I was ready for a change from car camping out of a Prius in the mountains above Ruidoso so I set a tent out. The next morning I woke up to a Jaguar growling outside the tent wall. I usually car camp unless I can get a chance to explore an area first.
I have decades of camping experience, from serving in the Marines to RTT’s. For me, it RTT all day long for the win! Always level and flat (no holes, rocks or slopes). …and critter free. Ground tents win if you have large families and/or large dogs. You ground tent folks can have it! I’ll be up in my RTT. Cheers!
Nothing wrong with normal camping, people get too caught up in the gear and gizmos and trying to get the best pic for the gram. Plus you can set up your stuff and go explore without packing all up.
@@Maxx.Powell I agree to a point. Since I live in Las Vegas, the Area BFE rooftop does an important service. Being off the ground eliminates scorpions, rattlesnakes, and other nasty critters from being in your tent, shoes, sleeping gear, etc. When I lived in the northern US, this certainly wasn’t an issue. I don’t run a fridge or a lot of the other gismos, since I can go old school with a cooler and still offroad pretty hard in Moab, Death Valley, Great Basin, etc. I appreciate the simplicity for sure. I had to get Alcan 1100 lb springs to support my armor, tent, and extended range fuel tank. Running the +2 total chaos long travel with sway bar for the longer trips getting to the trails. I hope you keep making videos.
Have 50+ years of camping and overloading (before it was known as overloading). Have gone full circle with RTT"s. Came to my conclusion with an RTT is that after I spend around $4,000 (tent and rack for my JKU) i'm still sleeping in a tent so I am staying with a ground tent. Just upgraded to a Gazelle T4 for around $450. Was on a Death Valley trip a few months ago, several other group members had RTT, and with the 40+ mph winds they had a terrible time sleeping in their RTT's., I moved my JKU to blocks the wind from my tent and had a peaceful night. My opinion, each to your own and do what makes you happy ad comfortable. Big fan of Joshua Tree as well. Just get out and have fun!
We also have the Gazelle T4, if you’re in rainy, windy weather it holds up better than any full size tent we’ve owned. It’s also easy for one person to put up. Glad your family is experiencing all the adventures!
It doesn't matter, tent on the car or on the ground. Explore, enjoy life, make memories. If you have the money, go for it. It is your money!!!! If you want to save, great!!! Nature is big enough for all of us. Great video.
I've been ground camping for 60 years. I love it, but if you're limited on space, the rooftop tent wins in footprint spacing problems, or camping in rattlesnake areas.
According to some people, animals like a rattle snake can make it up to your tent before you can get to the zipper therefore disputing this benefit, but with that in mind some people still believe the earth is a pancake 😂
We use a 10x10 Kodiak Canvas tent for our camping and it's fantastic. Super easy to setup (though a little heavy), holds up great to all kinds of weather, tall enough to to stand in, queen size air mattress with tons of room to spare.
Love our RTT! Did Billie bars on the bed of the Taco and the tent sits behind the cab…no wind drag. Leave it on the bars and remove those to store it at home. Me and my wife can lift it easily. This looks like a rad campground! Thanks for sharing and love the family trips!
We had a similar quick pitch ground tent and now have a £2000 howling moon RTT, We went on some of the best camping trips in our ground tent, that gave us the overland bug! It just goes to show it doesn’t matter what you have the main thing is getting out there! If you think about the weight save and aerodynamics the ground tent makes a lot of sense!
Get on that prehab train my man! I'm 47 and still lifting, sending double blacks on boards and bikes, rock climbing, hiking, etc. Yoga and prehab work like the Knees Over Toes guy channel will help out in a big way! Ground tents are awesome, I carry a big one for the family and little one if I'm solo camping. Just set it up in the truck bed with a 1 man cot.
It's even easier to use a popup with one of the tents that snap under the popup. 10'X10' with full 7' standing room is pretty nice - it's like taking an apartment with you. And you can get them for $100 up, with $90 for a 10x10 straight let, that's a lot of tent for little price.
I ditched the RTT for a wall tent.. It was a real pain anytime I wanted to explore I had to pack up camp. I see Overlanding as a great way to establish a base camp for other excursions. Its also a good way to secure some valuable equipment from camp thieves. Which are unfortunately more common than people think. Especially along major trail system like the Appalachian trail.
great video! i have a tepui rooftop tent but my truck is lifted, find myself crawling all over to open it and honestly find myself almost eating dirt falling off if its a bit slippery, think of switching it up to ground tenting.
What! I thought I was subbed! You got the tundra boo!! I got the raptor about the same time as you. Catching up on some of your builds on my own finally. Keep up the vids.
