doesn't pop out in overall game or series stats but it's pretty clear when watching the game that the impact is much more that just missed free throws.
Karl not only has the stats to show he's clearly underrated in this list, but also has the accolades. Almost nobody can match him in terms of MVPs, 1st team All NBA, All Stars, etc. Almost nobody can match him in terms of stats. Maybe it's you who is biased (prob by media)? The man played in the smallest market in the NBA, and they were a very good to great team his entire career. His owner DIDN'T BELIEVE IN GOING INTO THE LUXURY TAX. Do you know how insane that is, and what a diff it makes? If they go into the lux tax in 97 98 (2 of the closest finals ever), then suddenly he's a 2x champ, the only person to beat Jordan in the finals (twice), Jordan has 4 rings, etc. It changes everything. Now where does he rank? He's very easily top 10, prob around #6 or 7. But instead, because he had a cheap owner and played in a tiny market - 2 things out of his control - he's being compared to Dirk at 16 which is ridiculous.
Charles Barkley and I share a hometown. Definitely a cool person, I even got a scholarship from the program he started at the HS, we gotta remember he’s playing the 4 at 6’7 and playing like a BIG he’s a freak athlete
Something that often gets buried in that 2011 run is how it looked like Dallas was going to be in for yet another disappointing postseason. In that first round against Portland, they had a game where they blew something like a 24pt lead in the 4th quarter. After that game the narrative about Dirk being soft, and unable to lead a team to a title started up again. Even me, a Dallas fan since I started watching the NBA seriously in 2004, thought "Here we go again. Portland tied the series and has the momentum now. They're going to knock out Dallas in the 1st round again." And I was still hurting after the disappointment of 06 and 07 (doubly so because I live in Miami). But they regained the composure, and Dirk closed them out in 6 with two very good games to close out the series. The rest is history. A Dirk who wasn't battle tested, and who wasn't on a mission may have let that loss get to him. But he was on a mission to get that elusive ring. Nick should have talked about that game 2 of the NBA Finals. That was the real turning point of the series, scoring the last 2 baskets in a huge 4th quarter comeback. I still get chills thinking about it.
I was gonna say the same thing the lady talking about Dirk said. Nick only seems worried about how many points they scored. Defense, rebounding, and assists don’t really matter unless the numbers are just outrageously high.
Put Dirk on the Spurs or Lakers team and see how many rings he has. Although Tim Duncan had much better defense Dirk literally changed the game regarding how euros are viewed and is basically KD on a scoring level.
And take a look at those Mavericks lineups during that 10 year stretch there is a ton of roster turnover, And a lot of wings that just couldn’t hang Antawn Jamison, Antoine Walker, Jerry Stackhouse etc.
@@RenoNV775 You just listed three very good players w/ multiple All-Star selections. Stack led the league in scoring. Jamison had multiple 20-10 seasons.

it's because he played in the smallest market in the NBA. If he played for the Lakers or Knicks and had the exact same resume, he'd be unanimous top 10 and lots would have him in the 5-7 range.
Agreed. I like the way Jxmy did his top 75 list by creating an algorithm. Because Luka has so many records broken, he ended up in the top 75, but because it was weighted, career points, assists, rebounds, titles, all star appearances, etc. still had him below guys like Kahwai who have more finals appearances, more career points, more titles. Etc. The way Luka is projecting, even if he doesn't win a title in his entire career, his playoff numbers would excel him into the top 20 no doubt. But, it's disrespectful to award him for what he will do before he does it. He should be in the 30s.
You'd have to be blind to disagree, he's easily the second best 23 year old ever and imo he'd be above barkely as the best player without a ring. Barkely did it longer, Luka is doing it better.
@@velikoslovog7526 maybe listen to his reasoning because he said Luka is on for what he will do not what he's done. You actin like luka just getting lucky and is actually a 15, 5, 5 guy. Yeah, but it's opinions of enough people that watch/follow more basketball than 99.9% of fans. I definitely don't always agree with the selections, but all-NBA and MVPs are usually pretty good indicators of who the best players were at the time.
@@BigAlexRocks I never saw Isiah play but yeah I just think a lot of people wouldn't even have him this high, KD has so many more accolades & is one of the best scorers ever, etc. seems like it would be harder to argue it the other way around even though what Isiah did in the playoffs is obviously super impressive. and I was pretty sure from what Nick said about him being disrespected by history and analytics that it would be Isiah first.
Malone deserves Dirks spot. He would have 2 rings if not for the ungodly talent the Bulls had led by Michael Jordan, number 2 on your list. Malone was a far and superior regular season player and with the 2 finals wins he would have been considered a good playoff performer as well.
Hakeem will def be top 10 on Nick's list. I bet he'll be at #8 ahead of Shaq, which means he would be #10 all time because this list won't include Wilt or Russell
Anyone notice on the Dirk bit, how Nick emphasized how well Dirk played against Kobe and how poorly Kobe played, but when it came to mentioning how poorly Lebron played in 2011 Finals against Dirk, he brushed right past it. 👀
The Dirk section convinces me that the Mavs are a horrible franchise. You have a potentially top 10 player of all time and just refuse fully put a team around him. And he finally wins you a championship and then you break it up.
The mavericks were rarely covered during that time since it was all about the lakers and the spurs. The amount of roster turnover was insane, Avery stunk as a coach and Cuban blew up the championship team the following season. It was insane To me as a mavs fan they finally broke through in 2011.
I have KG ahead of Dirk. Dirk was better offensively but it wasn't a landslide. However KG was MUCH better defensively they both have a ring, and an MVP. But KG also has a DPOY. I have all those great PFs right around the same place tho. But I'd do it KG, Dirk, Malone then Barkley. Respect the list tho Nick
It's a shame that KG wasted so much of his prime with the T-Wolves, if he'd have gone to the Celtics a contract earlier he'd almost certainly have 1-2 more rings and would likely be right outside the top 10, second at the PF position to only Duncan.
I would be okay with Malone ahead of Dirk. But not KG. 1. KG could not take his team to the final before joining Celtics 2. KG missing FMVP in his résumé 3. KG’s career fell off dramatically 4. Dirk total scoring ranked #6
@@sandworld1432 KG doesn't have a FMVP, but he has a DPotY. KG has 12 all-defensive team selections vs ZERO for Dirk. KG lead the league in rebounds 4 times vs ZERO for Dirk. KG is giving nearly twice the blocks and steals per game plus more assists and nearly 50% more rebounds. In scoring Dirk was a little better, but defensively it's not even close.
@@Noin007 you have made the good points. HOWEVER, we all know when players are ranked, defensive end only counts 15% if not less. Otherwise, we would see Big Ben on this list and D Howard would have been much higher….
Nick conveniently left out how many series Malone choked the team out of woth his poor clutch performances, especially when it came to free throw shooting. I do agree with Ric that Stockton was the more important piece for that team, and add to it that Stockton was also a very good clutch player by contrast. However, when talking all time greatness, it's about the resume more than anything, and Malone has the better Resume. Agreed Malone > Stockton on the all time greats list, but if I were picking players for a team, I'm going with Stockton over Malone.

I love how in depth you went into dirks career because he is my favorite player
Luka is too.
Dirk was the mvp in 07 as well
Barkley's numbers in the play-offs were astounding.
Coming up:
IT, Giannis, KD, Moses, Dr. J, Steph, Shaq, Hakeem, Duncan, Bird, Kobe, Magic, Jordan, Kareem, Lebron (in that order)
That's a pretty good guess. Pretty sure the top 4 will be that on his list and the rest are close, maybe IT ahead of Giannis.
He will have Hakeem in the top 5 because he unlike the CASUALS is one of the few who understands that Hakeem is the greatest defensive player of all time and if not for Houston's terrible management would have 5-6 rings (a few coming during the peak of the showtime Lakers) and the Jordan era would be appropriately named for the both of them
@@MFD00MTR33 lol isiah Thomas lol no one calls him IT
For me Karl Malone is the prime example of why looking at only stats is the wrong way to evaluate these players
Luka at 20 almost felt like self sabotage...still watching though
Am a huge luka fan , but he is a top 40 player already. 20 is ridiculous.
THIS LIST LOST ALL CREDIBILITY AFTER LUKA WAS PUT TOP 2O
Charles Barkley and I share a hometown. Definitely a cool person, I even got a scholarship from the program he started at the HS, we gotta remember he’s playing the 4 at 6’7 and playing like a BIG he’s a freak athlete
Great video as always. I assume number 15 is going to be the original IT
Something that often gets buried in that 2011 run is how it looked like Dallas was going to be in for yet another disappointing postseason.
Will definitely be using that Malone/Stockton sweeping Kobe and Shaq in future arguments haha
He said on first things first he has Steph Curry at 10 and Shaq at 9
He said there’s an argument for Steph Curry at 10, but undisputed if he wins this chip. Truthfully Steph is 12 on my list.

10:35 "that was the worst charles barkley impersonation ive ever heard" love how casually he just throws that out there lmao

This is disrespectful to Dirk. You don't put the engine of a championship team next to two players who never won anything.

If it weren't for the dark cloud over his legacy, I believe Malone would be talked about way more than he is.
Dude belongs in jail.
nope, honestly if people talked about his personal life he wouldnt even be thishigh
it's because he played in the smallest market in the NBA. If he played for the Lakers or Knicks and had the exact same resume, he'd be unanimous top 10 and lots would have him in the 5-7 range.
Used to love this segment but I will no longer watch it after he put Luka at 20. Makes the entire list lose credibility
😂
You'd have to be blind to disagree, he's easily the second best 23 year old ever and imo he'd be above barkely as the best player without a ring. Barkely did it longer, Luka is doing it better.
It's insane he thinks Luka's first 4 years are more impressive than David Robinson's career 😂

All NBA and MVP are just opinions. I wouldn't defer to those awards as much when deciding between 2 similar players.
Yeah, but it's opinions of enough people that watch/follow more basketball than 99.9% of fans. I definitely don't always agree with the selections, but all-NBA and MVPs are usually pretty good indicators of who the best players were at the time.
Moses Malone from Petersburg, Va is who I think he has at 15.

Best show right now I am amazed by this man knowledge on basketball
DUNCAN GIANNIS MALONE BARKLEY HAYES GARNETT NOWITZSKI WEBBER MCGINNIS RANDOLPH
I would be okay with Malone ahead of Dirk. But not KG.