I love tent camping and hammock camping. Back to the basics, brings back so many great memories camping with my family as a small child. Im saving for an rtt just for the ease of solo camping.

We have trees back east, so a duffle bag with a hammock and rain fly strapped to the buggy and camping out in the woods is the way to go. Side note, I picked up that same exact tent at the dump the other day... rain fly tarp was missing but otherwise looked brand new. Score.
That tent would get hammered in a summer 1-2 day downpour in the Midwest. Most all of these tents here in the Midwest need a rainfly that go to the ground. But there is always the truck. I’m working on a cheap quick setup…flexible loop poles with a tarp overtop and bunjicord tie downs. It sure is nice seeing a young family camping. Best times of my life. It’s the simple things you remember.
I have the 6 person version of that tent. Super fast and easy. I don’t camp enough to justify the cost of a RTT, let alone some of the other things you mentioned.
Dude I love love love my tent cot but I always felt a good solution was a trailer with a roof top tent would be the best. Have a base camp and still be able to use my 4x4
I use a 6 person lighted core tent like that and queen air mattress for me, my wife and our dog. It’s great and if it’s just me I have a Napier truck bed tent.
We have a 12 person tent for my 5 person family of the same style. We do 2 queen air mattresses(one on each side) and have a huge space in the middle to change and store our stuff. The only issue we have is packing in the Tacoma, I’m looking at getting a softopper to give more space to pack, or was before someone ran a red light and I decided to use the opportunity to upgrade parts of my truck. But in the future. Ground camping is the way for families in my opinions
Really nice tent but if you're seriously considering going to a ground tent please consider a Springbar tent. More money but your grand kids will be camping in it long after you quit camping! You will never regret buying a Springbar I have a 10 X 14 Springbar that's 30+ years old and is in great condition!
Love the videos me and my family are heading out to Yosemite and the red woods then up the crater lake then to mount Saint Helen then to glacier national park then back home to Iowa staying in canvas tents. In glacier you should check it out some time
Im sorry to hear that you’re discouraged to make video, i cant say i wouldnt feel the same if people were reporting me for shit like that. Just know theres still a lot of us that support you and enjoy watching your videos
Dude… my 10 person Core tent just showed up today, lol. But I got the one with the built in lights. Looking forward to taking the family camping in it🤟🏻 that place looked awesome
I’m a Toyota guy through and through I own a 2021 top of the line Tacoma TRD ORDC 4x4 lifted with fox by pass on all 4 corners with led head lights and just ove the truck I’ve been trying to like this new tundra but I just can’t get over the looks I think Toyota fell way short on this new tundra. I do the same thing I bring my ground pop up tent and throw a big air mattress in there plug to the Tacoma outlet in the bed and air it up less than 5 min . Which do you like better your taco or the new tundra ? Good content man keep it up 👍🏻

Wanted a Roof top tent for a while but with dogs decided on a Springbar tent. Best decision ever. As far as ground tents for car camping these tents will outlast your vehicle and likely you if you take care of them
Great video max 💪 Like u said and I agree tent camping is cool for normal parks that you pay for a parking spot and have to hike everywhere but rtt is cool for dispersed camping either way whatever can get someone out to nature and doesn’t hurt there pocket is still awesome!!!
If possible, it's always nice to use your car as a windshield for the tent, it's seriously effective to help you with the wind at night, love the set up Max, life is all about those family adventures 🥰✊🏾 props to that camera woman!
I’ve been using this if not the exact tent, one almost identical, set up and all for about 5 years now. No reason to spend $1000+ on a RTT that you drive thousands of miles with it on and use it rarely. For mine I do have an air mattress but most of the time I just roll or and compress a 4” foam mattress topper. And if your camping I. The cold air mattresses will never warm up. That’s why I’ve gone over to the memory foam. Also ground tents are way easier with dogs.
The two biggest things RTT’s have over ground tents are A) if you’re in predator country it just gives you a bit more peace of mind having the higher ground (and fucking weirdos too) and B) it stays SO much cleaner in the tent. But for a family unless you have an overland trailer and you’re set up with two tents I see how this is much more convenient and comfortable, so it really just depends on your trip and your situation.

Check out tents from Gazelle. They assemble In 90 seconds. The material is 2 times better than ozark trail. I've had one for 5 years and never had an issue.
A tent is great for storage...want the best nights sleep hammock camping is the way to go...and that tent my friend has and the plastic joints break and it leaks after 3 uses
Consider a Space Trailer…..you can put a roof top tent on it too - all in $5000 for trailer and add your RTT. Much cheaper than what a lot of companies are charging.
Well yeah, tents are pretty good for camping. I’d hate to have to collapse a RTT just to drive to the trailhead of a day hike, go to a nearby beach, etc when camping at the same site for a few nights.
I Kiki your comment, “I’m starting to feel your age…lol, lol, lol. Try being 72 and say that…. Lol... bought one of these myself as I am pretty much over rtt... used it a few times already, put some cots in there and your golden... good dry weather tent, wouldn't recommend for winter...
Way too big and stuff to set up even tho ground tents have gotten way better but don’t need that giant tent for me and my girl. Rooftop tents on my 4runner is all we need and its a great peace of mind being higher up on top of a lifted 4runner from animals and other things on the ground.

We have a Kodiak Canvas 10x10 that's been fantastic.
Check out tents from Gazelle. They assemble In 90 seconds. The material is 2 times better than ozark trail. I've had one for 5 years and never had an issue.
I didn't know is was illegal to pick a flower in the U.S.
Ahh the freedom!
RTT are for influencers who go camping once or twice a year. But on Instagram they're overlanding every weekend.
A tent is great for storage...want the best nights sleep hammock camping is the way to go...and that tent my friend has and the plastic joints break and it leaks after 3 uses
Restoration Hardware is nice up there! Check out the one in Corte Madera next time!
Joshua tree is so dope especially the bouldering super cool rock slides
Consider a Space Trailer…..you can put a roof top tent on it too - all in $5000 for trailer and add your RTT. Much cheaper than what a lot of companies are charging.
Well yeah, tents are pretty good for camping. I’d hate to have to collapse a RTT just to drive to the trailhead of a day hike, go to a nearby beach, etc when camping at the same site for a few nights.
I live pretty close to joshua tree I should go there more often
I Kiki your comment, “I’m starting to feel your age…lol, lol, lol. Try being 72 and say that…. I”m in my early 70, and feel that I can do the same things a gal of 50 can do, but the mind says no, while the body says yes… and guess which wins out? The mind, but keep on producing those Videos, I love the ones that you first produced some years ago….
Where’s that moon fab awning link at? I need one
Wow, ground camping! What will they come up with next? What if you slept inside the truck? You wouldn’t even need the tent!!
I camp in North Carolina and I tent camp but I’m getting nervous about bears
Carry some bear mace and keep food sealed up tight.
I can see that erecting the tent in windy conditions would be a challenge.
Gazelle T8, check it bro.
I love Costco. It must be wierd filming in like the public people got to stare a little lol.
"I didn't listen, wrecked my body doing parkour and stuff"
Proceeds to immediately climb and jump over large boulders lol!
Couldn't have picked a better vehicle to do it in.
I'm older and as cool as roof top tents are for the price of a decent one I can build myself whole new camping gear set up
Very nice set up with the family. Nice job on the video. Aren’t you supposed to be in Green Bay for training camp. Just kidding. The truck is nice too.
Lol... bought one of these myself as I am pretty much over rtt... used it a few times already, put some cots in there and your golden... good dry weather tent, wouldn't recommend for winter...
What day is your birthday on?
Glad to see some normal camping videos for poors like me.
"Better than a hotel?"
*Entire family disagrees* 🤣
There might be Javelinas!
?? Right side steering ?????
Way too big and stuff to set up even tho ground tents have gotten way better but don’t need that giant tent for me and my girl. Rooftop tents on my 4runner is all we need and its a great peace of mind being higher up on top of a lifted 4runner from animals and other things on the ground.
Rhd tundra????
Video probably flipped to avoid any trademark issues
Max you collected air. REPORTED!
Shit 😅
Your bright idea is a tent? What's next, slicing bread?!
Hey Maxx it was a pleasure meeting you at the Northwest Overland Rally. My name is Dave and me and my buddy got a quick minute to chat with you. It’s these videos why I follow. Too easy to fly solo with all the other TH-camrs . You continue to bring the family and balance Maxx Powell with being everyday Joe and Dad to the kiddos. We dads live vicariously through you and the added struggles of living out your dream and bringing the fam into the picture has me hooked as we are all in the same boat. Keep up the great vids and wish you well on your family’s journey.
Dude that's so awesome. Thanks for this comment 👊 I'm glad we got to meet and that you enjoy the videos. It's a fun life and I'm lucky to share it with others.
those pop up 2 minute tents or the truck bed tents from amazon.. is what i usually use. forget spend thousands of dollars for the hyped roof top tents. I ain't trying to lose my foot step while trying to get down the ladder to just go pee late at night. lmfao..
Why do I feel nervous when you’re climbing up rocks Maxxident? 😂 Word of caution. Rattlesnakes and scorpions can be found in areas like this. Keep a close eye on the fam and yourself. As always; love the vid bud!!!
next time head out on old dale rd and enjoy
